The 9 at 9 Hot weather warning to kick in, uncertainty over appearance of George Gibney, and loyalist bonfire in Northern Ireland with effigy of refugees set alight.

LAST UPDATE | 11 Jul

GOOD MORNING.

Here’s all the news you need to know to start the day.

George Gibney

1. George Gibney is still listed as required to appear at a hearing in a Florida courthouse today.

But uncertainty remains over whether the former Irish National and Olympic swimming coach will appear in person, after he agreed to be extradited to Ireland where he will face 79 charges in connection with the alleged abuse of four girls.

Weather warning

2. A Status Yellow high temperature warning will kick in at noon today for the east and midlands of the country.

Temperatures are expected to spike up to 29 degrees at 5pm today, with temperatures ranging between 25 degrees and 29 degrees between the hours of 1pm to 9pm in the affected counties.

Eleventh night

3. A loyalist bonfire in Northern Ireland that was controversially topped with an effigy of refugees in a boat was set alight last night.

An Irish tricolour flag was also placed on the bonfire, which is among about 300 which will be burned across last night and tonight in the region, ahead of the Orange Order’s annual 12 July parades.

Texas floods

4. US President Donald Trump is set to visit Texas today as questions mounted over the response to flash floods that have left at least 120 people dead, including dozens of children.

The Republican leader and First Lady Melania Trump will meet first responders and local officials in central Texas’s Hill Country, a week after heavy rainfall and an overflowing river swept away houses, trees, cars and people.

Kyiv

5. Russian air defence systems intercepted 155 Ukrainian drones in an overnight barrage, the defence ministry said today, with local officials saying at least two people were killed by drones.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, said this morning on Telegram that at least 28 people, including two minors, were wounded in Russian shelling yesterday.

Drug dependency

6. New research suggests the stigma around drug addiction may be dissipating, as only a third of people believe those who are drug dependent only have themselves to blame.

The figure is down from 57% in similar research carried out in 2000 by Merchants Quay Ireland.

Tour de France

7. Ireland’s Ben Healy yesterday produced a stunning breakaway to win stage six of the Tour de France on what he described as an “amazing” day.

And on a famous afternoon Eddie Dunbar crossed the line of the 201.5km from Bayeux to Vire Normandie stage in fourth.

Wicklow

8. Five men were arrested after an alleged assault in Arklow, Co Wicklow yesterday afternoon.

A man aged in his 30s was brought St. Vincent’s Hospital for treatment of injuries, which are believed not to be life-threatening at this time.

Road death

9. A man in his 70s has died following a single-vehicle road traffic collision.

The collision occurred at approximately 5am yesterday morning in Ballinderry, Enfield, Co Meath.
