PHOTOS: Enda Kenny lays wreath at Remembrance Day ceremony in Enniskillen

It is the first time the leader of the Republic of Ireland has attended a ceremony in Northern Ireland on Remembrance Sunday.

IN A HISTORIC first, both the Taoiseach and Tánaiste took part in Remembrance Day services in Northern Ireland today.

While Eamon Gilmore travelled to Belfast, Enda Kenny laid a wreath of green laurels in Enniskillen. It was accompanied by a card signed by ‘the Government of Ireland’.

Hundreds of people gathered at the town’s war memorial to remember the 11 people killed in an IRA bomb 25 years ago.

Before laying the wreath, Kenny – who did not wear a poppy – bowed his head for a poignant two minutes’ silence.

BBC reports that the Taoiseach then met with victims’ families and survivors of the ‘Poppy Day bombing’.

Remembrance Day is celebrated across Commonwealth countries to honour their service men and women who have died in 20th- and 21st-century conflicts. It marks the anniversary of the end of hostilities of World War I. About 35,000 Irish men were killed during the Great War.

Kenny’s gesture – which would have seemed impossible just a few years ago – comes 18 months after Queen Elizabeth II visited the Republic of Ireland, becoming the first British monarch to do so since the State won its independence.

She laid a wreath in the Garden of Remembrance in Dublin to honour Irish soldiers killed during the war for freedom.

    @David Grey:
    You’ll be far to busy making fire and building shelters than worrying about employment. Scavenging wild mushrooms and berries for breakfast, trapping wild grouse and distilling your own urine. Won’t be enough hours in the day as it is.

    Moved from London to remote Mayo, I’m able to work from anywhere and it made sense when we had a kid, 20 years living in NW London to the remote west of Ireland was a daunting thought, but it was amazing, also commuted regularly back to the city via Knock, it was a breeze and much quicker than getting to Dublin, a fantastic place to live, no longer there as I need to engage with Dublin and we’re still figuring out some vital assistances for ‘rural’ Ireland, transport, broadband, etc. It’s maddening how small the island is and how we’ve not yet mastered our way around it, don’t suppose it would be very rural/remote if we did.

    Till you look at the world it all a con , control and greed by a few. Ireland is tiny with a small population , it could be great country throughout for all. Even if we took a small percentage of the people that seek work in the UK our economy could grow.

    Agreed. Though Westport may be the exception rather than the rule, its broadband speed is well ahead of the norm.
    Not to mention the fantastic social life!
