Garda road policing chief says bigger cars do more damage in crashes

Drivers are urged to slow down this Bank Holiday weekend.

THE HEAD OF the gardaí’s road policing unit has urged drivers of heavier cars such as SUVs to take care as these large vehicles do more damage in crashes.

Earlier this week, a Dublin TD called for SUV-free zones to be established in urban areas across Ireland, after a major study revealed that children are 82% more likely to be killed if hit by one than by a regular car.

A British study found that pedestrians and cyclists are 44% more likely to die if they are hit by an SUV or similar-sized vehicle rather than by a traditional car – and that figure rises to 82% for children.

Jane Humphries, Chief Superintendent of the Garda Roads Policing unit, said SUVs are more dangerous because of “simple physics”.

“The force that you are hit with is literally the weight of the vehicle times the acceleration,” Humphries told reporters.

“That means that the faster you’re going, the more damage you’re going to do, and the heavier the car is, the more damage you’re going to do.”

Paul Murphy, a People Before Profit TD for Dublin South-West, described the statistics from the UK study as “alarming” and said SUVs are not built for busy city environments.

Research shows that the higher front ends of SUVs strike adults in the pelvis and children in the head, increasing the risk of severe injury.

Humphries added that it’s “up to the local authorities” whether or not they bring SUV-related regulations in.

Weekend road warning

Gardaí, along with the Road Safety Authority (RSA) urged the public to be particularly careful when driving over the bank holiday weekend – including by not drinking and driving and by keeping mobile phones out of reach while on the road.

Gardaí have said that they will step up roadside enforcement this weekend, with a significant number of drink and drug testing checkpoints, speed cameras and unmarked garda vehicles to be rolled out over the coming days.

The appeal to drivers comes just two weeks after the previous bank holiday weekend over Easter, when three people died on Irish roads and 12 more were seriously injured.

During the same period, 149 people were arrested for drink and drug driving.

Asked whether further fatalities were expected, Humphries said that she “doesn’t like forecasting”.

“Behind every fatality there is a family that has been absolutely ripped apart by what has happened, and their lives will never, ever be the same again,” Humphries said.

I have seen very few fatal and serious collisions which were inevitable. These are preventable.

“We know what causes collisions, and it’s everybody’s responsible to change the driving behaviour and everybody to work together to bring those numbers down,” she added.

Sarah O’Connor of the RSA said that the May bank holiday will bring heavy traffic on the roads and additional risk.

She called on people to slow down, never drive while tired or distracted by their phone, and to always wear a seatbelt.

Advice for swimmers

In a separate warning ahead of the May bank holiday, Water Safety Ireland, the Coast Guard, and the RNLI urged the public to prioritise safety on or near water, including by wearing lifejackets on boats and always informing someone of travel plans.

The water safety groups also urged those planning to swim, surf or sail to check the weather and tides before taking part in water-based activities.

Linda-Gene Byrne of the RNLI said one in three people “don’t know what to do” if they get into trouble in the water.

“The RNLI is reminding everyone to remember ‘float to live’ if they find themselves in trouble in water: tilt your head back with ears submerged and try to relax and control your breathing,” Byrne said.

“Use your hands to help you stay afloat and then, once you are through the initial shock, call for help or swim to safety if you can.”

So let me get this straight SUVs are now the boogeymen of the roads? Forget careless crossing, dodgy bikes with no lights, or the fella on his phone wandering into traffic like he’s in a Marvel film nah, it’s the car’s fault for being big and safe. Right.

I drive an SUV with more sensors than a NASA launchpad. It brakes if a pigeon sneezes near it. But I still get the death-stare from teens who dilly-dally across the road like they’re on a catwalk earbuds in, eyes glued to TikTok, not a care in the world. God forbid I beep to warn them then I’m the villain in a Fast & Furious spin-off.

Whatever happened to “Stop, Look and Listen”? Green Cross Code? Basic survival instincts? We’ve gone from teaching kids road safety to teaching drivers mind-reading. “He’s 12 and bouncing a ball into the street, you should’ve predicted that and slammed on the brakes, you monster!”

Yes, physics says heavy cars cause more damage. You know what else causes damage? Wandering into moving traffic like it’s a pedestrian parade. Maybe we stop blaming the car and start having honest chats about shared responsibility. Equal roads, equal rules.

I literally had a kid doing a wheelie down the bike lane yesterday fall off his bike in front of me and jammed on, my fault, I know. Anyway, I’ll be off now, trying to dodge flying scooters and kids doing kickflips into junctions at 2km/h, with every sensor beeping. Pray for me.

