Jaguar Land Rover pauses all US shipments this month in wake of tariffs

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has said that the UK’s response to US tariffs will be ‘guided by the national interest’.

UK LUXURY CAR manufacturer Jaguar Land Rover has said that it will “pause” shipments to the United States this month as it addressed “the new trading terms” created by Washington’s tariffs.

A 25% levy on all foreign cars imported into America came into force on Thursday, and a wider “baseline” 10% tariff on goods imported from around the world kicked in this morning.

The move from the British car firm comes as companies are grappling with the new trade rules, and the fallout on the global stock markets.

In a statement on Saturday, a JLR spokesperson said: “The USA is an important market for JLR’s luxury brands.

“As we work to address the new trading terms with our business partners, we are taking some short-term actions including a shipment pause in April, as we develop our mid- to longer-term plans.”

Trading across the world has been hammered in the aftermath of the president’s tariff announcement at the White House on Wednesday.

The UK’s FTSE 100 plummeted yesterday in its worst day of trading since the start of the pandemic, while markets on Wall Street also tumbled.

All but one stock on the FTSE 100 fell on Friday – with Rolls-Royce, banks and miners among those to suffer the sharpest losses.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is expected to spend the weekend taking calls from foreign leaders about the tariffs after discussions with the prime ministers of Australia and Italy on Friday in which the leaders agreed that a trade war would be “extremely damaging”.

In a statement, a Downing Street spokesperson said the leaders “all agreed that an all-out trade war would be extremely damaging”.

The spokesperson added that Starmer “has been clear the UK’s response will be guided by the national interest” and officials will “calmly continue with our preparatory work, rather than rush to retaliate”.

“He discussed this approach with both leaders, acknowledging that while the global economic landscape has shifted this week, it has been clear for a long time that like-minded countries must maintain strong relationships and dialogue to ensure our mutual security and maintain economic stability,” the spokesperson said.

Beijing said it would respond with its own 34% tariff on imports of all US products from April 10.

Here, Taoiseach Micheál Martin said that the European response should be “considered and measured and the action should be proportionate, aimed at defending the interests of our businesses and citizens”, amid calls from several nations to impose reciprocal tariffs on US imports.

@Eoghan O Sullivan: It is shocking and desperately sad, beyond words to express it.
But, what do people in Gaza expect when the actions of the people running the place are designed to provoke exactly what is happening.
They turned away from the limited autonomy that they were granted and all to pursue an impossible goal of wiping out the Jews. That’s so sad. They could have built on the freedom they had instead of brainwashing their own people with hatred from the cradle to the grave.- it might have taken a few generations, but time and demographics would be on their side. It would have to be better than the misery they have drawn on their people.

@Ger Whelan: the government of Israel are guilty of war crimes, same as the government of Gaza. Israel is going nowhere so unless the people of Gaza get rid of Hamas then there will be no hope as the only aim of Hamas is to attack and wipe out Israel. The only hope the people of Gaza have is to have the PA take over the running of it, rather than Iran via Hamas

@Thomas Sheridan: There’s some truth in what you’re saying, insofar as people entrenched in conflicts like this are stuck in a cycle of violence. However, there are two factions of extremists in this. The Isreali government are led by far right supremacists, like Ben Givr and Smotrich, who follow the doctrine of Kahnism. It’s every bit as repulsive in its aims as Hamas and their aims. And let’s not forget Benni the butcher. A man who led a march, headed by a coffin with the name of then Isreali PM Rabin on it.. spoke how he was a traitor for signing the Oslo Accord, which saw him assinated. Not to mention, Hamas is a creation of the Israeli government. You seem willfully ignorant of these facts. This government is guilty of the most heinous war crimes, stop excusing them.. no more “But”.

@Eoghan O Sullivan: Back with the usual nonsense I see. I couldn’t care less what happened to those “medics” because at least two of them took part in the massacre in Kibbutz Nir Oz on October 7th according to the identification of the bodies that were discovered. Hamas has infiltrated and runs the Red Crescent in Gaza just like every other part of the bureaucracy within the enclave. There needs to be a full investigation into the identities of all of the “medics” because they chose not to coordinate their movements with the IDF patrols within the area. If you don’t do that, you run the risk of getting shot at because this is a conflict zone and soldiers don’t have time to second guess. I stand by my claim that Israel has not committed any war crimes in Gaza because they simply haven’t.

@William Jennings: Are you some sort of bot or AI generated account? No human or even the Israelis themselves have come out with that sort of twisted logic regarding this incident.
So according to YOU, 2 of them were hamas? Even if that was correct, then that justifies the murder and cover up of the other 13?
Did they “know” beforehand that there were 2 hamas in the convoy and just carried on with their “shoot to kill anything that moves policy” anyway?
With the banning of the worlds media we’ll never know the true extent of Israeli war crimes. This is just the tip of the iceberg where they happened to be caught out.
And just as a note, the convoy was not in an Israeli evacuation zone. An evacuation zone announcement of the area was announced an hour after the incident.
And you call for an investigation in to the identities of the medics, but not in to the israeli soldiers or commanders who carried out these war crimes – how typical. of you.
MSF, UN, World Central Kitchens and many other agencies have had their people killed in recent weeks. But William couldn’t care less what happened to them (or the people of Gaza/West Bank). Embarrassing is an understatement.

