NFL confirms Croke Park will host landmark fixture later this year

The Pittsburgh Steelers have strong Irish connections and will be the ‘home’ team at GAA HQ.

THE PITTSBURGH STEELERS will play the first ever competitive NFL game to take place in Ireland when they return to Croke Park later this year.

The NFL confirmed the landmark move at a press conference on Friday afternoon, which will see one of America’s most famous sporting institutions host a 2025 regular-season fixture at the home of Gaelic Games.

The event will see the NFL work in conjunction with the Irish government and the GAA.

The exact date and the Steelers’ opponents for the fixture are yet to be confirmed, but a September meeting with the Green Bay Packers has been mooted for several weeks.

The Steelers have significant Irish connections. The Rooney family, who originally emigrated to Pittsburgh from Newry, Co. Down, during the 1800s, founded the Steelers in 1933 and remain the franchise’s majority owners.

The Steelers are currently run by Art Rooney II, who inherited the responsibility from his father, the late Dan Rooney, a former US ambassador to Ireland. Under Dan Rooney’s presidency, the Pennsylvania-based Steelers played an NFL pre-season game at Croke Park in July 1997, when they faced the Chicago Bears.

The Steelers who, along with the New York Jets and Jacksonville Jaguars, hold the NFL’s exclusive international marketing rights in Ireland, will be the designated home team in Dublin.

The historic fixture will be the Steelers’ first international game since they met the Minnesota Vikings at London’s Wembley Stadium in September 2013.

As well as the Steelers’ pre-season game with the Bears 28 years ago, Croke Park has also previously hosted college football games, the last being a meeting of Penn State and the University of Central Florida in August 2014.

The Aviva Stadium has played host to the four more recent installments of the ‘College Football Classic’, three of which have taken place in consecutive years since 2022.

The Steelers have won a record-tying six Super Bowls, placing them joint top of the modern-day NFL standings alongside the New England Patriots.

@Chin Feeyin: That a good choice… Keep the blueshirts in power at the pehest of F.F. One brought the country to it’s knees and the other one F.G. just added to the mess. If you are happy with a housing crisis, homelessness, crumbling health service, scandal after scandal the FFG coalition is the way to go.

And I remember when telecoms infrastructure was state owned as Aer Lingus, Bin collection, and we had a lot more social housing.
We also had a top rate of tax at almost 70% accessed at the average industrial wage (similar to the 40% rate now)
Yes FG have f**ked up on the NCH (FF should have gone to the country on that, especially the way brexit has been delayed) but no socialist government on this planet has managed to achieve it’s goals without increased taxes.

@Aisling: Her main thing is to much inward migration of the wrong kind, and the other thing I think your on about is the jab, she is not against it but it has to be 100% safe which it is not for 100% of the population. And the chem trails thing that did happen in the past trying to make it rain and experimenting with the weather read up on it. the actual chem trails used to last for a few hours but the vapor trails dispersed within an half hour to an hour so a lot of people around the world are still suspicious of it and don’t thrust governments or scientists on the subject. I’m on the fence about it ya have to keep an open mind on things, She also broke the McCabe story when they approached her about it she unearthed corruption in the Garda and wrote about it a few time and was let go over it and she brought a case against D.O.B and got alot of money off him. So now she is trying to expose corruption in government and rte it does seem very biased in alot of their stories. Not nice to be calling people that you don’t agree with insane, not fair on the people who are suffering a mental illness.

That NZ was a false flag. That Lidl will only hire transgender people. That Peter Mc Verry has done nothing for homelessness. That the airport only has a mosque room, they’re preparing us for Islam take over (didn’t mention that there’s a whole church onsite). That her Pilates class resembled a mosque because people were facing same direction and bent over on their yoga mats. Oh yeah, she’s totally sane.

@Aisling: I’ve never remembered her say anything about mass beheadings in Ireland, and the Muslim thing that could happen in a 100 or so years the Muslim faith is growing by 5000 every census and accelerating as numbers increase. And the room they had at the airport was full of crosses and religious figures and pictures they have been all removed and she did acknowledge that there was an actual church on site go back and watch again. Saying lidl will Only hire trans people I think you made that up or misheard. I don’t think see is a bad person just well meaning she comes across as someone who loves her country and its culture and for the population to grow naturally over time. I got curious about her when I heard people mentioning her in my taxi so i had a look at some of her vids and back story, some of the stuff she says would be like Marmite to some and not to others she has 15000 subs I think and growing in not one of them by the way. Why would anyone make a video about a room that used to be a room full of Christian paraphernalia but has since been repurposed as there’s already a church on site? She did also question whether Lyra McKee was actually a journalist and if she was actually killed by a terrorist group by the way. That’s not a good person. If she only took medicine that was 100% safe she’d be dead by now.

@Andrea Murray: You’re jumping through a few hoops and presumptions to find reasons to dislike the Social Democrats there…
On the greens, there’s nothing inherently wrong with water charges on high usage. The issue under FG/Lab was the attempt to privatise through Irish Water.

@Andrea Murray: What do you mean by the Soc Dems not having a great attitude on Repeal? Here in Galway one of the Soc Dems City Council Candidates was co-convenor of the Galway Repeal/TFY group and the other two candidates in the city were out canvassing for Repeal every day of the campaign.

Soc Dems also opposed water charges.

So not entirely sure where you’re coming from.

I’ll be giving a preference to every party and individual who are pro-choice and were active in Repeal. I know locally that makes Soc Dems, Greens and PBP/Solidarity (and SF even though I am suspect of the SF candidate in my ward as I don’t remember him doing much during repeal but he’s better than an anti getting in!).

I think it’s important for everyone who supported repeal to vote along a pro-choice line as much as is possible- the antis are very much using these local and EU elections as a means to gather their base and do a rerun of the referendum.

Yes to both. I hope it is a high poll, and also a bad day our for FG/EPP and FF/ALDE. The Soc Dems have a well-balanced and radical policies, and I would urge people to keep them in mind next Friday.

Any vote for FF or Labour is a vote for them in backing this government, it’s crazy…
