Hot spell: Nationwide status yellow temperature warning takes effect

The Status Yellow temperature warning is in place until 6am tomorrow.

LAST UPDATE | 12 Jul

A STATUS YELLOW heat warning has taken effect across Ireland, with temperatures hitting a sweltering 30 degrees in the Midlands.

Met Éireann says this week’s hot spell will continue today, making it very warm with the highest temperatures ranging from 26 to 30 degrees.

But there is a warning that thundery downpours and potential for flooding is in store for Connacht tomorrow afternoon.

A status yellow temperature warning kicked in for the entire country from noon. The warning is valid until 6am tomorrow.

The temperature this morning at 7am was 18 degrees in most parts, hitting the 20 degree mark on Valencia in Co Kerry.

By 11am it was averaging out at 24 degrees but soared to 26 degrees at Oak Park weather station in Co Carlow and Mount Dillon in Co Roscommon. Just before 5pm, temperatures of 30 degrees were measured at various locations in the Midlands, inclusive Mount Dillon and Mullingar.

Coastal areas were several degrees lower. Dublin Airport measured 26 degrees, while Sherkin Island off of Co Cork was a comparatively cool 22 degrees.

An earlier heat warning for 14 counties lifted at 6am this morning.

While some parts in the likes of the south-west will see their day with patchy fog, this will clear quickly. and it will be dry and sunny with light to moderate southeasterly winds.

However, Met Éireann has issued a Status Yellow thunderstorm warning for Connacht tomorrow.

It will be valid from 3pm until 10pm and will see heavy, thundery downpours in parts with a risk of surface water flooding.

Conditions will be dry and muggy tonight – Met Éireann has warned there will be uncomfortable sleeping conditions as a result of the hot spell.
