IT WAS A successful night for Irish production company Element Pictures as Poor Things picked up four Oscars at the 96th Academy Awards.
Emma Stone picked up the Best Actress award for her portrayal of Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthamos’ latest film, which was coproduced by Element Pictures along with Film4 and TSG Entertainment.
Reacting to the success on Twitter, the studio tweeted: “POOR THINGS has won a phenomenal 4 Academy Awards. We are absolutely thrilled! We couldn’t be prouder of our team, and the POOR THINGS cast, crew and creatives. Sending huge congratulations to all!”
While the film missed out at some of the bigger gongs including Best Picture and Best Director, it picked up three technical awards, including: Best Production Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, and Best Costume Design. A final tally of four awards made Poor Things the second-most decorated film of the evening, behind only Oppenheimer which picked up seven (including a Best Actor win for Cillian Murphy).
Irishman Robbie Ryan was nominated in the Best Cinematography category for his work on Poor Things but lost out to Oppenheimer’s cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema. It is Ryan’s second time to be nominated in the category, having also been nominated for The Favourite — Lanthamos’ previous film, also produced by Element Pictures.
Alongside Lanthamos and Stone, the film’s other two credited producers are Irish-American Ed Guiney and Irishman Andrew Lowe.
Guiney and Lowe are the co-CEOs and founders of Element Picture, and said it was an “absolute honour” and a “dream come true” to pick up four awards.
They described Poor Things as an “incredible project” and added that it was “particularly gratifying that the Academy has recognised the incredibly imaginative, ambitious, and iconic work of our talented team”.
Minister for Arts, Culture and Media Catherine Martin tweeted her congratulations to the production house shortly after the ceremony concluded, saying: “Brilliant to see #PoorThings pick up multiple Oscars tonight. I’m delighted for the Irish team @ElementPictures behind this outstanding film. Truly well deserved, comhghairdeas libh.”

Maybe the threat was made, but he is exaggerating it? To get protection, just after this budget and water charges coming in. They are getting worried, one spark and the whole thing could blow. Nuala the gardai were right they can’t do anything but she should be able to get a protection order and then a barring order – threats like that shouldn’t be ignored. The gardai would then be able to intervene immediately and arrest the man should he come near your friends’ home. She needs to contact a solicitor or free legal aid. Phil probably as you say did not have to jump through the same hoops.

I’ve never seen a Government as hated as this Fine Gael & Labour bunch. Minister Hogan’s disclosure of this “threat” through his authorised spokesman to the entire media is an abuse. If he complaint has been made to An Garda Siochana, let them deal with it. It is wrong to out this matter into the media and it is wrong and improper of the media to allow itself to be misused in this way.
Now An Garda Siochana will feel that they have to prosecute or refer to the DPP even if the threat was not literally intended.

Burch, I did not say if it was a literal threat or not but the spokesman says that the identity of the businessman who made the threat is known. It would be odd for an identified individual to pre announce such a threat if actually intent upon delivering on the threat.
Having reported the “threat” to An GardaSiochana, it was not just wrong, it was reprehensible to put a criminal investigation into the public domain in a one sided way. That is an interference.

When actions are taken by a Government they are not attributable in law to the Political Party or Parties that make up that Government.
In such circumstances therefor Fine Gael and Labour cannot be held financially culpable for decisions in which they erred as a Government.
On the other hand when you as an individual make comments on these pages that amount to an incitement to hatred you break the law in a manner for which you can and should be made personally responsible.

It is important to distinguish between serious threats, literally intended, and to be acted upon and inappropriate blowing off of steam and a sense of grievance.
It is disturbing that after a complaint is made to An Garda Siochana, the Ministter or his minions sees fit to publicise this to the media. This calls the sincerity of the complaint into question.
Minister, if you really do take this threat seriously, and it is well known that Minister Hogan is a man of extremely nervous disposition, then leave this matter to An Garda Siochana, who in view of your Ministerial position will give the investigation preferential treatment.
Serious threats rarely are made in writing revealing the identity of the issuer of the threat.
I’d like to know the state of mind of the person who made the threat, perhaps it’s someone who has lost everything due to the devastation these biggots have brought upon the people of Ireland now I’m not saying it’s ok to burn some ones home down but maybe this person should be approached with their mental state in mind……….

I would certainly expect the threats would not be acted on; however making the threats themselves is an offence.
Judging by what people say online, politicians in the current difficult environment should expect a bag full daily. But this boo hoo approach to politics, is less convincing than real leadership, by example and engagement with the issues in a sensitive way.

It is unfortunate that many of the comments here assume that the threat was serious and fully intended. I have not seen the “threat”, I don’t know what caused it, I don’t know how it was phrased, I don’t know if any any actual preparatory steps were taken and if this is a credible threat.
It seems that the matter is under investigation by An Garda Siochana and that investigation should proceed with presuming the outcome one way or the other.
I once had to make an unpopular decision. I did so with misgivings. I was threatened in a pub that my family would be attacked. I was initially angry and then I realised that the remark was made out of frustration. I was urged to report the threat to An Garda Siochana. I did not and the matter fizzled out. Impotence, anger, frustration cause people to say the wrong thing.
If Minister Hogan finds this too much for him, his resignation would resolve the matter.

Let me reassure you that the Government has put in place very extensive measures to quell civil disruption and to ensure the safety of Ministers and their families.
There were extensive and specially trained Garda teams place at various locations around the city on Budget day with special communications ready to quell civil disobedience .
In times like this, anger is to be expected. That anger is legitimate.
Most Irish people have a huge and unthinking respect for authority. No matter what social injustice is imposed, no matter how perversely unfair the measures imposed by Government are, no matter how much social destruction is wreaked on the people, there will only be a few half hearted demurs. The Irish people are biddable, accepting, passive and resigned.
At the same time that strong and unswerving pro authority outlook, the respect for power means that any intemperate remarks by those who few who are not indoctrinated into unthinking respect for power will trigger indignant cries from the mainstream.
