'Young, attractive guy': Trump praises new Syrian leader after lifting US sanctions

The US President is expected to arrive in Qatar at noon today.

LAST UPDATE | 14 May

DONALD TRUMP APPEARS to be a fan of Syria’s president Ahmed al-Sharaa- describing him as a “young, attractive” and “tough guy” following a meeting between the leaders in Saudi Arabia.

The meeting was the first between the leaders of the US and Syria in 25 years.

The US president met Sharaa, a former militant who fought against US forces in Iraq and had a $10m US bounty on his head until December 2024, for about half an hour before a conference of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).

It comes a day after Trump kicked off his Middle East tour where he met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Riyadh yesterday.

Wearing matching suits, Trump and al-Sharaa shook hands as they met jointly with bin Salman, and, by video link, with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the key supporter of the new government in Damascus.

After his discussion with Sharaa, Trump told reporters onboard Air Force One that the Syrian president was a “young, attractive guy. Tough guy. Strong past. Very strong past. Fighter”.

He said he thought Sharaa had a “real shot at holding [Syria] together” and that the Syrian president had agreed to eventually join the Abraham accords, which would normalise Syrian ties with Israel.

The United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco signed the US-brokered accords in 2020.

Turkey and Saudi Arabia had both previously advocated reconciliation with Syria, but the move is the latest to put Trump at odds with Israel, which has voiced pessimism over al-Sharaa and ramped up strikes to degrade the longtime adversary’s military capabilities.

Trump also asked Sharaa during the meeting to deport Palestinian militants and for the new Syrian authorities to take control of camps for captured Islamic State fighters, currently run by Kurdish guerrillas opposed by Turkey, the White House said.

Trump at council meeting President Donald Trump at a group photo session during the Gulf Co-operation Council summit in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

During a speech at an investment forum in the Saudi capital yesterday, Trump extended the diplomatic hand of friendship to war-ravaged Syria by declaring the removal of sanctions against it.

“I will be ordering the cessation of sanctions against Syria in order to give them a chance at greatness,” Trump said.

“What I do for the crown prince,” he added, before being joined on stage by Saudi Arabia’s de facto leader Mohammed bin Salman, who along with Turkey has backed the Sunni Islamists who toppled Bashar al-Assad in December.

Trump has been meeting with leaders and representatives from the six Gulf Cooperation Council states: the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman and Qatar.

The White House said that Riyadh would purchase nearly $142 billion in arms in what it described as the largest-ever weapons deal.

Washington said that Saudi company DataVolt was set to pour $20 billion in artificial intelligence-related projects in the United States.

Tech companies including Google will also invest in both countries – likely welcome news for Saudi Arabia which has long faced restrictions securing advanced American technology.

@Thesaltyurchin: It’s extraordinary to see, a smiling Trump, president of the US, posing in the same photo as a former member of Islamic State and Al-Qaeda, whose ruthless jihadist organisation murdered at least hundreds and possibly over 1,500 Alawite civilians only last March. They more recently attacked a Druze neighbourhood, killing 18 civilians

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_massacres_of_Syrian_Alawites

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Syria_clashes_(April%E2%80%93May_2025)

Ahmed Hussein al-Sharaa (military name: Abu Mohammed al-Julani), was originally a member of Islamic State in Iraq, he joined in 2003.

Abu Mohammed al-Julani was sent to Syria in 2011 by Abu Bakir Al Baghdadi (eventual head of ISIS) as an emissary of Islamic State, where al-Julani set up the Jihadist group, Al-Nusra Front, which at its conception swore allegiance to Al-Qaeda. The group was well funded, paid its fighters, attracted defectors from the Free Syrian Army that swelled its ranks, and was noted for its tactical fighting, it quickly became the dominant rebel group in Syria. Al-Nusra Front eventually broke away from IS over HTS refusing to merge with IS, Al-Nusra Front officially parted ways with Islamic State in 2013. Al-Nusra Front was quickly defeated by Islamic State in eastern Syria, and IS captured 1/3rd of Syria within months, and declared itself ISIS by (I think) June 2014.

That said, al-Sharaa is a tactical genius, I’d rank him almost as high as Khalid ibn al-Walid and Erwin Rommel.

Al-Nusra Front then concentrated on governing the territories it controlled. Eventually, by 2016, it was restricted to Idlib. In particular, Al-Nusra Front, under al-Julani, was astute at making money and governing, that was the key to its success. It also rebranded itself, Ha’yat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), and forced other rebel groups in Idlib to either join them or be driven out (some of those that left joined the Turkish backed Free Syrian Army (TFSA)). What remained was a hard core of HTS loyalists. Also, Sergei Lavrov made an uncharacteristic tactical blunder, in 2015-2016 when the rebels were getting defeated, insisted that surrendering fighters should be sent to Idlib, where he thought jihadist would be boxed in, and the infighting would get worse, it did not. Instead, many fighters joined HTS, making them stringer.

