FOUR PEOPLE HAVE been treated for smoke inhalation following an arson attack in Omagh, Co Tyrone.
Shortly before 3.45am, police received a report that a fire had been started at a property in the Winters Grove area.
The Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service managed to extinguish the blaze, which is believed to have been started after flammable liquid was poured through the letterbox.
PSNI officers also attended the scene.
Four people were include the house at the time of the incident and were treated at the scene by colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service for smoke inhalation.
Extensive damage has been caused to the interior of the property as a result of the fire.
“This was an extremely reckless incident, and we are grateful to our colleagues in the Fire Service for tackling this fire, which could have had very serious consequences for those affected,” PSNI Detective Inspector Winters said.
“An investigation is underway, and I am appealing to anyone who may have any information which may assist us, including CCTV, dash-cam or mobile phone footage, to get in touch by calling 101, and quoting reference number 187 of 03/04/24,” Winters said.

@Seán Dillon: Or just put some thought into designing prison roofs so it’s not possible to stay up there. I.e., steep roofs, roof access only possible with scaffolding or cherry-pickers, no parapet to stop you sliding off, etc.
@Conall: yeah good idea, unfortunately most of these prisons are old and retain the old structures for imprisonment.

As a member of the EU we should lobby to be able to transfer Prisoners on disciplinary to other Prisons throughout the EU. So the likes of those convicts that assault staff, or as in this case endanger staff having to get them down, could be shipped off to a Romanian, Bulgarian or Baltic States Prison etc for a few months. A form of Shenigan treaty for Prisons. You could bet they would sing a different time when they returned.

@Darren Byrne: There are much easier Prisons to choose from in Scandinavia. But those States I mentioned know how to deal with their own disruptive convicts far more effectively than we do. The “Touchy Feely Bleeding Hearts” have very little input into their Prison Systems.
