    It passed its best after Gaybo left…in all honesty it was his and only his gig. All the other incumbents in that chair have only been trying to catch him.since.

    @Maniac 2000: absolutely right. Multi-channel TV didn’t become commonplace til the mid 1990s (outside of Dublin).. Gaybo finished the Late Late in 1999, RTE was much better then, Nighthawks, Today Tonight but like everything else in Ireland that institution has regressed in the intervening quarter century.

    @Maniac 2000: if you lived in the West of Ireland up to 1978, the first 16 years of Byrne’s tenure, it was RTE1 only. Still a place for it, though, nowadays there’s to much filling stations schedules with US spinoffs of brainless guff (NCIS) or repeats. I like the fact it’s authentically Irish, although the addition of Kielty’s monologue (aping American chat shows, and Graham Norton) is a bit of a grating move away. The “comedy” is mostly laboured and predictable…

    The Late Late Show should always be preceded with a mental health warning and the phone number for the Samaritans – it’s a very depressing show which would normally feature interviews with people who had suffered a tragic bereavement or someone with a terminal illness or those unfortunates who were abused – If you value your mental health give it a miss.

    Dull would he be of soul who could pass by
    A sight so touching in its majesty:
    This City now doth, like a garment, wear
    The beauty of the morning; silent, bare,
    Ships, towers, domes, theatres, and temples lie
    Open unto the fields, and to the sky;
    All bright and glittering in the smokeless air.
    Never did sun more beautifully steep
    In his first splendour, valley, rock, or hill;
    Ne’er saw I, never felt, a calm so deep!
    The river glideth at his own sweet will:
    Dear God! the very houses seem asleep;
    And all that mighty heart is lying still!

    Whilst this poll is not representative of the entire population, a figure of less than 10% saying they will regularly watch is a damning inditment. Maybe there is still some value, particularly the Christmas show but it is time to reduce the overall airtime, peak slot and funding for the Late Late. It has long since been RTEs biggest spend and this no longer reflective of the Irish taste in TV.

Affair? It was a sex fest every moment they got a chance (bedrooms, taxi, laneways… Prob the bistro too!) Also, I’ve never seen so many trendy looking extras in a working class area, lol. Oh…can they do something about your woman walking up the street at the ad break? Throw in a trendy with a coffee maybe? Or have your woman walking back the other way at least. Where’s she even going?!? The rest of the cast: carry on. Respectful shout-out to Martina Shanley/Delores.

Okay, so they’re not A-listers but it’s amazing how interesting a less well known person’s life has been/is. Who would have tuned in to an interview with Charlie Bird 5 years ago?
