Woman in her 80s the fourth person to have been killed on Irish roads over the weekend

Yesterday, four women were killed in separate incidents.

A WOMAN IN her 80s has died following a two-vehicle collision outside Omagh in Co Tyrone yesterday afternoon.

She is the fourth woman to have been killed on Irish roads yesterday.

Bernadette (Bernie) Cranley, from Lifford in Co Donegal, was aged 82.

The PSNI has reported that Bernie was the driver of a silver Toyota Vitz which was involved in a collision with a blue Suzuki Vitara on the Mellon Road between Omagh and Newtownstewart at around 12.30pm yesterday.

The other driver, a woman in her 70s, was taken to hospital by ambulance for treatment to serious injuries.

PSNI Inspector Cherith Adair, from the Collision Investigation Unit, said enquiries are ongoing and that police we would like to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have captured dash-cam footage.

Three other women were killed in separate incidents yesterday – two pedestrians and a cyclist.

In Co Meath, a pedestrian in her 60s died after she was struck by a car on the Dublin Road (R135), Ashbourne, Co Meath at around 7.10pm yesterday evening.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her body has since been removed to the mortuary at Our Lady’s Hospital Navan, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course.

The male driver and passenger of the car, both aged in their 20s, were taken to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for treatment of injuries believed to be non-life-threatening at this time.

Any road users who may have camera footage, including dash-cam, and were travelling in the area between 6.30pm and 7.30pm yesterday are asked to make this footage available.

In a separate incident in Co Wexford yesterday, a pedestrian in her late 20s was killed after being struck by a car on the R702 at Curraghgraigue, Enniscorthy at around 3pm.

She was removed from the scene in a serious condition to Wexford General Hospital and later died from her injuries.   

The male driver of the car, aged in his 20s, received medical assessment at the scene.    

Any road users who may have camera footage and were travelling in the area between 2.30pm and 3.30pm yesterday afternoon are asked to make this footage available.

Meanwhile, a cyclist in her 70s was also killed in a collision with a tractor in Co Clare yesterday.

The collision occurred at around 12.45pm yesterday at Tonnage, Tulla in Co Clare.

No other injuries were reported and investigations are ongoing.
