Over 650 historic buildings across Ireland to receive funding for restoration and repair

The buildings in question include ‘modest traditional homes’ and ‘landmark public buildings’.

OVER 650 HISTORIC buildings across Ireland are to receive state funding to facilitate restoration, repairs, and conservation.

A total of €8.1m will be disseminated to the buildings under the Built Heritage Investment Scheme 2025 (BHIS). The sum includes €1.25 in support for thatched buildings.

The buildings in question include “modest traditional homes” and “landmark public buildings”.

Minister of State for Nature, Heritage, and Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan, yesterday announced the list of projects to be awarded the funding. The full list can be viewed here.

Funding is dedicated to each county council. Dublin City Council has 103 properties receiving grants from BHIS, amounting to over €1.1 million. Kerry County Council has 34 properties receiving funding amounting to over €236,000. Cork County Council has 18 buildings receiving funding totalling €441,000.

Leitrim County Council is receiving the least amount of funding under the scheme. Four buildings are receiving funding of €108,000.

A number of churches, bars, and even Dublin Zoo have been allocated funding.

McDaid’s Bar, Dublin 2

McDaid’s Bar on 3 Harry Street, Dublin 2, has been allocated €20,250 in funding to restore the shopfronts in place in the bar.

Famously a beacon for much of Ireland’s literary talent, the pub was frequented by Irish poet and writer Brendan Behan and novelist Patrick Kavanagh.

The pub is reputed to have once housed the Dublin City Morgue and was later converted into a chapel for the Moravian Brethren.

St Mary’s Cathedral, Kilkenny

In Kilkenny, St Mary’s Cathedral on James Street has been allocated €7,000 for works on its external walls.

The building’s construction began in 1843 and finished in 1857. The cost of the building is said to have been roughly £25,000 at the time.

Former Grehan’s music shop, Roscommon

The former Grehan’s music shop in Boyle, Co Roscommon, has been awarded €26,000 for the conservation of the shopfront and historic glass in the building.

It was built around the year 1870.

An appraisal by the National Built Heritage Service said of the building: “B. Grehan’s is part of an attractive, nineteenth-century terrace, situated on the Main Street leading from King House.

“It has a number of architecturally-interesting features such as its entrance door, sash windows, timber shopfront and stone outbuildings. Its form, proportion and detailing make this a notable building on Main Street, leading directly into the centre of Boyle.”

In addition to the funding provided under BHIS, owners and custodians will themselves commit an estimated €29.5m to these projects from private sources, the department said.

€1.25m of the €8.1m in total funding will be allocated to thatched buildings. This consists of €600,000 from the dedicated Historic Thatched Buildings stream, and an additional €650,000 awarded from the main stream of the BHIS.

Subject to funding, both the Built Heritage Investment Scheme and the Historic Thatched Buildings Scheme will be open to new applications this July for projects for completion next year.

Poor girl. If this is true the sentence will be minimal…to add to her distress.
Worrying trend of assaults lately. And punishments are silly.
I hope she will be ok.

Totally unrelated to this story, but how come on Facebook the journal post the story of the chap stabbed to death & anyone can comment on it but nobody can comment here.
Regardless of the fact Facebook may have different rules. The main reason i see comments not allowed on the journal is for legal reasons, then why bother to post them on Facebook if it has legal ramifications ? surely the eyes of the law don’t care if its the comment section on the journal or Facebook.

Young as 10 are allowed out of the premises unsupervised. Toilets are unsupervised where a lot off the action takes place. OK I could go on. But my heart goes out to that poor girl and her family. They will get the toerags who have done but that won’t alleviate the pain for this young girl

@Warthog: How do I know this? Firstly I have a 12 yr old daughter. Secondly i have direct information from othet students, guards and bouncers. Parents are failing on their duty og care by letting their children go to these money grabbing very poorly supervised events. People should be arrested. We have a youth club underage disco where we have parents montitoring everything. Parents have to collect their children. While at the disco they are not allowed out the door unless a parent is their to collect them or they are with one of the supervising parents.

@Warthog: Messed up on the word count and lost first part of my first message… Young as 10…
Was saying before that is that these underage discos are “sex events “. Alcohol, some drugs are taken before the discos. Girls go commando. Slut runs of different varieties are normal as is the swooping of different bodily fluids. The supervision is non existent. These events need to be stopped or come under a whole new set of “care” rules. All these places want Is cash as they dont give a damn aboutvthe kids.

@Warthog: Ah yes I remember being 10 years old during summer time: video games, bit of soccer, riding our BMXs round the neighbourhood, and when we were too tuckered out from all that we’d snort a few lines bought with saved up pocket-money and get in the finger-bang queue down the local sex event

Sure a bit of hyperbole never hurt anyone

@Warthog: ya a friend of mine does security, and it’s truly shocking what goes on at these events. They can’t control them. And these are seasoned security personnel.

@Warthog: surely you are thinking of an older age group?? I find your comments a bit disturbing. I run a disco for 10 to 12 year olds. NONE of that happens. Where are you talking about?
Slut runs??? Wtf? Disgusting turn of phrase.
