We need to be more creative and develop self sustainable industries that aren’t dependant on foreign investors.

We are a small country with an open economy – we couldn’t possible create the scale to replace these jobs with indigenous industry. And I have worked for US multinationals for the last 25 years – I know exactly how they work. I’ve been made redundant by them four times, ffs, as they have moved my role to another jurisdiction. That’s the game, and that’s how it works. We need to make sure that Ireland attracts the high value and high skilled jobs from these companies, and let them locate their lower skilled ones in countries with lower wages. Oh and by the way, that homophobia is rampant, it’s not a small minority, not online anyway.

@Ross: that game that I am playing is called capitalism – there is no job protection for anyone, regardless of if the company ownership is in Ireland or the US or anywhere else. I used to work for an Irish tech company – the owners sold it to a US multi-national, and I lost my job in the aftermath. Also part of this game that I play is the four exit packages that I have negotiated for myself from each of those redundancies. Sometimes I have walked out with the cash and straight into another job, other times I have spent some time unemployed. All in all, I’ve been good to multi-nationals, and they’ve been good to me

I broke my back for a multi national in an effort to gain security, a permanent role, did everything I could. Then one random Tuesday in March this year I was handed a letter at half past 2 in the afternoon. “Sorry you’re no longer needed etc.” And that wasn’t the first time.

They drop us on a whim, like we’re nothing. That’s what you get when you play the capitalism game. No heart, all money.
