Taoiseach speaking to the staff of the new national pelvic floor centre in Dun Laoghaire. Damien Eagers

Ireland's first national pelvic floor health clinic opens in Dublin

Approximately 23% of women suffering some form of pelvic floor disorder in their lifetime.

IRELAND’S FIRST NATIONAL Pelvic Floor Health Centre has been opened at St Michael’s Hospital in Dun Laoghaire today.

The new centre provides a holistic and multidisciplinary approach to addressing the needs of patients with complex pelvic floor dysfunction, such as pelvic organ prolapse and bladder or bowel incontinence.

The condition primarily affects women, with 23% of women suffering some form of pelvic floor disorder in their lifetime.

Approximately one in three women experience urinary incontinence postpartum. Faecal incontinence is less common, occurring in one in 25 new mothers.

The centre, opened by Taoiseach Simon Harris today, facilitates rapid diagnosis and is a collaborative approach taken by St Michael’s Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital and the National Maternity Hospital.

The CEO of St Michael’s Hospital, Sharon Ryan said today that since the specialist team expanded under the service, which is consultant-led, a reduction in waiting of 12 months has been achieved. In recent years, the number of patients attending the pelvic floor service increased by 152%.

The new centre, which is the first and only multidisciplinary clinic for the assessment and management of pelvic floor conditions, means appointments for dedicated physiotherapy for pelvic health can average 56 appointments per week.

The Taoiseach said the new dedicated centre provides an innovative approach and establishes new treatment pathways for people with pelvic floor dysfunction. He said it will have a significant impact on waiting times.

It is impossible to get a refferal there unless u have just had a baby. It was part of the midwife services and then expanded into gynae but it won’t take people who have suffered for years, only brand new incidents. In france you are given devices for pelvic floor and diastasis recti surgery postnatally. Women in ireland are just told abdominal separation is just a normal part being a pregnancy. The plastic surgeons union took breast reduction out of the hands of public & said they will only provide it privately at 10k or more. Give any human the top heavy weight of large breasts a 3 inch separation in their core and no pelvic floor strength & watch them disappear into the invisible generation of women who are told by government their only value is at home caring for elderly or children.

@miss lojo: A simple solution to that would be to ban private breast reduction surgery.

Canada only allow public medical health care.

It’s time we did the same.

@ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere: why would anyone ‘BAN’ a surgery that’s so effective & prevents back pain amongst other medical conditions? Surely that would simply create further uncontrolled ‘surgery’ tourism?

@Frank Mc Carthy: isn’t ‘Itwaslike….’ saying ban private and only allow public? That way the service would be provided by public hospitals? That was my understanding

@ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere: Canada is seeing record waiting times due to their crumbling Socialised medical system. The average wait time to see a GP across the country is eight months and in Prince Edward Island, it’s nearly fifteen months. 60% of Canadians waited longer than a month to see a specialist and 45% of Canadians waited longer than three hours in a hospital, with 10% of people waiting up to a shocking eighteen hours. Screw your head on properly and ask yourself how pumping more people into a single system that is already overflowing for breast surgery would be beneficial at all. We need to privatise the HSE and move to a system where people directly pay doctors and hospitals and not through tax revenue. Your idea of even more government control would make things much worse.

@Pork Hunt: What about the men’s! lol! I’m sure all the men with pelvic floor dysfunction will get equal access. However, it will still be a service with 99% women what with childbearing and all… unless you want equal access to that too??

@S Suilleabhain: I’m afraid your comment clearly shows that you don’t understand what actually happened and that you don’t understand how screening works.
There are many articles and explainers out there that calmly, dispassionately and unpolitically describe the time line of events, how the screening process works, how audits work, how it works internationally and how other countries would have handled the very same situation.
Just do a search and read.
