OFFICERS FROM REVENUE’S Customs Service at Dublin Airport yesterday seized €40,000 when they stopped and searched two men from Northern Ireland.
The 29-year-old and 30-year-old men were stopped and searched as they were about to board a flight to Malaga yesterday morning. The discovery was made on foot of an intelligence-led operation.
The cash was concealed in the men’s carry on baggage.
The money was seized by Revenue and in Dublin Circuit Court yesterday afternoon officers were granted a three month detention order in both cases in order to carry out further investigations.

Thank god it was an intelligence led operation. If it was a stupidity-led one they could have gotten away with it.

You have to declare and get approval to carry more than 10k on board as far as I remember.

Think you need a licence of some form to buy or move a gold bar around , just seen a program on BBC the other night and a guy went into a pawn shop with his chain and got 6500 pounds for the gold weight

They have 3 months to appeal in court to get it back if they can prove the obtained it legally, if not it goes to the Revenue

The money was probably for something illegal. Also it is illegal to carry more than €10000 on the plane. Is there a legal way to carry lots of cash – cheques don’t count as they are traced and reported.

Temporarily convert your cash into a diamond necklace. Don’t think there’s any problem in travelling whilst wearing ultra expensive jewellery.
It’s perfectly legal to bring more than €10k on a plane and legal to carry as much as you want where ever you want. But if you cross a border, you have to declare it and you can be asked to prove that it’s yours, that it’s legitimate and that tax was paid on it. More likely it was from something illegal, not for something illegal. Tucked away behind the plasterboard in a nice Spanish villa waiting for the owners retirement!

Did I read correctly that these two men received 3 months without a trial? Great to see that natural justice is alive and well.
