Poll finds Irish American voters leaning towards Obama - but only just

The IrishCentral poll found 51 per cent of Irish American voters plan to vote for Barack Obama with 48 per cent leaning towards Mitt Romney.

IRISH AMERICAN VOTERS are leaning towards incumbent Barack Obama over Republican challenger Mitt Romney – but only just.

A poll asking how Irish Americans plan to vote in Tuesday’s US Presidential election found Obama has a marginal lead of 51 per cent to Romney’s 48 per cent. One per cent of voters said they remain undecided.

The poll of just over 1,100 respondents was carried out for IrishCentral by Amárach Research.

Irish Americans have traditionally tended to favour Democratic party candidates but Michael McLoughlin of Amárach Research noted that simple stereotypes of the Irish American community are no longer as valid as they once were. ”This is a huge ethnic group – with diverse beliefs, views and goals,” he told IrishCentral.

The survey found 57 per cent of respondents had voted for Barack Obama in the 2008 election while 43 per cent had voted for Republican candidate John McCain, indicating a significant shift away from supporting the president.

Latest opinion polls ahead of Tuesday’s election show that the two candidates are almost tied, although Obama is slightly ahead in most swing states.

Yes. They both are terrible candidates. I do not believe there is democracy in the US, if there was you would have 4 to 6 parties and several candidates.
Instead we have the Green party presidential candidate getting arrested this week while trying to get into the presidential candidates debate between Romney and Obama.
American people living in Ireland : how about deliberating upon a candidate from a different party rather than Democrat or a Republican.

Yet again Declan, you fail to see that a single system of government rule does not work in every part of the world. There are places where democracy dies not work and a different system of governance is required.

The two parties even dominate in local/state politics where it is much easier for third party candidates to run for office. You want to explain that B Lowe? Could it be that that the third parties in the US are shit? The Green party can can barely get elected in Ireland. That Green Party candidate you are talking about getting arrested, has run for office in Massachusetts lots of different times and has never been close to winning. The only political office she has held was town council. If she cannot get elected in the most liberal state in the US why would they include her in a Presidential debate?

Declan, if you think there is currently genuine democracy in the US then you are misguided.
Anyway your entitled to your belief.
The Syrian government is currently trying to defend itself from terrorists. Any sovereign states is entitled to.

The Libertarian party are good. Their presidential candidate is Gary Johnson. They agree with most of Obamas social policies like health. But are completely anti war. Their economic policies are conservative.

@Bryan it’s not a republic it’s a federal government that uses a first past the post system. We are a republic and we use proportional representation.

Both are democracies but I think what you meant was its ‘less democratic’ than countries like ours that use PR. ie. If 23% of the people vote labour then 23% of TD’s are labour. It’s a superior and fairer system, which also places far less power in the hands of one man. Guess for a country that claims to represent democracy they could probably do it a little better. But then again it’s such a huge country it needs to be federal, but maybe using PR would be better.

Obama has been mediocre, and barely more than third term Bush by upping drone killings and ending one war in Iraq leaving a sectarian dictatorship roughly when Bush would have, starting one in Libya which may or may work out, and carrying on Afghanistan. Guantanamo Bay is open, Homeland Security agents are still groping children. Election nights are fun to watch, but it’s just a competition between two banking and corporate drones.
