Kamala Harris and Donald Trump shaking hands at the 9/11 memorial in New York today

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump attend 9/11 memorial, and shake hands, after fierce debate

The pair briefly put politics to one side, hours after they clashed in a combative presidential debate.

KAMALA HARRIS AND Donald Trump shook hands today at New York’s 9/11 memorial to mark the anniversary of the attacks, briefly putting politics aside hours after they clashed in a fiery presidential debate.

The solemn display of unity was a stark contrast to the scenes from the previous evening, when the Democratic vice president forced the rattled Republican former president onto the defensive in a bruising encounter in front of tens of millions of viewers.

Any sense of harmony from the commemoration of the 2001 Al-Qaeda attacks is likely to be short-lived, with the election still on a knife-edge with just two months to go, despite polls showing a crushing debate win for Harris.

The 78-year-old Trump came out swinging even before the ceremony, claiming in an interview with Fox News – without evidence – that the ABC News debate in Philadelphia was “rigged” against him.

“It was a rigged deal, as I assumed it would be, because when you looked at the fact that they were correcting everything and not correcting with her,” he complained, referring to pushback from the moderators to some of his more brazenly false statements.

Trump later appeared to reject the Harris campaign’s call for a second debate, comparing the 59-year-old Harris to a beaten boxer demanding another chance and saying on social media: “Why would I do a Rematch?”

‘Stand in solidarity’

The rivals kept their animosity hidden at the Ground Zero memorial however, in an extraordinary encounter that also included President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race in July.

Biden, 81, looked on as Harris and Trump shared their second handshake in the space of a few hours – having also done so at the start of the debate in an unexpected move prompted by Harris.

It also marked just the second time Trump and Harris have ever met in person, with their first encounter coming at the debate in Pennsylvania.

Trump passed up an earlier opportunity when he refused to attend Biden’s 2021 inauguration, due to his false claims that he had won the 2020 election.

Former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg appeared to initiate the greeting in New York, touching Harris on the arm to get her attention before she and Trump shook and exchanged a few words.

Wearing commemorative blue ribbons, they all then watched as the names of the almost 3,000 victims of the attacks on the Twin Towers were read out.

“We stand in solidarity with their families and loved ones. We also honour the extraordinary heroism on display that fateful day by ordinary Americans helping their fellow Americans,” Harris said in a statement.

Harris and Biden – who have appeared several times together at political events since Biden bowed out following a disastrous debate against Trump – headed later to the site in Pennsylvania where a hijacked plane crashed on 9/11.

A third was flown into the Pentagon outside Washington.

US presidential debate

The solemn atmosphere could not have been more different to last night’s debate, the biggest night so far of the shortest and possibly the most dramatic election campaign in modern US history.

Both candidates declared victory but it was former prosecutor Harris who landed blows on issues including abortion, and repeatedly managed to bait convicted felon Trump into angry remarks on past grievances.

Trump also boosted a debunked claim about migrants eating pet cats and dogs in Ohio, earning a correction from the ABC moderator.

A CNN snap poll said Harris performed better than Trump by 63% to 37%, while a YouGov poll said Harris laid out a clearer plan by 43% to 32%.

US media and commentators broadly agreed that Harris had come out on top – but that it may not move the dial much in a deeply polarised and entrenched electorate.

Republican strategist Liam Donovan said Trump “largely whiffed” in his efforts to tie his opponent to Biden.

“It will surely boost morale at a time when Democrats are getting anxious,” he told AFP.

Harris got another boost with US pop megastar Taylor Swift offering her backing minutes after the debate.

Trump said Swift would “probably pay a price for it in the marketplace.”

But the race remains neck-and-neck going into the final stretch, and America’s first female, Black and South Asian vice president insists she is the underdog.

Harris heads Thursday to North Carolina and Trump is due onstage in Arizona, two of the half-dozen swing states expected to decide the election.

Try installing Windows Shell and Skip Metro Suite – both free, your Windows 8 will basically skip the live tiles, go straight to the desktop and the Start button is restored.

There are already better OSs available, if you’re not tied to windows specific software, then both OSX and Linux are far better, more secure operating systems. If you want to use an existing pc, then opt for linux, one of the many flavours of Ubuntu is worth checking out, lubuntu works well on older equipment, you can dual boot so you don’t loose windows while checking out linux.

You’re a funny man, if they can’t switch from metro to windows desktop on windows 8, how on earth do you expect them to use Linux? Or worse still, Mac OS?
MS may have made some errors with the stupid charms on Windows 8, but it’s still far better and does more than any other OS, that’s the reason Windows is still no. 1.

You’re missing Windows NT and Windows 2000 Pro,

Windows 2000 Pro was pretty rock solid as far as Windows went, Windows ME never should have been released instead they should have worked on game comparability for Windows 2000 Pro and released that to the general public instead of business only.

” I’d change the autoexec.bat file so that when it booted up next it would format the harddrive. ”

I didn’t think you could automatically confirm a y/n for something like that using ms dos.

Mine was along the same lines, except it installed automatically from a floppy disk, then four or five reboots later it deleted all of the exe files, renamed itself and the clean autoexec(old).bat file, then delete itself, leaving the non malicious file there. I created it because I was being sent abroad for a week, for work, and some smartass on work experience in the office started telling me, quite seriously, that he would take my job when I was gone. He was gone when I got back, not sure if it was my doing, or not.

Perhaps it isn’t a virus as you pointed out, malicious programme/file so.

Now you mention it, I might have used deltree rather than format. One way or another there was a switch that disabled the prompt. Was too long ago now.

Windows 8 is great, it runs very fast on laptops and is super compatible with everything, people can’t handle having to learn something new.. I found Windows 8 to be very user friendly, it took about 3 days to get used to the new interface…I suppose people out there want a modern looking windows xp?

Windows 95 was huge success by focusing on the end user. That was nearly 20 years ago. As response to recent editions has been luke-warm, what will the next 20 years bring us from MS?

@Susan – you can fields two free programmes that basically make your PC Win 7 again, the first is called Start Menu ( I think), and the second skips the tiles and goes straight to the Win 8 desktop, I can’t remember that one’s name though. They work a dream.

What about windows 2000? It came out at the same time as windows ME and was far superior, based on windows NT technology. Windows XP was not a successor to windows ME, it was a successor to windows 2000 because MS decided to abandon their extremely buggy stream that originated with windows 95 in favour of the one that originated with windows NT.

Is anyone still running CP/M or CP/M 86?
Used to need it to run WordStar, SuperCalc and dBaseII on an Apple II.

I think some CP/M machines are still running. Originated at JPL in Pasadena, IIRC.
Those were the days. I remember getting excited about 300baud modem speeds.

Geoworks/PC-Geos is worth mentioning. It came pre-installed on top of msdos on Philips PCs here in the early 90s. As well as the Nokia 9000 Smartphone, HP omnigo proto tablet and an ATT tablet. Stable fast and tightly coded. With great vector graphics. Everything Windows 3 was not. Microsoft forced manufacturers to buy licences for every PC they produced. Whether their product was installed. Killing off any competition before it could get a foothold.
