Mozilla CEO says Google is a "frenemy"

Gary Kovacs says that while Mozilla, which created Firefox, gets most of its revenue from Google, the two companies are still eyeing each other carefully.

THE CEO OF Mozilla, which runs not-for-profit internet browser Firefox, has said that his company and Google are ‘frenemies’.

Gary Kovacs confirmed that a major part of Mozilla’s revenue comes from a deal with Google, whose browser is Chrome. Google pays to have ‘Google search’ the default search engine in the Firefox search bar. Kovacs wouldn’t specify how much the deal was worth but didn’t protest when the figure of $300m a year was put to him at the Dublin Web Summit yesterday.

He said that every time Google achieves a financial transaction through a referral from Firefox, Mozilla gets a commission. Google, however, along with Internet Explorer, are the major rival to Firefox in the browser business. Kovacs conceded:

We are in a frenemy situation with Google.

He denied that it was dangerous to rely on an economic model where their rival was supplying much of their income.

“It would be dangerous if there wasn’t a value in what we are doing,” he said.

The Mozilla Manifesto declares that it aims to promote “openness, innovation and opportunity” to make the internet a community project working for the public good.

Kovacs said that the organisation was now investing in new projects that reflect people’s use of the internet moving from desktop devices to mobile. “The web is under threat,” he says as certain companies begin to lock down the operating systems (OS) people use on their phones.

We are being asked where we want to live our online lives.

Mozilla is launching its own OS, first in South America and some Eastern European countries, with a view to keeping the web “unlocked” on mobile phones. It will be launched first in Brazil in the first half of next year but won’t be in Western Europe for some time. Mozilla is also partnering with some hardware companies and says that their aim is to continue to promote a “pure HTML environment so anyone can participate”.

HTML, said Kovacs, is the open-source “language of the web” and he feels that Mozilla’s push for HTML5 compliance has forced the hand of their competitors. He also said he didn’t believe that either Chrome or Firefox was “winning” the competition in browser choice but that they were neck-and-neck.

“Chrome doesn’t have to lose for us to win, as long as we retain share enough of the market to continue to have influence,” he said.

Kovacs also revealed that Mozilla will build a social brower – “we see integration with what we call the social API” – and claimed they will be “leading the way with another big company”, launching in beta form in the next two days.

This has been about Kenny’s political ego, nothing more.

Removing another €3.8 Billion from the economy will destroy jobs not create them. There is no shortage of willing entrepreneurs, capital or workers. What is missing is consumer demand & this budget will reduce that further.

For all that Mr Kenny – and in fairness all the others – has acheived in ‘negotiations’ with the Euro authorities we might just as well have sent a robot programmed with just one response – “Yes Master, how high?”

Disregarding the consequential, additional effects of recession we are being told we must repay €95 Billion solely due to the collective failure of European banking within a deeply flawed currency union design.

We are told we must also accept the lack of job opportunity for 1 in 7 of our workforce, likely for a decade if not longer. Essentially dumping at least 25% of our fellow citizens into no wage or low wage poverty in perpetuity.

    Absolutely disgusting.

Willing entrepreneurs are in short supply. When the demand is not there and massive imbalances have yet to clear, no entrepreneur is too willing. We’re definitely short of capital, no doubt. Workers we have plenty but too many of them are ex builders, I am afraid not of much use for a while. And the demand is always there but when incomes are falling then the consumers won’t spend. The trick is to clear imbalances so the investment in productive capacity can resume and then when incomes start rising the demand will again materialize in form of spending.

Are you for real??? Were Fine Gael and Labour not the largest opposition parties in the state between 1997 and 2010?? Yes they were and it was up to them to challenge the government of the day on decisions that would impact on the people. They did not do this, instead they sat back and let the good times keep rolling without even considering the possibility that maybe it couldn’t last. And as for your assertion that they didn’t bankrupt the country, wise up, they are insisting on paying the debts of a criminal and dead bank (Anglo), that they have no obligation to pay by the way, and as a direct result are further crippling the country with unsustainable debt!!! 3.1 Billion is being paid out to unsecured bond holders of Anglo next year and that is a fact. By doing this the Irish people will be no better off in any way!

I left this on Enda’s FB page. Taking bets how long it will stay there. :D

“I was hoping for something much more radical and inspiring for the 6th ever national address of An Taoiseach. I’ll give you a couple of examples: “Ireland is leaving the flawed Euro project which did untold damage to our productivity and asset inflation and reintroducing Punt so we can follow Icelandic model of recovery post banking crisis”. Or “To help balance our budget An Taoiseach is taking 50% pay cut, the government ministers are taking 40% pay cut, TDs 30% pay cut, civil service 10% to 40% pay cut depending on how much they earn”. Or, “the temperature has been flat for the last 15 years so global warming is cancelled along with the carbon tax”. I mean, the only thing you Sir told us tonight that we did not know already is that Bertie Ahern’s mobile phone will no longer be paid by struggling taxpayers.”

Ireland needs a revolution now, not for to oust thegovernment, we have no government. We slavishly followed the policies of Margaret Thatcher in her Big Bang experiment,,that brought banking to a new and exciting level that saw banks buy up stockbroking companies, invented new financial products, and rewarded risk taking at an absolute reck;ess level. greed is good, greed is great, greed is the way forward,,In the words of Cochise the great Indian Nations leader in america, there will always be enough for everyone’s need, but their will never enough for everyone’s greed. Let Ireland go it alone once again, we will have enough for our needs, the greedy bastards can go to germany, france , uk, or china. WE WILL SURVIVE BUT WE MUST FIGhT.

As well as the kitchen appliances mentioned above.. None of us would think of these items as luxury, but they are classed as such in terms of VAT.

Don’t be fooled by the word “luxury” it is a poor description of the products this tax is applied to.

The iPhone app need loads of improvements, it’s not user friendly at all. it’s frustrating and time consuming trying to find old conversations that you want to reply to. Sometimes you just can’t because of this problem of not showing all the comments. I emailed Garvan about a way to fix this but he never got back to me.

O Jezzus we’re in an awful state. It’s someone else’s fault of course but I need ye all to feel the pain instead. You’ll be good girls and boys now and dig deep won’t ye. I’m hoping that some of me bulls*** tonight will appeal to enough self righteous egits who normally accept it in a lying down position. Where would we be without the good ol subservant gobeens of Ireland. You see there’s no room for any intellectual argument or disobedience at this stage. We have to evacuate any idea of justice and accountability. The lifeboats have been deployed and It’s bankers and bondholders first. The women and children will have to swim for it because I really don’t give a sh**e.
Thank you and goodnight and may God bless Germany.
