INLAND FISHERIES IRELAND (IFI) have launched an investigation into a “significant” fish kill in Co Cavan that left more than 1,000 fish dead.
The incident was recorded along a 1km stretch of the Ballinagh River in Co Cavan.
IFI was alerted to a contamination impact in the water by a member of the public on Sunday evening.
Environmental and fisheries staff identified brown trout, stickleback minnow and roach among the species discovered dead.
Water samples have been taken from the scene, and IFI is following a definite line of enquiry into the suspected source of the pollution.
Dr Milton Matthews, director of IFI’s North-Western River Basin District, said high temperatures and low-flow conditions “do not appear to be the primary cause of this incident”.
“The needless loss of so many young fish, at a time when Ireland’s natural environment is already under considerable pressure, is deeply disappointing,” Matthews said.
IFI said it will continue to actively examine the cause of the harmful ecological event at the river.
The organisation is appealing to people to report instances of fish kills or suspected water pollution through its 24-hour confidential phoneline 0818 34 74 24.
Separately, IFI officers responded to a fish kill in Co Cork last week in which at least 1,500 fish died.
It happened on Ballybrack stream, a small tributary of the Douglas River flowing near Douglas village in Cork.
The dead fish were primarily brown trout and European eels.

We are not talking a small amount of hash we are talking pure cocaine … I don’t feel sympathy for them , yes I know your going to say young and all that crap . But at 18 they are presumed adults . They have been regarded as adults since they were 16 living on their own abroad . What amazes me people who go on saying awwww god love them they are only kids … Wake up .. you play with the big boys you are bound to get hurt .

Greed played a major part in it as it always does . I feel for the innocent people who get caught up in it .ie their parents and family and friends .

@Emma A mistake is wearing mules to a wedding, or kissing the postman after a few too many sherries at Bridge night. Transporting class A drugs through customs to a South American country for a cartel in return for monetary gain is not a “mistake”

Get a grip,she certainly could have been responsible for peoples deaths with the amount of drugs she was trying to smuggle,and furthermore the Garda here could take a few lessons from Peru on how to go about getting results with much less resorces.

Do the crime , do the time. Don’t think these two were very bothered about the end users of the drugs they were carrying or how many new addicts new criminals or new dead bodies they could be creating by importing these drugs.
I think the media has really taken an odd stance on this too. The whole thing appears to have been glamorised and even this ridiculous “Peru two” serves only to create a kind of unique persona about two drug runners. I can’t quite understand the blasé attitude a lot of people seem to have towards them.
Shouldn’t get involved in the drugs trade if you don’t like the taste of prison food.

Michaella does have an irish passport and was travelling on it. Had she not been I doubt the dept of foreign affairs would have any reason to act on her behalf. It is awful what they have done but who are the bigger criminals here, the drug barons and the men that coerced these very nieve young adults? Lets hope they can serve their sentences back in their respective countries.
why should the taxpayers here or in the uk pay for their incarrseration? they were caught in puru so they should do their time in puru, as for the ’30 to a cell’ stuff, well its only a pity we dont do the same here, then we might not get so many repeat offenders.

I kinda feek bad for her. I was in the same boat last year. Went through security and they found 3 bottles of pepsi in my carry on. They let me through but they confiscated the contraband!

They made a stupid mistake but I dont think they deserve to go to prison for 20 years plus for this they didnt get it off the ground there was obviously someone behind it and though we dont know what was offered but yeah they knew what they were doing but god knows what spin was put on it, its their families I feel sorry for and this is a very worryng development
