The 9 at 9 The nine stories you need to know this morning.

EVERY DAY, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine stories you need to know as you kick off your day.

1. #QUINNS: The former Anglo Irish Bank has made two official complaints to the Garda Fraud Squad over allegedly fraudulent actions by members of the Quinn family, the Sunday Times reports. The reports, one made last year and the other made earlier this year, were to encourage Gardaí to launch a formal criminal investigation into Seán Quinn and other family members.

2. #DEATH: Gardaí are investigating after the body of a man was found in a house in Waterford. A post mortem is due to be carried out today. Gardaí have not yet said whether the death is suspicious.

3. #FREE TRAVEL: The Government is considering means testing pensioners for free travel passes, according to reports this morning. The Sunday Business Post says the means-testing would be introduced as part of a range of measures to meet demands from the Troika that universal payments should be scaled back.

4. #ANTI-ABORTION: Between 2,000 and 3,000 people took part in an anti-abortion protest in Taoiseach Enda Kenny’s home town of Castlebar in Mayo yesterday. The march, organised by Youth Defence and the Mayo Life Network, called on the Taoiseach to follow through on the anti-abortion promises Fine Gael made during last year’s general election.

5. #USA 2012: With just two days to go until polls open in the US presidential election, both candidates are spending the final days campaigning in swing states as a new poll by ABC News/Washington Post suggests the pair are tied at 48 per cent each. Mitt Romney will campaign in Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia between now and Tuesday while Barack Obama is travelling to New Hampshire, Florida, Ohio and Colorado.

6. #PROSPERITY: It may not feel like it but a study by a London-based think-tank has found that prosperity in Ireland has increased over the past year. The global prosperity index compiled by the Legatum Institute ranked Ireland as the 10th most prosperous country in the world.

7. #NEW YORK: Almost one million people in New York remain without power after superstorm Sandy as NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg has said power companies have not acted aggressively enough to restore electricity to many parts of the state, the BBC reports.

8. #TRAGEDY: Meanwhile also in New York, police have charged a nanny with the murder of two children found stabbed to death in an apartment last week. Yoselyn Ortega was charged in hospital where she is recovering from self-inflicted stab wounds, according to the New York Times.

9. #THE MAMMY: Mary O’Rourke has taken on Cheryl Cole – and won. Figures show that the former Fianna Fáil TD’s memoir Just Mary has taken the number one spot on the bestseller list this week, pipping the singer to the post. O’Rourke’s book has sold 1,300 copies in one week while Cole’s memoir sold 960 copies.

Who in their right mind would waste several hours of their life reading either of the above biographies?

Disappointed that Michael McDowell s interview yesterday on radio failed to make the journal (the Irish Times online features it). He discussed the dangers of media ownership being in the hands of a few super rich and how jimmy saville s sex life was filling the papers while moves to force a federal European superstate go totally unreported.

Would a European superstate mean an end to the gombeen men and the sleeveens that we elect around the funeral parlours and parish pumps of this country? And are the rumours of a national protest on the 24th of November true?

the reports were to “encourage” Gardaí to launch a formal criminal investigation….since when is it necessary to encourage the Gardai to prosecute someone….the evidence is there ,get on with it!!!

notice how the politicians are not ‘looking’ at the troikas suggestions that they cut their own pay and expenses.!
yet again hitting those that can afford it least , as for the ‘superstate’ idea, they cany run europe as seperate states ,imagine the balls up they’d make of one superstate.
