Galway knock All-Ireland champions Dublin out, Armagh reach first semi-final since 2005

There were two All-Ireland senior football quarter-finals down for decision at Croke Park today.

The 42 is the home of quality journalism for passionate Irish sports fans, bringing you closer to the stories that matter through insightful analysis and sharp sportswriting.

Galway 0-17

Dublin 0-16

GALWAY STAGED A brilliant second-half comeback to knock champions Dublin out at the All-Ireland football quarter-final stage in Croke Park.

It is the first time since 2009 that Dublin exit before the semi-finals.

They were in front 0-11 to 0-7 at half-time, but Galway pegged them back during the second half with Shane Walsh and Cillian McDaid their scoring stars.

Armagh 2-12

Roscommon 0-12

Armagh have advanced to their first All-Ireland senior football semi-final since 2005 after overcoming 14-man Roscommon at a rainy Croke Park.

Goals in either half from Conor Turbitt and Barry McCambridge saw Kieran McGeeney’s side progress after no shortage of heartbreak at this stage.

For Roscommon, meanwhile, the 33-year wait for a semi-final continues. Davy Burke’s men were below par, while Ruaidhri Falllon’s first-half red card was a hammer blow.

“Kelly said it is “wrong that a 90-year-old woman who goes into an emergency department, such as the Mater, could be on a trolley for two to three days and 100 yards down the road an executive can go into another emergency department and be treated immediately”.

Kelly is fully aware that this has been government policy for many decades including the government he was member of very recently. The public health system doesn’t work properly because it’s not meant to. If it did, then there would be little opportunity for private capital to profit from human illness.

Spare us your drivel Dowling and Gavin. The former minister for Health has admitted that privatization is the agenda behind the dysfunctional public health system.

Gene Kerrigan sums it up below:

“Here is my favourite-ever quote from a politician. It’s from Brendan Howlin, the current Minister for Thrashing the Social Infrastructure.
No, it’s not the quote from 2011, just before the election, when he asked for our votes and told us: “We are against water charges.”
No, it’s from an interview Brendan gave about a decade after he was Minister for Health. Being a thoughtful man, he had spent some time reflecting on his experience in coalition. He wondered why he and others had failed to deliver “a first-class public health system”.
He had since realised, he told author Maev-Ann Wren:”If we did that, there would be no reason for sustaining a private system.”
And the right-wing want a thriving private health market. They want, according to Brendan, around 30pc of people to pay for private health products.
However, he said: “In order for that to happen, they really required the public [health] system to be inferior. Why else, if it was first-rate, would people pay for a private system?”
That’s the sound of a penny dropping.”

That’s the way they made it! No one should be on a trolley regardless of age or illness.

That’s why we still keep paying the likes of VHI. It cripples us but having only used it once in 10 years I could see the benefit of going to the Galway clinic instead of UHL. I was seen and admitted in two hours, diagnosed the next morning after tests. Paid 70, – 50 for the GP, and 20 for the consultant at a&e. The a&e fee was wavered cause I was admitted. Healthcare looked after the rest.

In UHL I was sent in via the GP a 8 hour wait and they said we are too busy to admit me follow up with the GP to send me in as an outpatient, it could be this or it could be this. Another wait. When you are doubled over in pain, that’s the last thing you want to hear. Paid 50 euro to my GP. Further test of 150 and got no answer. It came back clear, meaning it was probably the other thing.

Test at Galway clinic proved it was the other thing!

@ Billy how about your spare us from your copy and paste nonsense for a couple if days.. @Lily I was at a Dublin hospital on last Wednesday. We went in from the rear carpark door to a reception tried to check in receptionist there said we need to the front reception. Walked to the front reception and was told by the receptionist there we need to go to administration. So that’s 2 receptionist that couldn’t do anything for a patient. We found administration and was checked in by another receptionist. She told us then to go the day ward and low and behold another receptionist was there to check us into the actually ward. We seen 4 receptionists in 2 did nothing for us, one checked us into the hospital and the last one checked us into the day ward. How about we get rid rid of 3 receptionists and hire 3 nurses? Oh Yea unions won’t let that happen.

Trisha private patients contribute an awful lot towards public hospitals which is then used to treat public patients. Plus while I struggle to pay my private health cover my taxes already contribute too. I think if consultants waived their fees after ops it might encourage people to use their healthcare more. It’s enough to pay health cover and taxes only to be ripped off again with consultant fees.

ICU Bed crisis is costing over 300 lives a year! One such life lost was my 19 year old sister due to the wreak of a health system! HSE was seeking an additional €15.5 Million for the ICU bed situation, for this year and was declined. That decision has cost my family a member.

Health budget in 2008 was €15.4 billion. Trying to figure out how Paschal Donohoe thinks an increase of €497 means it’s now Irelands highest ever spending on health in history of State of €14.6 Billion, when Government spent €15.4 billion in 2008!

Health system needs a plan and proper funding. Two tier system clearly not working. Seems to be a lack of ambition and vision for Heath in this government.

University Hospital Kerry in dire need of support. A&E overrun all this year! Almost out of trolleys. Had no bed available in February and March this year for my family member RIP. Leadership needed!

Private hospitals should be nationalised. The State has greatly subsidised the construction of these private hospitals, in many cases on public lands, it also subsidises private health insurance and covers the cost of a public patients in these private hospitals! Private for profit medicine is a cancer feeding off the public system. It is also repugnant to the ideals of a Republic.
