Trump moves to overhaul US elections, fueling fears voting will become more difficult

Trump wants to set down a requirement for documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote.

DONALD TRUMP HAS signed a sweeping executive action to overhaul elections in the United States, including requiring documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in national elections and demanding that all ballots be received by election day.

The US president’s order says the US has failed “to enforce basic and necessary election protections” and calls on states to work with federal agencies to share voter lists and prosecute election crimes.

It threatens to pull federal funding from states where election officials who do not comply.

The move is likely to face swift challenges from voting rights organisations who fear it will block many from voting.

But it is consistent with Trump’s long history of railing against election processes. He has often claimed elections are being rigged, even before the results are known, and has waged battles against certain voting methods since he lost the 2020 election to Democrat Joe Biden and falsely blamed it on widespread fraud.

Trump has focused particularly on mail voting, arguing without evidence that it is insecure and invites fraud even as he has shifted his position on the issue given its popularity with voters, including Republicans.

While fraud occurs, it is rare, limited in scope and gets prosecuted.

After signing, Trump said that more election actions would be taken in coming weeks.

Sad, as Irish film making needs as many outlets as it can get. More films seem to be getting made as production costs are getting lower. Its a valuable craft that needs exposure.

Very sad to hear this. It is such a highly regarded festival. What a loss for our young Irish animators in particular , as this was such an important international platform to launch their work. The Festival also engaged with primary schools, where children got to vote on the Best Animation category and even visit the festival. Maurice Galway and his team are highly regarded ambassadors and promoters of Irish talent and young international newbies. What a stingy mistake.
