Dublin's traffic lights to get new tweaks reminding drivers to give priority to cyclists

Dublin City Council said it will help result “in a safer, more pleasant experience for all road users” in the capital.

LAST UPDATE | 9 Sep 2024

DUBLIN CITY COUNCIL is rolling out new tweaks to the capital’s traffic lights aiming to deliver a message to drivers regarding when to give cyclists priority.

Traffic lights in the city will now have flashing amber arrows to remind left-turning vehicles they must allow cyclists to take a turn first.

The council’s aim is for motorists to remember that cyclists “have priority over turning vehicles when travelling straight through any junction” in Dublin.

Making the announcement on social media today, the local authority said it will help result “in a safer, more pleasant experience for all road users”.

The lights remind drivers that before making a turn, they must yield to approaching cyclists, allowing them time to clear the junction.

After the cyclist has cleared the junction, the driver is then able to make their turn.

The chairperson of the Dublin Cycling Campaign Úna Morrison said the group welcomed this initiative from DCC which she added “should aid to remind motorists of existing priority rules” at junctions.

“Anything that makes travelling by cycle safer for cyclists is welcome. However, the onus remains on motorists to respect and comply with these rules,” Morrison told The Journal this evening.

Jesus, 2 posh house for sale abroad articles in one day in the Journal. I know it’s a Sunday and the ‘journalists’ need to fill space but come on, who gives a sh*te? It would be a lot more interesting if the article was ’1 room tin shack for sale in Manila slum for $1000′