@Nick Vasilakis: Ah, the classic “tank” dig, original as ever.

It’s fully electric, packed with safety features, and gives me a proper view of the road which, judging by the occasional pedestrian gymnastics out there, is no bad thing.

I drive what suits my life, not someone else’s opinion. One very large dog, long journeys, proper boot space it works for me. In fact, it’s the best thing I’ve ever bought. Can’t believe it took me so long to move up to an SUV, let alone go fully electric.

I’m 46, never had a crash, never knocked anyone down, not even a near miss. I’ve cycled, walked, ridden motorbikes, driven cars and bigger cars, and the one thing I always took seriously? The rules of the road. From Green Cross Code as a kid, to primary school/secondary school cycling lessons, to upgrading motorbike sizes and finally cars as I got older, it’s called experience.

Blanket judgment on vehicle types isn’t activism, it’s just lazy pub talk.

If we’re serious about safety, we should be talking about behaviour not what’s parked in someone else’s driveway.

@Rafa C: Don’t recall a pedestrian ever killing someone in a collision with a car…The fact you feel nice and safe as you cruise around in your tank is great. But like it or not, statistically you are more likely to kill someone in it. More likely than someone in standard size car, and infinitely more likely than a pedestrian is going to cause damage to you. It sounds like you are a safe driver so kudos. But there is not much point in trying to deny facts, larger vehicles protect their drivers, but are more dangerous to others. Telling everyone else to effectively stay out of your way is not the most productive, when it is you who are driving the weapon

Honestly though, it’s wild how saying “maybe everyone should watch where they’re going” gets treated like heresy. I’ll keep driving my space-age ‘tank’, dodging TikTok zombies, rogue wheelies and kamikaze scooters, and hoping common sense makes a comeback.

Cheers again, it’s nice to know someone still enjoys a bit of common sense with their satire.

@James: Appreciate the measured tone, seriously. You’re right on one thing bigger vehicles carry more kinetic risk, physics isn’t up for debate. But neither is the fact that an SUV doesn’t operate itself. It’s not a sentient battering ram. Blame the driver, not the shape of the car.

The real issue is how people behave behind the wheel and on foot. I’ve seen more close calls caused by distraction, arrogance, and sheer obliviousness than by any specific type of vehicle. And no one’s denying risk, but the idea that safety begins and ends with the shape of my car is just flawed logic.

I’m not “telling people to stay out of my way” I’m telling everyone to stay switched on. Roads are shared spaces, not catwalks or racetracks, and if we all behaved like they were, the stats would look a hell of a lot better.

You want to talk about facts? Let’s talk about all of them, not just the ones that suit a tidy narrative.

@James: you can kill someone with a bike or an ebike or a scooter. If some need and chooses a suv , so be it. It’s the person that does the damage not the vehicle, its just like guns, dont blame the gun its the person pulling the trigger. Hit by a 1.5 ton car or a 3 ton suv, neither has a good ending. Vigilance by all , and drivers knowing a vehicle is a weapon if not treated with respect.

@Rafa C: Driver, cyclist and pedestrian behaviour is obviously an important factor in road safety, I agree. But here’s the thing, the issue isn’t just behaviour, it’s outcomes. The consequences of a mistake differ drastically based on what hits them. Statistically.

Saying “people should be more careful” doesn’t change the fact that SUVs are 82% more likely to kill a child in a collision. That’s not about blame – it’s about risk. Vehicle design impacts public safety.

And to be honest the equal roads, equal rules argument isn’t the best equivalence. There’s a big difference between a multi-tonne vehicle travelling at speed and a cyclist or pedestrian. Urban streets aren’t motorways, they’re places were life unfolds, where neighbours interact, were kids play and walk to school etc

@ben quinn: As you say, it’s in the statistics.
I agree with Rafa on a lot of their points regarding safety, education and awareness, but the statistics are both clear and obvious.
There was an sponsored article here a few days ago regarding the best 7 seater SUV, and I tend to wonder how many they buy those actually need them, since family sizes are much down since just moved from cars, and how many are just bought as either status symbols or just the ‘look down on people’ aspect.

@ben quinn: You make a fair point outcomes do matter more than intent. A multi-tonne vehicle doesn’t get a free pass just because the driver meant well. But let’s not flatten the whole picture to one dimension.

True, SUVs are statistically more likely to cause death in a collision but so are buses, trucks, vans, and pretty much anything with size and mass. That’s physics, not villainy.

