Pics: The agony and the ecstasy of the Dublin City Marathon

Anyone for muscle cramp?

COMPETITORS ARE RUNNING, walking and crawling over the finishing line at the Dublin City Marathon this afternoon with male and female race winners already determined.

Over 14,300 people are taking part in today’s event with Geoffrey Ndungu of Kenya claiming first place in just over 2 hours and 11 minutes. Compatriot Magdalene Mukunzi, took the women’s race in a time of 2 hours and 30 minutes.

Luke Jones of Wales took the wheelchair section, coming in after just 2 hours and 3 minutes but for thousands of others there was still over halfway to go at that point.

Congratulations to everyone who took part! It’s something I’d love to do (but haven’t got the required levels of willpower or discipline).
    Great achievement!!!

Good that people are interested in staying fit and challenging themselves, but I can’t help wondering what those 26 miles of asphalt and the hundreds of miles of training in the lead up are doing to their joints.
Human beings are built to run but you wouldn’t kick the side of a house for 4 hours and not expect damage.

We are actually designed to be able to run for several hours non-stop. If you look at how we hunted in the past (and some still do!) it was by tracking animals for long periods of time until they became exhausted and eventually had to stop… That’s when we came in!

dont buy all this ” imaging what it does to your joints” talk ..warm up and stretching and plenty of flexibility exercise eg yoga and a lifetime of injury free running is possible… usually the people who say this dont run and save their joints by sitting in front of the t.v. eating frozen pizzas and microwave ready meals

@jim ahh – The Phoenix Park is around 8 miles circumference and the Marathon is 26.2 miles long, and before you say – do laps, you are talking about 14,000 people running at different speeds. Secondly, there is 40+ nationalities running through the capital, being cheered on by thousands of people. So a great platform to showcase the city and the friendly people, and thirdly, every city in the world runs a Marathon through it, closing it off. There was no place you couldn’t get to either, without a bit of forward planning
My question to you now is…do you really realize how petty your comment really sounds? Did you really need to make it ?

start small, try one km every two days or so then gradually build up. stop when you’re tired, speed up when you like and listen to your body. don’t expect to be Usain Bolt as soon as you start out, everyone’s gotta start somewhere! Don’t aim to be better than anyone else, always aim to improve on yourself! get good shoes, stay hydrated and eat a staedy amount of carbs. good luck to you. sir!

Huge thank you to the people of Dublin for the support for every step of yesterday’s race. It was just wave after wave of support and encouragement, as well as bowls of jellies and orange slices. I’ve never experienced anything like it and spoke at the end to a lady from Minnesota who was overwhelmed by the atmosphere all the way round. Take a bow every one of you.

I think they are fantastic, as I struggle with my 4-5 kms a day !

I just wish they didn’t block the city up for a day.

Why not run in the Phoenix Park ? Or Mondello Park ? Or straight down the N7 for 13 or so miles and then back up the other side, closing one lane only.

I can’t get in or out of the city on a bank holiday Monday because of it.

I would have thought that point was obvious …
