October highest month in 10 years for enforcement orders

The Food Safety Authority said that 12 closure orders and 6 prohibition orders were served on food businesses last month.

OCTOBER SAW THE most enforcement orders issued in 10 years on food businesses.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) said that 12 closure orders and six prohibition orders were served on food businesses last month.

Seventeen of the enforcement orders were issued by environmental health officers in the Health Service Executive and one by local authority veterinary inspectors in Cork County Council for breaches of food safety legislation, pursuant to the FSAI Act, 1998 and the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010.

Enforcement orders

Seven closure orders were served under the FSAI Act, 1998 on:

  • Chinaman Take Away, Main Street, Oranmore, Galway
  • Nirala Sweets (restaurant), 35 Clanbrassil Street, Dublin 8
  • Slovakpoint (grocery), 5 Lavitt’s Quay, Cork
  • The Delight House Take-Away, Main Street, Bruree, Limerick
  • Campbell Catering trading as Aramark Ireland, Athlone Accommodation Centre (RIA) restaurant (closed area: kitchen and related areas), Cornamaddy, Athlone, Westmeath
  • Pizza House (take-away), Main Street, Ballinlough, Roscommon
  • Chilli Kebabish (take-away), 15 Ellen Street, Limerick

Five closure orders were served under the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010 on:

  • Jade Dragon (restaurant), The Mall, Westport, Mayo
  • Quickshop (delicatessen) (closed area: deli hot food bar), Castleredmond Place, St Mary’s Road, Midleton, Cork
  • Lotus Take-Away, 8 Clare Street, Limerick
  • China Link (take-away), Main Street, Kiltimagh, Mayo
  • The Shamrock Bar (restaurant) (closed area: kitchen), Market Square, Dunmanway, Cork

Four prohibition orders was served under the FSAI Act, 1998 on:

  • Tom Whelan (cold store), Stormy Downs, Windsor Hill, Glounthaune, Co. Cork
  • M White & Sons (butcher), Unit 2 Longwalk Shopping Centre, Dundalk, Louth
  • Slovakpoint (grocery), 5 Lavitt’s Quay, Cork
  • Moldova (supermarket), Coolmine Industrial Estate, Dublin 15

Two prohibition orders was served under the EC (Official Control of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010 on:

  • Aisling Foundation (food supplements supplier), Unit 4B Enterprise Centre, Bantry, Cork

Prosecutions

Four successful prosecutions were also taken by the Health Service Executive on:

  • Smak Wholesalers Limited, Unit 9 Primside Park, Northwest Business Park, Ballycoolin, Dublin 15
  • Alex Kavaliov (employee of Smak Wholesalers Limited), Unit 9 Primside Park, Northwest Business Park, Ballycoolin, Dublin 15
  • Mizzoni Pizza (take away), 24 Church Street, Castleisland, Kerry
  • Regency Hotel, Swords Road, Whitehall, Dublin 9

Professor Alan Reilly, Chief Executive, FSAI expressed his concern at the high level of non-compliance with food safety regulations, saying it is “extremely disappointing” that the number of orders served was so high in October.

Orders were served on a wide variety of food businesses, in the manufacturing, distribution, retail and catering sectors.  The inspectors found illegal, unhygienic or unsafe foods, with significant breaches of food safety legislation that put people’s health at serious risk.  There’s absolutely no justification for negligence in this area.

He said the legal onus is on food businesses to act responsibly and ensure that the food they serve and sell is safe for consumption.

Cutting your spending on food safety practices can be an expensive mistake, resulting in closure of your business or significant court fines.  Together with the inspectorate, we will not hold back in taking swift action against any food business that fails to meet their legal obligations in this area.

If any food business operator is unsure of what is required of them by law, they can contact the FSAI advice line on 1890 336677 or visit its website www.fsai.ie or facebook page.

@Mark: Playdates were never ok. Heard a top child and family psychologist on the radio a few weeks ago speaking about how they’re needless and normally only an excuse for parents to get together to gossip about other parents! Children get plenty social interaction at creche, preschool, school or even at home with their families!!

@Sorcha Ní Shúilleabháin: how old are your children?? Because if u had children in junior infants and third class ud know they always ask for play dates, top psychologist? Please name? Because play dates I feel builds there self esteem and gives them cultural or social differental experiences.

@Angel Drake: I’m patently aware of the needs of school-aged children and of the myriad of research that overwhelmingly indicates that play dates are not necessary for social development. Informal play with siblings etc. and interaction in school-based settings is far more valuable than the kind of contrived and overly structured situations that parents conjure up.

Kids can catch it and kids can spread it.
Please everyone, just for a few weeks, assume you have the virus and act like you don’t want to spread it.
We all need to work together here !

Look people it’s 2 weeks, with your children….relax! It’s good for kids to be bored. I have friends who grew up in rural Ireland in the 80s, who wouldn’t see anyone outside their family for 2 or 3 weeks over the summer.
I have muted my kids classes WhatsApp groups, I am so annoyed at the parents talking with such dread of being at home with their own children in their own house. I’d rather my kids at home than visiting them in icu. Myself and himself are trying to do working from
    Home in shifts.
Also I hate play dates with a passion, I wish for the days that kids knocked on the door to play!
Deal with it, it’s a few weeks!

@Bleurgh: There is absolutely no way this is just a 2 week closure. The governments plan is to try delay the peak of infection until late spring/early summer when the usual winter type ailments all but die out, thus leaving the health services under a little less pressure and better able to focus on this particular virus. Even the governments experts are saying our peak is at least weeks away, if not months, so how would it make any sense to reopen schools when the situation is going to be worse on the 29th March than it is now ? Ive no doubt the closure will be extended until after the easter break, and if at that point the number of infections are still rising then anything is possible. Wouldn’t be one bit surprised if the closures run up to the summer holidays and schools dont reopen until next Sept.

Regardless whether it is 2 weeks or 2 months to mind your own children, it would be a great opportunity to teach them not to be selfish a**holes in hoarding as their adult counterparts and learn how to look after the more vulnerable in society