But collisions don’t happen in a vacuum. Kids walking into traffic glued to their screens, cyclists weaving through red lights with headphones in, adults more focused on their phones than their surroundings that’s not rare anymore, it’s daily life.

We now have pedestrian traffic lights that shine onto the ground – that’s where we are as a society – just to keep pedestrians alive. That’s not progress that’s a flashing indictment of how badly we’ve designed shared spaces.

The real problem isn’t just the size of vehicles it’s the shape of our cities. We’ve built roads that prioritise flow over community, and now we’re surprised when they become dangerous.

Blaming the car is easy. Rebuilding a system that actually protects vulnerable road users? That takes real will.

@ben wu: Well we needed a new car, ours was worth about 3k and it was costing about 500 quid every couple of months in and out of the garage. I test drove every car imaginable, SUVs, saloons, teslas, hatchbacks, in the end every new car was roughly the same price. So we honed in on EVs. As felt it suited us better.

Test drove them all – no lie, polestar, toyota, tesla, hyuandai, ford etc.

Then it came what range we wanted, and settled for 500-600 range suited our lifestyle.

Next it was aesthetics, a lot of EVs look like they’re cut out of cardboard, ugly angles. In the end the BZ4X won over, it was very nice to drive, had the space for the dog and the same price – cheaper than most.

In the end it gets 405km per charge, but more than enough for us.

@Rafa C: I completely agree that urban design is key to this – cars dominate because we’ve built streets for them not people. But the design of individual vehicles matters too, especially when the risks they pose to others are so disproportionate.
I don’t think comparing SUVs to buses and trucks is a fair comparison. The latter serve essential urban functions; SUVs mostly don’t. They are a lifestyle choice. Yet their rising size and weight have reshaped parking and crash outcomes – with no real benefit to public life.
It’s not blaming the car to recognise that vehicle choices influence city form, behaviour, and safety.
You’re right that fixing the system takes real will. But that starts with not normalising high-risk private vehicles in shared human spaces.
    Especially in urban areas.

Kids will be kids and will lose concentration at the best of times, safe cross code or not, that’s why it’s up to drivers to be more aware and vigilant. Adults are too engrossed in their phones.
I don’t use earbuds whilst i’m walking/cycling as i’m deaf in one ear and I need to be aware even more.
I know how to cross a road/cycle and being a professional driver for a living I’m fully aware of what it’s like to deal with pedestrians, kids and cyclists and other drivers on a daily basis who have no clue of their surroundings.
Simple fact of the matter is, you can’t hear an electric car and they’re heavier than SUV’s, so they’re more dangerous but that’s just my opinion.

Maybe the Chief Super is right. We do need to consider the most vulnerable road users. Might is not always right.

I’ve 2 SUVs, both purchased for safety of passengers, which is my main concern, if someone’s walks in front of a two and a half tonne jeep, then natural selection takes place, survival of the fittest.
If we all go out and buy Micras I can assure you road deaths and serious injuries will double. I’m safe on the road and drive carefully but if some simpleton with the latest Apple Noise cancellation ear phones walks out in front of me without looking surely a larger jeep should be easier spotted too

    @Damien McCarthy:
If you ever hit a pedestrian you will find out that it is you that is in trouble, regardless of how it happens. Pedestrians always have right of way even when they walk out in front of you. You are supposed to be watching out for them always. It may seem unfair if some tool glued to a phone steps out in front of you but that’s the way it is.

@Shane Gallagher: I’d say your wrong Shane, I work hard and can afford them, I spent a lot of time on the road so comfort is important as is safety, I also tow trailers and both myself and my wife work in the business so they get good use, I’m not too worried about you or the Jones family

With still no definition of an SUV, how are the figures when 2.5 ton Teslas hit Pedestrians, what about Vans, Trucks ? Busses, Coaches? Mini Busses, Etc, all higher than an Suv by the way, if we knew the definition of one.The bottom line is in Ireland, there is no roads policing, im 54 , ive had two breathalyser tests in 35yrs, you rarely meet checkpoints, we’ve had E scooter rules enacted and still we see seated scooters, two up scooters, e scooters on paths, e scooters with cargo etc.We need a situation that all mechanised road vehicles from.bikes to busses are insured, hiked premiums for accidents be it bikes, busses, Suvs etc will soon temper and cool stupid driving

65% of road deaths happen on roads that are too small. Our infrastructure is the same as it was some 800 years ago. People by bigger cars out here because bad conditions and at least you might live when there’s a lorry tearing down the booreen. Blame blame blame, zero investment.
