National Youth Council of Ireland

First major opinion poll shows 'Yes' leading the way in referendum

A RedC poll commissioned by the National Youth Council of Ireland shows almost universal Yes support.

THE FIRST MAJOR opinion poll on the forthcoming children’s rights referendum shows a large chunk of the Irish population preparing to vote Yes in the forthcoming referendum.

The RedC poll, commissioned by the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI), showed 74 per cent of respondents saying they would vote Yes, with just 4 per cent – or one in every 25 people asked – saying they would vote No.

Perhaps significantly, however, 22 per cent of voters said they were yet to decide on how they would vote in the referendum, which proposes to insert a new article on children’s rights into the constitution.

The poll showed that support for the Yes side was highest among those with dependants under the age of 16, the over-55s, and voters living in Munster.

NYCI deputy director James Doorley welcomed the strong support for the Yes side, but warned that there was “no room for complacency as we have seen big changes in public support for constitutional amendments before”.

This was given further weight by findings that over 60 per cent of voters describing themselves as being not knowledgeable – to some degree – about the nature of the vote. 22 per cent of respondents said they were ‘not at all’ knowledgeable, while 39 per cent said they were ‘not very knowledgeable’.

14 per cent professed to be extremely knowledgeable, while 19 per cent said they were ‘quite’ knowledgeable about the prospects being put to them.

The poll, conducted between Monday and Wednesday of this week, took responses from 931 Irish citizens and has a margin of error of 3 per cent.

I now live in UK and this brings it home to what I am missing. I wish I didn’t have to leave, reasons out of my control as a result of a mis managed corrupt system. The day will hopefully come when it will be fixed and I can come home.

There are some beautiful places here in Ireland. We have some fabulous clean uncrowded beaches. From being abroad and working with people who travelled Ireland I was a bit surprised in realising how little of Ireland I had seen compared to them. They had travelled the whole country and done all the sites. I’m now trying to tick all these places off my list and visit as many parts of the country as I can over the next while. I don’t think Ireland is promoted enough nor do we learn enough about our country in school. Most of us are clueless about the flora and fauna around us. I’d love to see nature studies come back into the school system with a big part of it being walks and tours around various places.

The forgotten Ireland as usual. I’m not saying that the pics here aren’t beautiful as they are and these places are amazing but there’s barely any of the forgotten areas living above that horrible invisible Galway to Dublin line. A bit of balance would be nice. Some amazing spots in Donegal, Sligo and Mayo. Especially along the new Greenway cycle route from Westport to Achill with some absolutely stunning views of clew bay!

Pity Google Earth (Ireland) can’t look down on us with such superb definition. Try zooming in on some of our most famous sites and you’ll be met with fuzz. Not to mention some of their shots of clouds and shadows. You would think that having set up their European headquarters here (with the aid of a massive tax break from our government) that they would do a decent scan of our emerald jewels.
