It's a 13% increase on 2017 figures Shutterstock/theskaman306

EU study finds 40% of Irish people aged 25-34 and in employment still live with their parents

The number is lowest in Finland and Sweden at 2%, and highest in Croatia at 65%.

A NEW EU study has found that 40% of working people in Ireland aged between 25 and 34 still live with their parents.

The figures come from Eurofound, which is the EU Agency for the improvement of living and working conditions.

The report’s authors remarked that the figures show that “employment alone is not a sure-fire way to gain independence” given Europe’s housing crisis.

The latest available EU data on young people living with their parents comes from the 2022 European Union Statistics on Income and Living.

The 40% figure captured in 2022 is a stark increase on 2017 figures, when 27% of Irish people aged 25-34 and in employment were living with their parents.

Eurofound points to the doubling of rents since 2013 as one of the main drivers behind this 13% increase, the largest across the EU.

Other countries also reported increases between 2017 and 2022, but none so stark as in Ireland.

In Portugal, the proportion rose from 41% to 52%, and in Spain from 35% to 42%.

In France, it rose from 10% to 12%, while Italy recorded a rise from 41% to 48% and Croatia from 58% to 65%.

According to the 2022 data, Croatia has the highest number of 25 to 34-year-olds living with their parents, at 65%, followed by Greece at 52%, and Portugal on 52%.

living at home 2022 figures for proportion of working people between 25-34 living with their parents Eurofound Eurofound

However, the report’s authors noted “striking differences” between EU member states, particularly Nordic countries.

In Finland and Sweden, just 2% of working people aged 25-34 live with their parents, while this figure is 4% in Denmark.

The report’s authors also noted that it is more common for people in their 20s and 30s to live with their parents in southern Europe.

They say this is partly cultural but can also be attributed to the labour market precarity of temporary workers in southern Europe, where young people are more likely to be in temporary employment.

Meanwhile, the report found that young people living in Ireland were most likely to indicate that if circumstances were ideal, they would move.

young people leaving 2023 figures of young people across the EU planning to or who would like to move Eurofound Eurofound

A 2023 EU survey found that 35% of young Irish people are planning to leave within three years, while a further 26% would like to leave within three years.

@Vinny Clare: Honestly spot on. I bought my own place at 23 in 2010 and am now homeless (well was living on the streets for 6 years but my Mum took me in las year) I could write a book on how a single, childless woman is treated in in this Country. I’ve plenty of post-graduate qualifications too but shame on me for being able to advocate for the vulnerable people surviving in the hostels in this City (Dublin) I’m beyond done.

@ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere: Arwa Mahdawi in the Guardian yesterday: ‘The point is to make sure that this is all on record. Because decades into the future, when Israeli condos line the ethnically-cleansed beaches of Gaza and people look back on this genocide, there will be a lot of people who say they didn’t know. There will be people who will try and rewrite history to make it seem like the genocide unfolding right now was too complicated to parse. The point is to remind everyone too cowardly to speak up that your silence is complicity.’

Two of my children are still living at home. They want to have their own space but can’t afford to rent in or near Dublin, where they both work and save for a mortgage. They are both looking outside Dublin and further afield, just to have a home of their own. It is hard, as a parent, to see this and being unable to provide any comfort or viable assistance to get them on to the property ladder. We have a generation that will be damaged by the inability of govt to provide workable solutions to the housing issue.

I had to emigrate (thanks to freedom of movement aka “open borders”) even though I had finished university more than once, the wages were just too low to be able to afford the basic necessity that is a home. I emigrated, got triple the salary for the same job thanks to worker parties, and could buy a house. The corporate profits are at a capitalist high in Ireland but they don’t get passed on to the workers who produce those profits.

If they remain in power, they will ruin the country. It’s time to give someone else a chance; even if they are as bad as the current government, they deserve a chance. FF/FG has set the bar very low, so it is nearly impossible for any other coalition to sink it any lower.

Whereever the state sticks it’s big jammy thumb it makes things far worse. Housing is one of the most regulated areas in the economy. 1 person can hold up a building project that could house hundreds for years . If we want rents and house prices to fall, we need to build. Streamline the planning system in a way that favours building over nimbyism, encourage private sector investment, open up state land banks (the biggest land hoarder is the state btw), introduce a land value tax and a hefty vacant property tax, enforce the laws on short term lets, hold councils accountable for not building, cut taxes on construction projects, remove rent pressure zones and other disincentives to investment in the rental market.

@Tom D: We do need to build new social housing, the funding for which needs to come directly from central government to the projects and not from or through local authorities or county councils.

State lands should be utilised where feasible, rather than buying land from speculators that have bought up part or all of the land intended for the said lands in advance through insider knowledge

Absolutely not to land and vacant property taxes, these are not motivated by the alleged reasons of putting vacant properties back into use, if that was the case the thousands of vacant local authorities and council houses that are just in need of refurbishment wouldn’t be vacant, they are instead a cynical attempt to use unpaid taxes to steal peoples legally owned land and properties.

The current housing crisis must not be leverage to launch a Celtic Tiger 2.0 boom to only benefit developers and vulture funds at the expense of everyone else, while once again by design, failing to build the required level of social housing and inflating property prices even further.

Because given the opportunity, developers and builders will take all the available incentives, tax breaks etc and still only drip feed housing to market at the level that delivers the maximum return to them, which would mean perpetuating, rather than ending the housing crisis.

However, this in turn is completely warping the housing market.
I have been renting since I was 18 (about 20yrs ago now) I have been trying to save to buy my own place as having a mortgage provides more certainty than a landlord.
There are now single lads in their late mid/late 20’s buying decent houses because their generation are being Molly coddled.
Some kind of small tax needs to be brought in to make sure people with families(30s/40s) aren’t being squeezed out from the older and younger generations who have had advantages.
