'There are enough lampposts for us all': O'Gorman on early election posters springing up

Election posters can only be erected once the date of polling day has been fixed.

“THERE ARE ENOUGH lampposts for us all to enable us to show our wares over the next couple of weeks,” Green Party leader Roderic O’Gorman told reporters today, when asked whether he had concerns on early election posters beginning to spring up across Dublin.

The issue of early election posters has been topical in previous years, but has been particularly prevalent in the run-up to the highly anticipated general election of 2024, which is expected to be announced in the coming week.

Election posters can only be erected once the date of polling day has been fixed, and may be for 30 days preceding the election, unless there are less than 30 days between the announcement of the date and polling day itself.

Posters may be removed within seven days after polling day. Each violation of the law results in a €150 fine.

Fiann Fáil deputy leader, Jack Chambers, said that people should comply with the regulations surrounding postering for elections.

“Today is Friday, we could be in the middle of posters surrounded by us by Friday of next week, depending on when the Taoiseach dissolves the Dáil,” he said. “But look, people should comply with the wider rules that are set by local authorities, and people have plenty of time to put up their posters for the election campaign.”

O’Gorman agreed with Chambers, telling reporters that he had already seen a number of posters around D15.

Speaking today, Taoiseach Simon Harris said he has consistently said he won’t be “dilly-dallying or waiting around once that piece of legislation (Finance Bill) is passed”.

“So the exact choreography is a matter for during the week. But there will be an election in the coming days,” Harris added.

@Mel Fitzpatrick: Imagine not being able to understand that without a horse in the race you have no opportunity to change anything. Same argument is used against the clothes or technology that environmental protesters own… it holds no water then either. (I don’t support the Green Party in Ireland but the logical fallacy/trope is overused)

Do we really need those posters all around the place? Microplastics fly off them everywhere.
Does being surrounded by smug faces actually increase voter turnout?
In my area I can still see posters from the local elections… no point reporting them to the County Council, they already know and do nothing…

The most hated man in Ireland, a guy who has done immeasurable damage to our country, costing us Billions now annually, thanks to his crazy tweet. Communities now riven apart because of this vile individual. He has destroyed Tourism along the Western seaboard in less than two years, that took decades to build. His handling of the Mother & Baby Homes & Adoptive people seeking their Rights has been disgraceful, the sooner he & his party are removed forever, the better.

There are plenty of lampposts for him, the ‘greens’ & the other corrupt politicians to hang from – not just their posters.

The current gov’t represent Davos & Brussels NOT the best interests of the native Irish people. The only people they care about is themselves.

Where are all the missing children under this Minister’s watch. This child is one of hundreds missing. Why isn’t the Govt appointee to Tusla being questioned by the media. Surely in any society, so many missing children would be top of the agenda for all Media, asking the questions. Not in Ireland though, as all Journalism is in the pocket of Govt, RTE’s silence was bought for €725 Million. It seems we can’t upset the Minister or question him, lest we offend him. Being photographed with a vile individual in the UK is another story Let’s get those in charge of Tusla & the Minister, answering where are all these Missing Children, it’s a scandal similar to other scandals involving children in this State. It beggars belief that this Govt, Tusla & the entire Irish MSM all turn a blind eye.
