Tyrone farmer killed in farm accident

The industry in Northern Ireland has seen a growing number of fatalities in recent years.

A MAN IN his 70s has died following a farm accident in county Tyrone last night.

It is understood he was killed after falling into a piece of cattle feeding equipment on his farm at Killybracken Road in Dungannon.

The PSNI confirmed that an investigation into a fatal incident has been launched. Both police and fire service personnel are involved in the inquiry.

The Health and Safety Executive has also been notified and will carry out its own investigation in due course.

Ulster Farmers Union president Harry Sinclair told BBC News that it was “another tragedy for the industry”.

According to Sinclair, there has been an average of about one death per month in the past two years, a number he described as “tragic”.

Earlier this week, the group launched a targeted campaign of farm safety visits as part of a series of initiatives to address the increase in farm fatalities. The scheme is due to begin next month.

In the past five years, 41 people have been killed in Northern Ireland as a result of agricultural activities. Many more have been seriously injured.

Last month, Ulster rugby star Nevin Spence was killed, along with his older brother Graham and father Noel, when he entered a slurry pit on the family farm.

Nevin Spence and sister Emma went to the aid of father and brother

Well done to the Garda force again. They did not know it was an imitation when chasing the toe rag.

Excellent work by the Gardai. They had no idea that the gun was fake until after they arrested the culprit but they still gave chase and caught their man. Well done

When will the youth learn! if you want to rob a bank just become a bank clerk, then after a promtion you can rob all the money you want legally and retire on your terms. All this hands up stuff is so last decade.

I remember when I was a kid all fake guns (kids toys and such as pellet guns and the like were illegal) had to have big stupid bits of orange plastic on them or something else to make it look unrealistic. Fact is, lots of Irish people wouldn’t know a real gun from a replica, I’d say a very shoddy replica could easily fool me, especially in something as stressful as a hold up scenario. Reading this, maybe the old rules so obviously differentiating toys from the real thing weren’t a bad idea.
