Support from readers like you keeps The Journal open.

You are visiting us because we have something you value. Independent, unbiased news that tells the truth. Advertising revenue goes some way to support our mission, but this year it has not been enough.

Money Diaries Are you on top of your money? Would you like to keep a diary for us?

It’s that time again when we seek out Money Diaries contributors… are you game? Go on, you know you want to…

WELL YOU MIGHT not know this, but it’s springtime, technically, and even though it’s bitterly cold still, there are little signs that brighter evenings are coming.

And that often means more movement, more socialising, travelling and more spending. Have you prepared financially for this foray back into the real world? Have you been busy saving through the winter? Surely you saved a wad of cash over Christmas and January at least?

With this in mind, we thought you’d like to consider keeping one of our money diaries to keep track of how your finances are looking. In honour of the seasons changing, why not take a snapshot of your spending and saving habits?

Readers at The Journal will be familiar with our popular How I Spend My Money series, which looks at how people in Ireland really handle their income and outgoings. Over the years, the series has chronicled the lives and financial ups and downs of hundreds of readers.

We are asking you to get in touch and write a Money Diary to help us build a picture of your financial lives in Ireland right now…

Money Diaries Artwork

Would my diary be of interest?

Absolutely. Everyone is in a different place when it comes to money and will have different incomes and outgoings.

Everyone also has different approaches to finances. For instance, are you a good saver, or does money burn a hole in your pocket? Can you afford a pension? What about mortgages, are you confident you could qualify for one, are you meeting your mortgage payments?

If none of the above even seems remotely possible right now, then we also want to hear from you. It’s not an easy time, and we get that, so you might just feel like saying ‘I can’t make ends meet’ and that’s ok too.

How does it work?

Over the course of a week, we ask you, our readers, to keep a record of how much you earn, what you save if anything, and what you spend your money on.

Send a message of interest to money@thejournal.ie and we will send back a diary template.

Our Money Diaries readers also love to hear about your day, what kind of routine you have, what you had for dinner – all of it. Woven into that is a note through the day about how much you spent on groceries, incidentals and other expenses.

Readers often get helpful information and tips from reading the diaries, so include details about Revolut vaults or other handy savings tips you might have.

What next?

If you’re interested in keeping a diary for a week, send an email to money@thejournal.ie and we’ll get in touch. We would love to hear from you.

Seems to be a growing trend where companies are shutting up shop and to hell with the workers, and a lot of these companies are using the recession as an excuse to say they can’t afford redundancy payments, been happening with a few years now and it needs to stop and as usual the shower of muppets that are in government couldn’t give a flying fuck and they’ll still come after the workers for the household charge.

Not paying redundancy and getting the state to pick up the tab has been going on for years. Happened to me in 2008.

This non payment of redundancy is becoming more and more common! When the government decided to cut the states contribution to statutory redundancy, their wasn’t a peep from the unions! The reason for that’s quite obvious though! Because this massive cut in redundancy contribution from the state doesn’t affect public sector workers, the unions don’t care! As long as the Croke park agreement remains in place, unions will keep their heads down! Just look at how they had to be dragged into the household charge debate! Unions should have been the first on board to protest against something that massively discriminates against the less well off! Any private sector worker paying union dues might as well be throwing money down the drain!

I have two friends and one distant relative working for this company – two of which just got promoted a month a go.
Now they are sacked with little or no money!
They all have been working for “Game” for years.
Its a absolute disgrace that they are doing it and that also they can get away with it – but then our government is too busy bullying people themselves at the moment to be looking into this matter!

Good luck to you all. Stay strong. The workers in Cork are still there, fighting to the end. They mean business and I hope that their’s will be sorted soon.

Fine Gael have no idea how these people are feeling. One only has to look at the faces of the poor workers in Cork to see the stress they’re going through. Don’t give up, you have huge support.

And what government think about it?
I think the government should legalise “sell goods and get what should be yours” allowing legally to do it. And helping with accountancy.
