All ferry services between Dublin and Holyhead cancelled today due to Storm Darragh damage

The cancellations and consequent delays come at a very busy time of year as Christmas approaches.

FERRY SERVICES BETWEEN Dublin and Holyhead have been cancelled due to infrastructure damage at the Welsh port caused by Storm Darragh.

Both Irish Ferries and Stena Line have cancelled all voyages to and from Holyhead today and tomorrow’s early sailings have also been cancelled.

The cancellations and consequent delays come at a very busy time of year as Christmas approaches.

Irish Ferries customers can check the status of their sailings here. Stena Line passengers can check their sailings here.

A spokesperson for Stena Line said: “On Saturday morning during Storm Darragh, an incident occurred at Holyhead Port causing damage to port infrastructure.

“No injuries were reported, and all relevant authorities have been informed. As a result, Holyhead Port is currently closed to marine traffic and, at this time, it is expected that the port will remain closed until 18:00 Tuesday at the earliest, while a thorough assessment is conducted.”

Storm Darragh battered Ireland and the UK with powerful winds over the weekend, with Status Red wind warnings being issued in both countries.

Wales was hit particularly hard by the storm.

Irish Road Haulage Association president Ger Hyland told RTÉ radio today that some of his members have trucks waiting for trailers on both sides of the Irish Sea.

“This is something that’s part of living on an island,” he said. “We just have to get on with it and we live with it.”

“But it’s not easy on our members,” he said, explaining that “for the next two days the trucks are going to be idle”.

The delays will have a knock-on effect on supply chains for days to come as costs mount for drivers and their employers.

Don’t like the grey paving, has completely taken away the feel and character. Also it stains and gets dirty too easy. Grafton street could be any street now.
Doesn’t matter what I say now as the red brick is gone but it’s a terrible shame. Awful decision by the council.

Agreed. Glad I’m not the only one. How do these changes get passed and paid for.

They get passed and paid for because Dublin doesn’t have a democratically elected mayor in charge of the city. It’s time to do away with four separate councils for what is actually a small city and bring in a directly elected mayor with executive powers and open up a real dialogue between the administration of Dublin and Dubliners.

A city of 1.3 million should have an elected mayor, someone to be held responsible. Dublin City and County councils is more than enough. My how city of London has 33 councils, to many councils for 8.3 million people.

The work to date on Grafton street is a disgrace. How many million spent and the paving is left filthy dirty and stained. The bollards and lights are the cheapest looking street furniture I have seen anywhere. I ve also noticed some of the paving is loose underfoot already, not a good sign. Dublin City council are not up to the task of looking after Dublin city in my opinion.

They ruined Grafton street with the grey paving. Whatever about the red, at least it was unique. Grafton street now looks like any other street and it looks worse as a result if the staining from all the garbage water from the rubbish bags that are left out in the early morning.

They could have used the new red paving on each junction on the whole street. It looks so dull and boring. Henry street now actually looks like a finer street. What’s with the awful bottle green bollards and lights shaped like a leaf? I don’t get it.

I could never really see the retail attraction on Grafton Street anyway. Over the years its character has been ruined with tourist shops, mobile phone stores etc. it’s more the smaller back streets off Grafton Street which carry the area. As for the grey paving, going to be very hard to maintain. As others have pointed out, it looks filthy already. Particularly when chewing gum gets stuck to it and blackens. However, with retail now creeping around the corner into college green (A&F, H&M etc.) and with the bohemian vide now emerging from Dame Street and George’s Street (new eateries etc) and with the future pedestrianisation of College Green, it will, in about 7 – 10 years be a vibrant destination to go to.

It amazes me how with all of the modern equipment available it is taking two years to complete this job, whereas in the 1850′s workmen could lay around fiftty miles of rail track using picks and shovels through mountains and bogs in a similar time period.
