JOURNAL MEDIA HAS won two top prizes at this year’s Justice Media Awards, the longest-running media awards in the country, which recognise excellence in Irish legal journalism.
Eoghan Dalton, Sinéad O’Carroll and Daragh Brophy won the award Human Rights/Social Justice Reporting (print/online) category.
They covered the Bill Kenneally inquiry, which looked at the garda investigation into the former sports coach found guilty of indecently assaulting a number of boys.
Sinéad O’Carroll is Editor of The Journal and Daragh Brophy is News Editor.
Muiris O’Cearbhaill won Best Newcomer for highlighting key issues facing public services and other stories in the public interest.
Journal Media was also awarded four merits.
Órla Ryan received a merit in the Human Rights/Social Justice Reporting (print/online) category for her coverage of the landmark Supreme Court ruling on pension rights, while Lauren Boland received a merit for her work on Ireland’s late submission of long-term climate strategy and the EU’s infringement proceedings in response.
Stephen McDermott won two merits, one in International Justice Reporting for his piece examining what a war crime is and if international law is being broken in Israel and Gaza, and another in the general Print/Online Journalism (daily) category for fact-checks debunking false claims about the Family and Care referendums.

Well done to the journalists on their awards. It is a pity that they didn’t have any comments on the shameful conduct that took place at the Limerick Circuit Criminal Court today: “Commandant Paul Togher, gave evidence that Crotty was an “exemplary”, “courteous”, “professional” and “disciplined” officer”. The young female victim was savagely beaten to an inch of her life. Shame on Judge Tom O’Donnell for letting the perpetrator off with a suspended sentence. How can these weaklings of men sleep tonight?
@Earth Traveller: He’s going to be court martialed now that the civilian case is finished.
@Alan Kennedy: Yes, but that still does not excuse the conduct of the judge and his commanding officer. Both were disgraceful.
