The metal barrier what was mistakenly erected at Blackrock Diving Tower Cllr Clodagh Higgins on X

‘Normal service resumes’ after barriers mistakenly erected at Galway diving tower are removed

A spokesperson said barriers were mistakenly erected around all diving points on the middle platform of the Blackrock Diving Tower.

GALWAY CITY COUNCIL has said a mistake by a contractor resulted in the middle platform of the Blackrock Diving Tower being closed off to users.

The Blackrock Diving Tower on the Salthill Promenade is a popular attraction among locals and tourists alike, but it was noted that metal barriers had been erected around the middle platform of the tower.

But in a post on social media platform X this morning, local Fine Gael councillor Clodagh Higgins said that “normal service resumes” after Galway City Council rectified an “error” that had been made by a contractor.

In a statement to The Journal, a spokesperson for Galway City Council said that a contractor was due to close off two access points on the middle platform of the tower.

The plan was to close off two jumping points that are directly below the jumping points on the top platform.

Galway City Council said this has been done on safety grounds and added: “There were issues with people jumping off the middle and top platforms at these locations at the same time, putting themselves at risk of landing on top of each other.”

However, the spokesperson said the contractor “mistakenly closed off all points on the middle platform”.

The spokesperson added that once Galway Coty Council was made aware of this, it organised the removal of two of the barriers that were put in in incorrectly.

An error? That’s an unusual error where a council does work they don’t have to do rather than not doing work they are meant to do.

so this wasnt contracted out to someone who came out, measured, cut and installed this…..how exactly was that an accident. The only accident here is the council accidentially got toasted on social media and rather than admit like a normal mob they messed up, they reversed back and used the old dog ate my homework excuse……id love to know how much this “mistake” cost, not that accountability is important in Irish politics when the taxpayers foot the bill sure

@Tom Newell: The contractor would only complete work that he was paid for. It seems strange if it was surveyed and approved and a PO issued for unnecessary work.
Either no cost control or someone is spoofing.

Surprised anyrhing good like this is left open in the country with the amount of litigious gobdows around. I suppose those wasters would find it hard to get out there in the first place.
