Naval Service detain Irish registered fishing vessel off Waterford coast

The Naval Service have carried out 1,236 boardings, issued 41 warnings and detained 17 vessels so far in 2012.

IRELAND’S NAVAL SERVICE detained a Irish registered fishing vessel yesterday evening for “alleged breaches of technical fishing regulations.”

The vessel was detained 19 nautical miles South East of Mine Head in County Waterford.

Once detained, the vessel was escorted by L.É. EMER to Cork, where it was handed over to Gardaí in the early hours of this morning.

Irish fishermen are operating at severe disadvantage to foreign vessels. Successive Govts have sold out the fishing industry . These men and some women work under terrible and dangerous conditions to bring fish ashore. They should get greater recognition for their efforts and the Irish authorities should stop pandering to Brussels in relation to fishery policy.

200 billion we’ve handed over in fish so far. Time to call a halt. Claim our waters back and tell Brussels to take a hike. The EU Irish proxy navy should take a hike too

Spanish and Icelandic vessels out-pace the antiquated Irish Navy rust buckets. Easier diplomatically to hammer their own.

Actually they are not faster than the Irish vessels and certainly not faster than the ribs they use with twin 40 or 60 horse power engines…….and anyway just cause it a registered Irish vessel does it mean it Irish owned NO,I wonder how many people here that put out negative comments about the Navel Service actually served time onboard one their vessels…..

    Sean

We Irish love to believe that we’re victims when we get caught breaking the law. For years Fishery Protection Officers were physically assaulted when doing their duty and there is something decidedly dishonest about your claim that our Naval Services discriminates against Irish citizens when they daily work. You clearly display your moral compass with contributions such as that!

Ireland owns 23% of Europe’s fishing waters yet only 4% of the trade. ’nuff said!

No 23% Vinnie, here’s a map of what Ireland actually looks like:

And here’s a map of the EU fishing zones, which also doubles as a terrible attempt at drawing but fairly spot on all the same:
