The 9 at 9 Nine things you need to know this morning…

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you nine things you need to know with your morning cup of coffee.

1. #DEVASTATING: A family has been left with a bill of over half a million euro after the High Court awarded half the costs of a 10-year legal battle against them. Linda and Anthony Duffy from Cabinteely in Dublin had lost a case they had taken over alleged negligence by the National Maternity Hospital on the birth of their son Mark in 2002. The couple gave an emotional interview on RTÉ’s Six-One yesterday evening.

2. #DEATH: Gardai are probing the death of a 24-year-old man whose body was found in Waterford in the early hours of this morning.

3. #US 2012: The two contenders for vice-president in the White House, Joe Biden and Paul Ryan, had it out in their only televised debate last night. Who won? Check here - but also check here.

4. #MRSA: Twenty-three newborns in Mayo General Hospital in Castlebar have contracted MRSA , reports Caroline Crawford in the Irish Independent – health officials told TheJournal.ie that the babies are carrying the bacterium on their skin but have not fallen ill.

5. #CHILD PORN: It is taking gardai up to three years to process some child pornography cases, Cormac O’Keeffe reports in today’s Irish Examiner. Cutbacks to resources, especially to the Garda Computer Crime Investigations Unit, are being blamed.

6. #MISDIAGNOSIS: The HSE has issued an apology in the High Court to Olive Fahey, a woman whose breast cancer was misdiagnosed three times, reports the Independent and the Irish Times.

7. #VIDEO: A mobile phone video of two female secondary school students from Cork engaged in a physical fight is going viral on social media (with the Twitter hashtag #firstyearfight). Gardai are investigating the incident, they told TheJournal.ie this morning.

8. #BALI: The 202 victims of the 2002 Bali bombings are being remembered today on the 10th anniversary of the atrocity. The victims included Irishman Ed Waller who was based in Hong Kong and had been on a rugby trip to Bali with friends at the time of the attack.

9. #SMARTPHONE WARS: Samsung has today unveiled a compact version of its Galaxy S III smartphone – meant to rival the Apple iPhone5 – according to AFP. In more good news for them, the BBC says that a US court has ruled that its Galaxy Nexus can go on sale, lifting an injunction which existed since June in its ongoing patents battle with Apple.

I haven’t watched the ‘phone video of these young girls fighting because I find the very idea upsetting. Fighting amongst school kids is not a new phenomenon but for some people to be viewing this as entertainment is a sad reflection of the state of our society. The pressures on young people are enormous and as a mother, my heart goes out to these girls who will now have to deal with their immature actions being broadcast to the World.

I couldn’t agree more, it’s very upsetting to see young kids fighting, especially girls. The pressure they are under to settle disagreements using violence is very worrying. Teenagers start to carry knives and other weapons to protect themselves and we all know how that can end up. Last year, a group of Nigerian kids were beating the crap out of another Nigerian kid outside my house on their way home from school. It was so vicious and they were very young, 5th or 6th class in primary school. When I went out to stop it with another neighbour, the poor boy was sobbing, his lip and head were bleeding. I don’t think anything will ever change, kids will always fight but it really is shocking to see.

June, I watched the video and I can assure you it wasn’t for the entertainment value. The real value in watching this video is the realisation of how tough some kids can have it at school. Watch the video and tell me then how valuable it could be in bringing home how savage and brutal school life can be.

See how many other kids watch with glee as two young girls fight. Not one boy/young man intervenes.
These two girls could easily have been bullied into this fight. One thing that stands out is that there is no verbal interaction between the two girls which you may agree is unusual in any altercation.
This needs to be investigated not just by the police & teachers but by each parent that has a child attending that school and indeed any kid identified in the video…….so watch the video and thank your god that it’s not your child.

typical Ireland, a young couple face bankruptcy because have to pay half the legal cost of fighting a medical negligence case, yet the tax payer has to pay the costs of Charlie Haughey’s tribuneral hearing. this country’s legal system is so bent it can lick its own arse!

i saw a couple of kids picking on one much smaller kid outside a school in Clonmel, one lad who was a lot bigger in hight and build took a run up and was about to attack the smaller lad, me and my mate ray were just getting out of the van and going over to stop it when the lad who was being attacked suddenly delivered the most perfect right hook onto the big fellas chin, lifting him clean off his feet and dropping him over a small wall onto the riverbank below, the other attackers stood for a second then turned on their heels and ran. we asked the lad if he was o.k and if he needed a lift home, he said he was alright and that these lads had been picking on him for ages so his dad took him to boxing classes and he learnt how to defend himself . the bigger lad that he laid out was by this time walking along the riverbank with a bloody nose and lip and crying his eyes out.

It’s not only child porn cases but direct child abuse cases that are being held up by the cut-backs. A friend’s case was held up for an age while the abuser’s six computers were sitting in a queue and the two guards authorised to watch child porn trawled through dozens of other cases.

I accept your point Zebedee. It may very well be true that these girls have been bullied in some way and that bullying has led to this debacle. I have always been very vocal when it comes to bullying of any type as the repercussions can be life changing. We as adults need to stand up at every occurrence and be advocates for our young people. Parents AND Teachers have a responsibility to confront physical and emotional violence in the home and at school. It is NEVER acceptable for children to have to resort to violence. They need to know that there is at least one caring adult they can turn to whenever they are facing a crisis of any kind.
I never raised a hand to my children and I am proud to say they are now happy and very socially aware young adults. Although my son suffered a brutal, unprovoked attack four years ago while walking a friend home, he had the good sense to escape with his friend when they noticed some of the gang had broken bottles in their hands. It is imperative that juvenile angst be directed away from violence and EVERY child is worth the effort.

Andrea, I am glad for that young boy’s sake that you and others intervened. Not doing something in a situation like that is why these incidents are so common. I understand that most people fear injury themselves but when it comes to saving someone’s life, we must all have courage and do the right thing. Good for you.
