Blackrock diving tower in Salthill, Galway

Around 3,000 still without power in wake of Storm Ashley

There were winds of up to 80km/h in some parts of the country yesterday, with gusts of up to 130km/h.

LAST UPDATE | 21 Oct 2024

THERE ARE STILL around 3,000 homes and businesses without power following Storm Ashley, mostly in the west of the country, according to the ESB.

The number has come down from the roughly 16,000 reported earlier today, which had fallen to 8,000 by the afternoon.

ESB says it has made good progress and that crews and contractors remain deployed in impacted areas including Mayo and Galway.

Winds reached up to 80km/h in some parts of the country yesterday, with gusts of up to 130km/h.

The cleanup began today as the damage left by Storm Ashley was assessed.

In its first update this morning, Dublin Airport said winds had eased considerably.

“However, as a result of Sunday’s disruption at airports across Ireland, the UK and Europe, some knock-on delays today are inevitable as several airlines have aircraft out of position,” it said.

“A small number of flights have already been cancelled by airlines for today.

“Passengers due to fly today are advised to check with their airline for latest updates regarding their flight.”

In total on Sunday, airlines cancelled 81 flights, 39 go-arounds were performed and 34 aircraft opted to divert to other airports.

Some roads were closed in Northern Ireland yesterday, with a coastguard sharing footage of waves of water making the Portaferry road unpassable.

Video taken near Rossbeigh beach in Co Kerry yesterday evening show strong winds and flooding of the surrounding area.

On Croagh Patrick yesterday morning, Mayo Mountain Rescue came to the aid of a man in need of assistance on the mountain.

The full team was called out to help the man “who was having difficulty descending in 100Km plus winds,” the group said on Facebook. The rescue effort was reported by the Western People today.
“First responders made their way in very difficult conditions to the summit from the south side of the mountain while others were deployed to the Murrisk side to walk the track.
“The walker was eventually located in the Murrisk car park at 11:45 having been walked down with help from other walkers.”
The rescue team wished the man “a speedy recovery from his ordeal,” but advised walkers “to stay off the mountains during severe weather alerts from our excellent Met Service”.

@Ollie Fitzpatrick: Having the green bar on the reg plate is useful for traffic wardens checking on parking at EV charging points. A lot of non-electric cars park in front of chargers, blocking their use by drivers of electric vehicles. The bar on the plates is ultimately paid for by the car’s purchaser, so the public purse is left alone. I think it’s a good idea and is already being used elsewhere in Europe and in the UK also.

Ireland should be doing everything to become independent for its energy requirements. This would have been a bold step requiring huge plans for windfarms (on and offshore, tidal energy and investment in the development of these and other technologies).

The Greens could have led this. It would have addressed their mission plus provided value for citizens. None of this happened, there is no roadmap. Instead we have a party leader standing around with reg plates, detached from financial reality and trying to tax problems away as the only solution.

@Bat Boy: Huge windfarms destroy the countryside and also deliver zero when the wind doesn’t blow, thus requiring vast amounts of gas fired generators to kick in to stabilise the grid. Huge windfarms only line the pockets of the companies because the EU grants them to charge the same rates as gas fired plants. Wind energy is of no financial benefit to the consumer whatsoever.
Tidal Energy is, pardon the pun, dead in the water with little or no developments as it’s so costly to implement.
The only decent green tech is solar power. Every suitable house and building rooftop should be covered over as it’s reliable and cheap to deploy with the payback for investment rather quick. We should be using some of the Apple Billions to invest so householders (not middle men or large corpos) get to save on their energy costs.
As for your final paragraph, spot on.

Vancouver expects to be the first city in Canada with an electric fire truck. The electric fire truck costs $300k more than the diesel model. Pumps 40% less water and needs a diesel “extender” engine to make it useful. The future looks bright.

Just looking at the comments here makes me think that if the greens are not wiped out in the election (very possible!) they are certain to be a part of the next government.
They are absolutely ideal as mudflaps for FFG, and any other government, for environmental policies that the EU will impose.
They will get the blame regardless.

@P. J.: Whether you like it or not, a well-deserved blame. They used the fear that FF and FG have of SF, the fear that drove them together in the first place, to get whatever they wanted. For the minority party of a coalition, they wielded way more power than they should have been allowed but used the threat of pulling out and forcing another election to get what they wanted. How else do you explain some of the policies implemented. It’s funny how very little has been passed lately since the election talk started. As to the EU, while they may be the one imposing some of the policies, the Green Party TDs and MEPs are meant to be representing all Irish people and it never crossed their minds to look for delays in implementing such policies due to the continuing cost of living crisis.
