Smoke across the city as firefighters respond to gorse fire in Dublin Mountains

The smoke has now spread as far as Lucan.

DUBLIN FIREFIGHTERS ARE on the scene fighting a fire in the in the Dublin Mountains near Glencullen.

The Dublin Fire Brigade responded to a gorse Fire last night.

Two fire engines remained on scene overnight, as firefighters from Rathfarnham and Dun Laoghaire Fire station responded to the flames.

The smoke has now spread as far as Lucan due to an easterly wind, and if in an affected area the Fire Brigade recommends closing windows and doors.

Dublin City Council Deputy Lord Mayor Donna Cooney, told The Journal she’s concerned for the wildlife, air pollution and would like to see an investigation to prevent future wildfires.

“The local authority has to have the manpower and the resources to be able to tackle these, Because preventative is obviously best. And then if it does happen, we can deal with them as quickly as possible,” she added.

Paul Murphy, People Before Profit TD, said on X (formerly Twitter) a number of factors are resulting in more of these fires in recent years. He added that his party would push for more preventative measures before the drier summer months.

Back in the day, farmers would burn gorse in order to provide more grass for their sheep, but as there are no sheep on the mountains nowadays, it must be arson!

@Mr “JonnieBoy” Johnson: Arson is the crime of deliberately setting fire to properties, which I assume farmland would come under. I don’t understand your reference to eating grass!

@Brian Hunt: when the gorse was burned new grass shoots would appear in the black ashes of the burned gorse. This new grass provided food for sheep, hence the reference to “eating grass”.

North of Ireland can burn until April 15, here 1st march, which is why if there is any chance to do it, ends up a crazy dash to get it done by deadline, causing unnecessary damage, controlled burns and not wilding reduces risk of wildfires, let farmers have more time in dry weather like our neighbours, also would love to see more native cattle back on hills all year, proven they are better than just sheep on the ground, biodiversity wise.

Bloody Teslas. Bursting into flamese everywhere. Worse than a Crown Paints factory. On a more serious note, good luck to the firefighters and hope nobody gets hurt.

There was a serious gorse fire in West Cork last night, no mention of it, but because it’s Dublin and the poor old Dubs might smell a bit of smoke, it makes the Journal headlines, no wonder they think there’s no life outside the M50.
