SPAIN QUALIFIED FOR the last 16 of Euro 2024 with a match to spare after beating Italy 1-0 in a dominant display which ensured that La Roja would go through as Group B winners.
Riccardo Calafiori’s own goal nine minutes after half-time was the difference between the two sides at Gelsenkirchen.
But the slender margin of victory didn’t reflect a statement performance from Spain who completely nullified Italy and should have had the game won by half-time, as they did in their opening round thumping of Croatia.

Nico Williams was the star for Spain as he ran Napoli right-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo ragged and supplied the cross from which the unfortunate Calafiori poked the winning goal into his own net.
Luis de la Fuente’s team have a perfect six points at the top of the group and take on Albania on Monday knowing that they are already in the knockout rounds and playing like potential champions.
For Italy Thursday’s deserved defeat was a reality check as vibrant Spain peppered the brilliant Gianliugi Donnarumma’s goal throughout the match while the Azzurri failed to have a single attempt on target.
It was a performance reminiscent of the Euro 2012 final between the two teams when Spain crushed Italy 4-0 in the last international hurrah for tiki-taka football.
However all is not lost for Luciano Spalletti’s team, who are second on three points, as a draw with Croatia on Monday will be enough to guarantee qualification behind Spain.
Spain could have been ahead twice in the first 10 minutes but squandered two great headed chances.
Less than two minutes were on the clock when an unmarked Pedri nodded Williams’ pinpoint cross straight at Donnarumma.
And then Williams, who had a field day against Di Lorenzo, was the guilty party by somehow heading wide Alvaro Morata’s superbly delivered, inswinging ball from the left flank.
Spain were clearly on top as Italy struggled to get out of their half, Gianluca Scamacca toiling on his own up front with little support and wasting possession when it did come his way.
Donnarumma had to be at his best twice within a matter of seconds when he first stuck out a foot to deny Morata and then pulled off a superb fingertip save which kept out Fabian Ruiz’s powerful drive from distance.
Meanwhile at the other end of the pitch Spain goalkeeper Unai Simon was a virtual spectator as Italy’s sole shot in the first half came just before the break when Federico Chiesa blazed a poor effort over from a difficult position.
The same pattern of Spanish possession and Italian defending continued after half-time and Pedri again wasted a great chance in the 51st minute, slamming wide after Marc Cucurella pulled back a perfect low cross.
But Spain got the breakthrough soon after and it came through more sensational play from Williams on the left, who made mincemeat of Di Lorenzo before fizzing across a ball which Calafiori couldn’t help but divert into his own goal.
La Roja went close to doubling their lead with two distance strikes from Morata and teen sensation Lamine Yamal, before the superb Williams smashed an effort past Donnarumma which came crashing out off the crossbar in the 71st minute.
Italy pushed forward in hope of an equaliser after Mattia Zaccagni and Mateo Retegui replaced the ineffective Chiesa and Scamacca.
But in the dying moments Donnarumma again made two superb saves to twice stop Ayoze Perez making the scoreline better reflect a one-sided contest.

Just a thought as the Wests foreign policies create meltdowns in other countries and they always do. So the immigrates are a symptom of governments interfering in other countries and normally from stroking sectarian hatreds. The problem with open border policies is that it allows anyone in including criminals to those wanting to create spiritual warfare to those who do not want to integrate themselves into a new society. The thing about cultures is that the mindsets can be totally different especially when it comes to what is right or wrong sometimes?
So we need these self appointed militant guardians do we ? They get to do all the deciding on what and who is facist ? So they don’t believe in the law of the land and letting the proper authorities deal with any and lssues?, They don’t trust the population to make up their own minds and have taken it upon themselves ? @Catherine Sims: Therein lies the problem. Most Irish politics hovers around the center and has done for a long time with a small issue-driven cohort occupying the left. In the US, FG would actually be considered in the same ideological ballpark as the Democrats. We don’t do political extremism and that’s a good thing.
The problem with a lot of these activist groups is that in the absence of any actual fascists to attack they are happpy to make do with anyone mildly centrist, conservative or who simply disagrees with them. Views that are quite mainstream are now getting regularly labeled as “fascist” which is in serious danger of becoming a byword for (ironically enough) “anyone who disagrees with my socialist views and/or 2010s gender politics”.
If they do manage to find some actual fascists my suggestion is both parties decamp to somewhere out of town where they can have at each other as long as they like without bothering people in town for their Saturday shopping.

I remember some lad started a party called Identity Ireland a few years ago. Plenty of coverage about how evil he was and how his non-event of a party was a real danger to Irish democracy. Now I disagree with him, but frankly all he did was say some stuff. That’s it.
There was next to no coverage however, about how he was beat s—less on public transport and threatened with a knife by Antifa. That is a far bigger threat to democracy in my opinion.
These Antifa thugs have gotten a hold in many parts of Europe. They break into people’s homes and destroy them over tweets. They launch armed group surprise attacks on people, usually lone targets, and justify it by claiming everyone they oppose is a Nazi, when plenty of their victims are cookie cutter conservatives, usually Christian Democrats. The worst part is that there is next to no coverage of them, presumably because of a tacit approval from mainstream journalists that they’re beating up the ‘right sort of people’.
They are extremists. They are violent. If you are on the left, they are not your friends.

In Febuary 2016 there was a planned Pegida demo in Dublin, some groups + political parties organised a counter demo,, suspected Pegida supporters were attacked & chased in the street & the some of the people who were due to speak at that Pegida demo were attacked by a mob on public transport, what I found telling was none of the political parties ( AAA ) ( PBP ) or ( SF ) publicly condemned the unprovoked violence nor publicly distanced themselves from it.
March 2015 a new party ( Identity Ireland ) held their first ever public meeting to explain their policies to the public, if you look some videos on youtube of the meeting
you can see it being crashed & disrupted by left wing thugs .
In 2004 Justin Barrett was to speak at a debate on Immigration in Ucd only to be attacked by self appointed thugs .
In 1998 a new party at that time ( Immigration Control Platform ) booked their first public meeting in Ennis/Clare which was targeted & disrupted by left wing thugs . now just imagine for a sec if a right wing group went around attacking people in the streets, assaulting speakers at political debates & disrupting public meetings, chances are there would of been calls to ban + proscribe such a group ages ago .