Also, HTS had two main sources of income up to the fall of the Bashar al-Assad led Syrian Regime, taxing imports (mainly oil and farm products) and exports in/out of Idlib and the selling of property confiscated from Assad supporters / Alawites, Shi’a, Christians etc. driven from their homes and businesses by war. HTS also set up a bank and real estate company, al Sham Bank (Trump will love this bit) that financed its military and government,

On the other hand, the Assad regime was subject to crushing US sanctions and an oil embargo, the US military also occupied the valuable oil and gas fields west of the Euphrates. To make money, the Assad regime turned to producing billions of captagon pills, which are a popular stimulant in the ME. Yet, they still ran out of money. It turned into a narco state. Those involved in the drugs trade, often from within or linked by marriage to the Assad clan, were corrupt and the army hated them (there’s an example of Assad’s cousin, Suleiman al-Assad, shooting another driver dead in a road rage incident, normally this would be brushed under the carpet, but this time he killed an important military commander. So Suleiman was arrested, sentenced to 20 years but released after 4). They also lost support from Russia, the forces remaining were weakened, given the focus on Ukraine.

The war was not just about fighting, it also an economic war, and one of bureaucracy and governance. HTS won an economic, bureaucratic and governance war. It was strong, while the Assad regime rotted on the inside.

@joe moody: “US and Israel clearly supported armed and financed these murderous Wahhabi extremist groups”

Correct, and it is ironic in the extreme that the political right, that was once most vocal in criticising the Obama’s administration’s decision to support the rebels including e.g. CIA trained and equipped Nour al-Din al-Zenk (who beheaded a child in 2016, and later merged with HTS in 2017) and advocated support of Russia’s perspective and diplomatic position, of isolating extremest elements while ardently supporting the Assad regime (e.g. Tulsi Gabbard met Assad twice) are now cosying up to extremists, with the POTUS shaking hands and praising former ISIS / Al-Qaeda member. It’s enough to make you dizzy.

    https://www.civilbeat.org/2017/02/gabbard-met-assad-twice-for-a-total-of-two-hours/

I like to remind everyone that several ISIS members were eliminated in Idlib, under the noses of HTS, including Ahmad al-Sharaa’s old boss, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi (his location was uncovered with the help of Kurdish forces via an ISIS prisoner, not HTS).

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Abu_Bakr_al-Baghdadi

And Trump now proposes handing over Kurdish controlled prisons, housing thousands of ISIS, to the Syrian transitional government (HTS).

As I write this, at 8:19am there is not a single article about the case involving the miscarriage of justice against Peter Sullivan in the UK. He served 39 years for a murder he never committed. Labelled a monster and a beast by journalists and women’s groups, the man has now been completely exonerated due to DNA testing. Not the first mind you. Yet, nothing on The Journal. RTE and the BBC are carrying the story.

Makes for chilling reading when one realises that likely hysteria by reclaim the night activists probably lead to Sullivan’s incarceration. And still the man/woman who committed the horrendous murder is likely still out there.

@AnthonyK: Apparently the evidence to exonerate him came to light in 2015, but with the backlog in the British judicial system they only got round to his case 10 years later. Shameful.

@AnthonyK: Another “hush hush case” revolves around the ‘baby on the beach’ in caherciveen. The real parents were eventually identified after nearly 40 years through dna, yet, no further action seems to have taken place. How come we haven’t heard about what actions,if any, are being taken. Justice, apparently hasn’t been served.

Getting a private jet from the Middle East is a bribe.
There is no question about about.
Nothing is given for free. Something else is expected in return.
He is signing agreements based on how much they stroke his ego.
Having a mobile McDonald’s truck following him in the middle East, because he doesn’t eat local foods.
Just shows how opened he is.
He is like a child acting up.
The problem is, his moods affect the stock market, thousands of people being deported and other losing their jobs during these ups and downs.
Where is the nanny to control him ?

Offering a very expensive gift was done before, it never turned out well. Nothing new here.

Normally, the naivety of the Irish, I’m sure, is endearing to those abroad, but the idealogical capture of the Irish public by the terrorist group Hamas is unparalleled. The ordinary punter is led by the nose by SF and FFG has followed suit just to stay in power. The misuse of terms like war crimes and genocide is truly appalling and just goes to show how deep the murderous propaganda has penetrated Western youth culture. Its a phenomenon of our time but is even more bizarre given the neighbouring Arab countries warnings about the dangers of letting Palestinians into your country.Every time trouble emerges where like in Jordan they were bounced our for trying to take over the country.