@Eugene Burns: I’d ask you the same question Eugene since you continually regurgitate Hamas propaganda. Why didn’t the “medics” coordinate their movements with the IDF patrol in the area? It makes no sense unless you had something to hide. We know that two of the medics were members of Hamas because they recorded themselves on GoPro cameras massacring people and burning buildings in Kibbutz Nir Oz. As I said above, this is a conflict zone. The IDF has to deal with the fact that Hamas dresses up in civilian clothing before initiating surprise attacks on soldiers. If you choose to move in the nighttime without prior warning and suddenly drive towards an IDF patrol, you run the risk of getting shot. If journalists have been banned, how is Al-Jazeera able to report from inside of Gaza then?

@William Jennings: I see that you didn’t provide any sources for your claims. In the meantime even the IDF have admitted that they’re initial version of the story was incorrect. The vehicles were clearly marked and used lights and flashing lights. Even if two of the killed medics did have Hamas connectin, of which you have provided no evidence, it doesn’t justify the attack on ambulances. The Geneva convention is clear. Ambulances must not be attacked. There might be an exception when ambulances engage in acts of war, however that was not the case here. This was murder for the sake of it. A war crime by some trigger happy ISF soldiers. Zero evidence that these medics were hostile or a posing a threat. Defending this war crime is disgusting.

@Eugene Burns: Why would Israel let in a media organisation that is funded by Qatar and has ties to the Muslim Brotherhood? Maybe because they aren’t actually stopping journalists from reporting and this is just more propagandistic nonsense. You bring up World Central Kitchen, so let’s talk about that. The convoy of trucks were ordered no to leave by the IDF in the nighttime because the cover of darkness would stop their drones from identifying the trucks. The WCK convoy ignored this and left at 11pm to move their supplies. The IDF offered to issue WCK with IR strobe patterns which would allow their drones to pick up and identify whether the trucks were carrying aid or were carrying weapons for Hamas. WCK declined this as well and the drones had no choice but to strike suspicious trucks.

@Dereck: I have. They literally filmed themselves on GoPro cameras massacring people in Kibbutz Nir Oz! What’s so hard about that to understand? By choosing to put known members of Hamas in their ambulances, they opened themselves up to being attacked. The Geneva Convention is clear that if the ambulance is being used for non-medical purposes, such as transporting combatants to engage in military action, it loses this protection and can be targeted. None of this would have happened if this was a fair war where Hamas didn’t use civilian infrastructure and vehicles as shields of immunity but we know this is clearly not the case. Once again, the ambulances did not coordinate their movements with the IDF patrol in the area. Why wouldn’t you do that unless you had something to hide?

@William Jennings: You did not provide any evidence. What you did is, you claimed that there is a video out there. That’s not evidence. Regarding the Geneva convention: You are misquoting it. For an ambulance to loose its protection it must be clearly identified as being misused. That was not the case. The key wording is “clear and intentional misuse”. Not even the IDF are claiming that’s the case here. That the ambulance may have operated without prior coordination with the IDF does not give them the right to shoot without warning. There are reports out there that some of the killed medics were found with their hands tied behind their backs. If that turns out to be true will you still claim that there was no war crime committed here?

@Dereck: You can literally look up and watch the videos of Hamas breaking into Kibbutz Nir Oz and massacring hundreds of innocent people. Hamas posted the videos themselves. The IDF told the vehicle to stop and they didn’t. They also didn’t coordinate their movements with the IDF as I told you above. This is a recipe for disaster, plain and simple. Even if we go off your statement that the IDF shot at the ambulances without knowing that Hamas had taken control of them, we still know that they had identified and were tracking the movements of those two terrorists earlier in the day and had found out that they boarded the ambulances. How could you possibly expect the IDF to know whether they were full of other armed Hamas militants or not? The safety of their soldiers will always come first.

@William Jennings: When you claim that two of the killed medics were involved in the attack on the Kibuz it’s up to you to provide evidence. Not up to me to search for it. Article 35 Geneva convention states that ambiguities, regarding whether an ambulance is used for military purposes, should be resolved cautiously to avoid indiscriminate attacks on protected medical vehicles.
In this case it turned out that the ambulance wasn’t used for military purposes. There are also discrepancies between the names of the victims as reported by the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) and those released by the Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS). So there’s even reason to believe that the IDF acted on incorrect information or that they just made up the story about having tracked terrorists to the ambulance.

But an ever changing story by the IDF as soon as hey’re caught lying. Also UN reports of victims in mass graves with their hands tied behind their backs. So far a lot points towards either a big c.ck up by the IDF that they’re trying to cover up or some trigger happy soldiers who shoot at ambulances for a laugh. And some people actually defend this. Trump’s move to increase tariffs on all foreign cars will have the exact opposite effect that he wants it to have. The higher tariff does not just affect Jaguar Land Rover, it also means American employees who depend on imports for parts will face higher input costs. That means domestic car manufacturers will have to pay more for components they rely on from abroad. These higher input costs trickle down to higher prices for American-made cars as well. Jobs are not being “protected”, Trump is raising the cost of doing business across the board. Auto workers, truckers, logistics companies and retailers will all feel the effects of this tariff in the form of higher costs and fewer jobs. This doesn’t just affect high-end cars like Jaguars and Land Rovers, it impacts the entire auto industry.
