Gardaí urge public to be careful with online investments after one man defrauded of €250,000

“If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is,” one Garda seargeant said.

GARDAÍ ARE URGING the public to be aware of investment fraud scams as incidents of the crime are on the rise.

Sgt John Horgan of Mallow Garda Station told C103′s Cork Today Show that between January 2020 and this month, “over €75 million was reported stolen in Ireland through investment fraud”.

Investment fraud occurs when people pose as investment managers online in order to get people to transfer money. After some time, contact with the fraudster ceases and the victims are left with sometimes life-changing financial losses.

Horgan described the sums of money being stolen through investment fraud as “staggering”.

In one case, a man was defrauded of more than €250,000 after he came across what appeared to be a trading broker online. At one point early on in the fraud, he presumed the company he was investing in was legitimate because he was able to withdraw €5000, so he kept committing more money.

“If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is,” said Sgt Horgan, who urged people to “think long and hard about investments” and to seek a second opinion.

@Basildon Joe: I also got scammed through the Dublin portal. A gorgeous woman from Vilnius held up a QR code, so naturally I scanned it. Brought me to a telegram chat with her and I bought her an airline ticket. Waited for her at Dublin airport she wasn’t there. Brendan O’Brien was there though, I know it was him because it was lashing raining out and he was wearing wellies, shorts and suncream holding an oversized rainbow coloured umbrella.

Am I racist? Got few times scam calls, said from revolt and amazon customer service and said I purchased amount of money… then I said yes, purchased curry powder for beef curry, then the scammer shouted I am racist and insulting me. Another time I said purchased a cow less €100 from India for beef curry … I was branded as a racist, so am I racist? Ps: their customer service is really rude and unprofessional

I don’t like investment scams where they just lash into your old base self interest. Ponzi schemes or these 5000% return things.
I prefer the ones where they finesse it a bit, tell you a story about being princes or deposed presidents, needing one last injection of cash to cure all known diseases. At least then I… (I mean the mark) …can go away saying “I did it for altruistic reasons” and not feel as bad about myself, plus I got to be part of a whirlwind adventure.
