Mobile phone use while driving Alamy Stock Photo

Hauliers warn they are witnessing an 'epidemic' of mobile phone use on the roads

Speeding, tailgating and dangerous overtaking are widespread, the hauliers have warned.

ROAD HAULIERS HAVE warned of a “epidemic” of mobile phone use at the wheel, visible to truck drivers from the vantage point of their cabs.

The Irish Road Haulage Association association has also warned of tailgating, dangerous overtaking on country roads and people not knowing how to behave on roundabouts.

Ger Hyland, president of the association, said there is insufficient garda enforcement of mobile phone use by drivers.

He said driver standards are at an “all-time low”, with speeding and mobile phone use particularly prevalent among drivers. Hyland said hauliers can see people texting and browsing social media while driving from their position in their cabs. Hauliers are in a unique position with their “birds eye view” perspective of the road, he explained.

Mobile phone use “is an epidemic that is causing accidents and road deaths and there doesn’t seem to be any consistent garda enforcement to stamp it out.”

Hyland said he has heard accusations of hauliers themselves using their phones while driving, adding that he would not defend any haulier engaging in this “bad behaviour”.

Hyland also expressed concern at the condition of some country roads. Poor road infrastructure and areas with “accident black spots” need to be improved, he said. He also suggested increased driver education may be needed.

“The road is our workplace,” Hyland said. “Road safety is everybody’s responsibility.”

As of this morning, 42 people had lost their lives on the roads so far this year, down from 55 last year. In 2024, there were over 170 deaths on Irish roads.

Road deaths increased in the years after the pandemic, a trend that seems to have been driven by a deterioration in driver behaviour.

Garda road policing has increased to tackle the deadly trend, with uniform officers required to do 30 minutes road policing per shift since last year. Gardaí have also been using an unmarked truck to catch people breaking the law, such as by using their phones at the wheel or not wearing a seatbelt.

Research presented to the government and gardaí last year concluded Irish drivers estimate the risk of being caught using the phone at the wheel at “close to zero”.

@ben wu: Yesterday out in Sandyford area white van driver on their phone for about 2km stretch while shuffling through papers on the seat beside him.

This morning on the M4 there was easily 10 or so on their phone, easily visible.

I didn’t see a single garda car on patrol yesterday while driving from St Vincents Hospital out to Meath area – nor did I see any coming onto M4 all the way to Blanchardstown – no Garda presence.

Can’t they just make mobile phones what they were originally made for, calling or texting, all cars have Bluetooth or voice messaging, or Can they not block entertainment apps on phones like YouTube or tiktok etc when the car is moving. I’ve had a few close shaves with a car momentarily drifting across the centre line on a narrow main road. If you double the traffic garda it won’t change anything just look at the number of people still drink driving. I think what would work is if you’re caught drink driving or with a phone in your hand or watching a video while driving, a ban for life that would make them sit up and think, and give a years warning through the media everyday 365 days brainwashing because the media are good at that anyway.

It really is a disgrace. More disgraceful is the fact that it is allowed to continue.

This dangerous practice can and MUST be stamped out. It is more dangerous than drink and/or drug driving.

Using a mobile device while operating any vehicle on the public roads should result in a mandatory, automatic, immediate driving ban for a minimum of three months on the first offence, rising sharply with further offences. The vehicle should be seized and not returned until the ban expires.

There is no need at all to use a mobile device while driving. Catch up with texts, calls, posts etc. when safely parked up. No excuses.

Totally and utterly irresponsible and selfish and dangerous behaviour that should not be tolerated by anyone.

    Ban it now!

Driving behaviour will not change until a dedicated traffic police force is put in place to monitor roads.

I’m sure the tickets and confiscation of vehicles could easily fund the force. Further, it would take poor drivers off the roads and cause more people to reassess their driving force.

An easy solution to correct road behaviour problems.

My car is 14 years old, and as soon as I start the engine, the Bluetooth kicks in. My phone is in a bag or pocket, and if it rings, then I’ll answer it from a button on the steering wheel….. or it can be set to be automatically answered. You’re supposed to be prosecuted if the phone is visible on the passenger seat or in your hand …. of course that would take a guard to actually notice

The standard of driving is in the gutter. You would know there’s a minimum requirement of 10 lessons( I think at least this). This spans all drivers, but the standout ones that regularly demonstrate poor driving are those with N plates. When it comes to phone usage, there should be signal blocking in cars without hands free equipment. Perhaps this should be an NCT requirement.

Truck drivers are just as guilty as other drivers. And more and more truck drivers are driving in an aggressive manner using their vehicle size to intimidate!!

Increase the fines to €300 and 4 points. And if the car the person was using comes equipped with a hands free kit then double the fine and penalty points. Drivers will soon cop themselves on and use the equipment already in their cars.

I was on a bus for a two hour journey on Friday and seen so many lorry drivers on the phone while driving. Don’t hear of too many lorry crashes in fairness

@Susan O’Neill: might be as lorry drivers have a higher bar to pass in the test. There are less lorries than cars. Lorries are generally not out at between 1 and 5am when a lot of the type of accidents that make the news are happening. On closer inspection there are a number of lorries in accidents. More than any other vehicle…..that I don’t know.

The pot calling the kettle black here for sure. Parked up on a main street in a town on the N20 recently and every and I mean every HGV that passed the driver was on the phone. Start with yourselves before you serve judgment.

@John Flynn: Didn’t judge Nolan just let another one off for nearly killing someone a few weeks back!… ‘wasn’t paying attention your honour’ … same guy currently driving a lorry around Ireland, no problem. Massive over’haul’ of HGV movement on our roads is needed.

We live on a small roundabout in a rural town. The things I have seen and the volume of them would make you seriously worried. Far too many to list. I have asked the gardai on several occasions just to stand at the roundabout in plain clothes and just observe what goes by. It is horrendous what people can do. Still waiting, after several years, to see a Garda. I estimate that 4 out of 10 are on their phones.
