Discount retailer to create 300 Irish jobs

The discount retailer celebrated its first anniversary of trading in Ireland with the announcement it will open ten new Irish stores in 2013.

DISCOUNT RETAILER DEALZ has announced it is opening ten new Irish stores creating some 300 jobs in the new financial year (April 2013).

The announcement comes on the first anniversary of the company trading in Ireland and Dealz said the new store will allow for an investment of almost €3 million into the Irish economy.

Since launching in Ireland in September 2011, Dealz has opened twenty stores and invested over €6 million into the Irish economy with the creation of almost 600 jobs.

By the end of this financial year the discount retailer will open additional stores including Dun Laoghaire and Clonmel.

Commenting on the announcemnt today CEO of the company Jim McCarthy said he was thrilled to announce store expansion plans.

“Given that employment figures are so low in Ireland we are delighted that we can offer even more people a job as each new store creates job opportunities across Ireland,” he said.

Earlier this week, Dealz also celebrated the opening of their twentieth store located in Midleton, Co Cork, creating 30 jobs for the Cork area.

There can be up to a 30% difference on the amount of money staying in a economy between shopping local and a multinational. Prices can be higher but long term a society benefits more. Although in these times a lot of people have to use the cheaper option.

Where does the figure of 30% come from out of interest Derek? Would be useful to know what is actually based on.

When u shop local, taxes are paid, money is recirculated back into the local economy. Shop in a multinational, taxes are shit, employees paid buttons and the profits are siphoned off to some tax free haven. Prime example been Starbucks only paying 37,000 taxes in Ireland over the last seven years. Most of us pay that in a couple of years. Game is rigged.

300 jobs are created and all you can do is complain? Seriously?

And on your other point, People don’t have much money left these days so they try and get more for their money where ever they can get it. So most people won’t care if the company is local, British, Germany, African or from any other country.

If i can get something cheaper that will last longer, i will get it anywhere i can. When i have more money, i will spend it in a local store.

@DMC, while you could maybe find a few odds and ends in these stores, there is no way they would be in competition with even local shops, so I don’t think they are any threat to anybody’s job.
there is one in my local town and I seldom bother to go to it , and even then it would be just out of curiosity.

Whilst these jobs are good news it means one thing.

People are turning away from normal retailers and looking for bargains, this will lead to huge job losses and tax revenue for the Irish economy.

Its similar to when people shopped in the North a few years back, people cant afford to live in this tip and will shop where they can get the best value for money.

    Signs of the times.

Not when the same item is £1 in the UK. Should only be €1.25 here but unfortunately we Irish will get ripped of by big UK retailers by charging an extortionate exchange rate.
