A soldier has been arrested following the seizure of drugs and cash at a military base

The incident happened in Collins Barracks, Cork and followed a search of the facility on Wednesday.

A SOLDIER HAS been arrested by gardai after Military Police investigation found drugs at an Irish army base. 

The incident happened in Collins Barracks, Cork and followed a search of the facility yesterday evening.

A Defence Forces spokesperson confirmed that the arrest had happened and that a military vehicle had formed part of the operation.

“During this operation, illegal substances and cash were discovered, leading to the arrest of a member of the Defence Forces who, as a result, is presently under investigation by AGS.

“Additionally, a DF vehicle was handed over to AGS for examination as part of this ongoing investigation.

“This is now a matter for AGS and the MPs will assist with the investigation,” the spokesperson said. 

Separately gardaí also confirmed that they were investigating and was detained under legislation that could see him held for a maximum of seven days.  

“Gardaí arrested a man in his 30s following the seizure of suspected drugs and cash near the Old Youghal Road in Cork on Wednesday evening.

“The man is currently detained at Cork Garda Station under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking Act) 1996,” a garda statement read.
