Rescue efforts hampered in Myanmar as death toll passes 1,700

Buckled roads, downed bridges, and an ongoing civil war have all played a role.

THE DEATH TOLL from the earthquake which hit Myanmar has risen to more than 1,700 as more bodies have been pulled from the rubble, according to the country’s military-led government.

Relief efforts have been hampered by buckled roads, downed bridges, spotty communications and the challenges of operating in a country engaged in a civil war.

Government spokesperson Major General Zaw Min Tun told state-run broadcaster MRTV that another 3,400 have been injured and more than 300 were missing.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit at midday on Friday, causing widespread damage, including in the capital Naypitaw and the second largest city, Mandalay.

The earthquake, whose epicentre was near Mandalay, brought down scores of buildings and damaged other infrastructure like the city’s airport.

In neighbouring Thailand, the earthquake rocked much of the country and killed at least 18 people, many at a construction site in Bangkok where a partially built high-rise collapsed.

Yeah Journal, why leave out the six counties? Here’s me thinking you are an advanced and progressive media outlet – don’t tell me you are just like all the rest – stuffy old partitionists.

First off its a different jurisdiction weather you like it or not. Secondly, politics in Northern Ireland never concentrate on economic or social issues. It will be a contest between DUP and SinnFéin with a slight chance of UUP or SDLP taking the third seat otherwise we can already predict the result.; DUP 2 – Sinn Féin 1.

You are the “arsehole”. The six counties is NOT “a whole different place” as you say – to be “dumped and forgotten”.(AGAIN)

It is still Ireland, and always was, and what happens there is very important to any Irishman with a backbone.

Damien , you have the DUP doing better than they expect . You reckon the DUP will win two seats which will be a very good result for them as they have only one candidate standing .

When you don’t know what you are posting about , it’s better to not post.

It is a different jurisdiction and whilst some in the South refuse to admit it, a different country. That there is a large minority there who would like union with the rest of the island does not change the simple fact that the majority see themselves as British or Northern Irish and not Irish. Some are comfortable with considering themselves Irish and British. Those who see themselves as exclusively Irish are a minority. All over Europe there are places which were once part of somewhere else, but history and migration have changed them. Northern Ireland is not any different. Whether partition should have happened (I think personally it wasn’t a great idea) is a mute point as it did happen and the consequent state has existed for 92 years. We need to grow up as a people and accept that NI exists and that it will continue to exist. Similar to Hungarians in the Transylvanian region of Romania or the Germans of Südtirol, the Irish of Northern Ireland need to get on with and accept the state as it is. This continued pursuit of a fantasy union with the South is a recipe for mistrust and political paralysis in their own state. They should be always welcome in the South as equal citizens, but in the North, they need to get on with being citizens of Northern Ireland and make the best of it.

That is why we shouldn’t treat this as an all Ireland election. It isn’t. It is an all-European parliament election and there are local elections in both of these two countries on this island.

So Journal your app covers the European election candidates well but not the locals. Your article is misleading in this regard. For most the locals are more of a concern as local authorities will have some control over property taxes and the day to day running of our localities. Finish the job and the praise will follow!! #HALFDONE.

    Hi Charlie,
I realise that we don’t have profiles for every candidate in the locals – unfortunately we just didn’t have the man/woman power to interview every one of those in the same way as we did the Euro candidates as there are literally thousands of local candidates!
However, we do have a special section for local election news stories and will keep you up to date also this coming weekend on the number of seats being won in each constituency on a party/independent/whatever you’re having yourself basis and point you to individual candidate win lists where possible.
Thanks for the input, Cheers, Susan, Editor, TheJournal.ie
