Israeli military chief orders deeper probe into attack on Gaza ambulances

German foreign ministry spokesman Christian Wagner said there are “significant questions” about the actions of the IDF in the attack.

LAST UPDATE | 7 Apr

THE PALESTINIAN RED Crescent ambulance service has urged for international investigations into an incident where Israeli forces fired on a convoy of ambulances, killing 15 aid workers, at the end of last month.

The 15 medics and humanitarian workers were killed in Gaza last month after shots were fired at their ambulances by Israeli forces, sparking international condemnation. The Israeli military initially denied the claims, insisting they fired on “terrorists”.

But footage released by the Palestinian Red Crescent on Saturday contradicted the Israeli military’s initial claims, showing ambulances travelling with their headlights on and emergency lights flashing.

The head of the Israeli military has now called for deeper investigations to take place into the incident after the German government echoed the Red Crescent’s calls for thorough probes to take place.

“An investigation and accountability of the perpetrators are urgently needed,” a spokesperson said.

The six minute, 42 second video was recovered from the cellphone of one of the aid workers killed, according to the Red Crescent.

Wagner said the accusations against the Israeli military were “shocking” and “really terrible” and “urgently need to be cleared up”.

Fully investigating the incident will be “a question that ultimately affects the credibility of the Israeli constitutional state”, he said.

Reporter killed in strikes

Last night, Israel struck tents outside two major hospitals in the Gaza Strip overnight, killing at least two people, including a local reporter, and injuring another nine, according to medics.

Six reporters were among the injured in the attacks in Khan Younis.

Another 15 people were killed in separate strikes across the territory, according to hospital chiefs.

A strike on a media tent outside Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis at around 2am local time set the tent ablaze, killing Yousef al-Faqawi, a reporter for the Palestine Today TV station, and another man, according to the hospital.

The Israeli military claimed it struck a Hamas militant.

Israel also struck tents on the edge of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the central city of Deir al-Balah, injuring three people, according to the hospital.

Nasser Hospital said it received another 13 bodies, including six women and four children, from separate strikes overnight. Al-Aqsa Hospital said two people were killed and three injured in a strike on a home in Deir al-Balah.

Israel has carried out waves of strikes across Gaza and ground forces have carved out new military zones since it ended its ceasefire with Hamas last month.

Israel has barred the import of food, fuel, medicine and humanitarian aid since the beginning of March.

Thousands of people have sheltered in tents set up inside hospital compounds throughout the 18-month war in hope that Israel might be less likely to target them, but Israel has raided hospitals on several occasions, accusing Hamas of using them for military purposes — allegations denied by hospital staff.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is due to meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington DC today to discuss Gaza and other issues.

Israel’s war on Gaza has killed over 50,000 Palestinians since October 2023, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s health ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were militants or civilians.

Israel says it has killed around 20,000 militants, without providing evidence.

The offensive has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and at its height displaced around 90% of its population.
