In pictures: Scale of damage from floods in Texas as more than 160 people still unaccounted for

The death toll from the devastating flash floods stands at 109 people, with search and rescue efforts continuing.

MORE THAN 160 people are still missing amid ongoing search and rescue efforts in Texas, after devastating floods that have so far killed 109 people.

The flash floods erupted before daybreak on Friday after massive rains sent water speeding down hills into the Guadalupe River, causing it to rise 26ft in less than an hour.

Searchers in Kerr Country have so far recovered 90 bodies.

The bodies of 30 children are among those that have been recovered in the county, which is home to several youth camps, including Camp Mystic, the century-old all-girls Christian summer camp where at least 27 campers and counsellors died.

Officials said that five campers and one counsellor have still not been found.

The flood is the deadliest from inland flooding in the US since Colorado’s Big Thompson Canyon flood on 31 July 1976 killed 144 people, with public officials now facing intensifying questions about who was in charge of monitoring the weather and warning that floodwaters were heading toward camps and homes.

Here are some images from Texas showing the impact the floods have had:

Many images taken from above depict damaged and destroyed buildings near the banks of the Guadalupe River following the flooding.

The devastation spread across several hundred miles in central Texas all the way to just outside the capital of Austin.

Outside the cabins at Camp Mystic where the girls had slept, mud-splattered blankets and pillows were scattered on a grassy hill that slopes toward the river.

@Buster Lawless: How much are lives worth?

‘Cruz, Abbott and climate-sceptic Republicans continue to cast climate disasters as ‘part of nature’ or ‘acts of God’, proffering a remedy of prayer over safety systems and nudging local media towards focusing on acts of heroism rather than funding cuts or ignored warnings …

‘At a local level, towns and counties that voted 80 per cent for Trump in 2024 have repeatedly vetoed the imposition of advance warning systems and flood warning sirens as being too costly. The taxpayers won’t pay for it, Kelly said of a flood siren system that cost just $300,000 to implement in neighbouring Comal County.’

@Buster Lawless: It appears that the deaths are partly the fault of the Republican mindset, as exemplified by Trump and put into action by the likes of Cruz.

@Buster Lawless: Buster you shouldn’t waste your time on that arrogant git. He will accuse Trump of negligence in this case but he’ll excuse Biden and Obama who had 3 terms of President between them. What flood warnings did they implement? What evacuation plans were in place in case of a natural disaster? He can’t see past his hatred for Trump, Republicans, conservatives and anyone of a different opinion to himself. He trolls this site daily seeking altercations, it’s creepy, he must get off on it.

@Barry Murphy: Regardless of the president it was the county officials who should have been in charge and these same officials who failed to protect the people. Some of these officials voted against warning systems going back to as far as 2005, in one case it was said that the warning system would disturb people needlessly. Some neighbouring counties installed warning systems and as a result have had far fewer deaths, also some officials from other nearby counties took part in talks with the National Weather Service and FEMA while nobody from the worst-affected county did. The leaders and officials failed the people in that county and over 100 people are dead possibly over 250.

@Sato: So we’re in agreement that it was the county officials fault and not Trumps. Every bad incident in America is blamed on Trump, whether its a natural disaster or gun related. The Liberal left don’t believe in personal responsibility, they’re blinded by their hatred of everything and anything outside their rule book.

@Barry Murphy: he may be a s€üm bag with no morals and he is lacking in intelligence but he has no control over the weather, his RIF’s at FEMA and Weather service wont help people long term but from what I have seen and have read they had very little if any impact on this event. I still think the world would be a better place if he had never gotten into politics in the first place and in particular if he were not the president now.

@Sato: I totally agree with you. The world could be a whole lot better if a very high percentage of ‘Politicians’ had never entered politics. Governments should be formed like the private sector, you lose your job if you don’t achieve results. Incompetence should never be rewarded. Transparency should be non negotiable. Anyway enjoy your evening, time to spark up the bbq and enjoy a few cold ones.
