Al Gore's Reddit AMA: The best bits

The former Veep has finished an AMA session on Reddit… see what he had to say.

FORMER VICE PRESIDENT of the United States Al Gore has just finished a half-hour AMA (ask me anything) session on Reddit.

Here are his best bits…

  • alllie: Some years ago you were asked if you thought the 2000 election was stolen. You said: “There may come a time when I speak on that, but it’s not now; I need more time to frame it carefully if I do. In our system, there’s no intermediate step between a definitive Supreme Court decision and violent revolution.” Are you ready to address that question now?
I haven’t ruled out addressing that at some point in my life, but no, I don’t believe now is the time to do it, if that time ever comes.
  • antiscian: For people that may be sceptical about global warming, what is the one undeniable scientific fact that you feel backs it up the most effectively?
There are at least 15 deeply researched separate lines of evidence that all confirm man-made global warming. They are all consistent, each with the others. Every National Academy of Science on the planet agrees with the consensus. The Academies describe the evidence as “indisputable”.

Every professional scientific society in every field related to climate science and earth science also agree. And 97-98% of climate scientists worldwide most actively publishing also agree. Animals and plants also agree — in that they are moving their ranges by latitude and altitude to find climate niches similar to the ones in which they evolved.

Even if you leave climate science completely out of it and just measure extreme temperatures, the statistical record of global temperatures shows that three-standard deviation events have increased from 0.25% of the time (from 1951-1980) to 10% of the time now. There is as strong a consensus as you will find in science, with the possible exception of the existence of gravity.

  • pagemansmith: I understand you and Tommy Lee Jones were roomates in college. What was he like?
He is, first of all, a terrific friend. He really is an amazing guy. As good at directing as at acting, btw. Check out his performance in Spielberg’s Lincoln. Incredible! I hope he gets another Oscar for it. I’m biased, but I sure think he deserves it.
  • Oogity_Boogity_Boo: What advice would you give President Obama to accomplish his objectives during his second term? What advice would you give to us, the public, in dealing with the harsh realities of the partisan divide?
Stand on principle. As Mark Twain said, “Do the right thing! You’ll ratify your friends and astonish your enemies.” Start with climate.

If that film ‘chad’ is even partially true Al Gore was robbed of the 2000 election. It’s big pity as I’m sure he would have made a big push on the future environmental problems.

Biggest robbery ever 500+ votes. Dubya Bush winning in the state governed by his brother Jeb Bush and the Florida attorney general bush-family friend and ruled on by the Supreme court with appointees from Pres George H Bush.
Al Gore had a better chance of becoming a snowman in Hell.

Someone should have asked him if the solution of global warming can come from government.

Because we all know government is good at what it gets its hands on.

Like education, and healthcare, and printing money, and housing. Anyone wanna take a guess at government involvement in climate change?

Fair point, tackling climate change has to be made financially attractive in order for something positive to happen. It seems as if the the only financial approach is to penalise rather to incentivise.

Only thing that bothers me about this approach is that the moment “we” start to bring oil in from the porcupine basin etc, the price will probably drop through the floor!!

I understand it was a good (if understandably short) AMA but can we please not let reporting on Reddit become a thing

I was curious about this when I read the article.surely this is a u turn from thejournal staff saying that they don’t take articles/links from reddit.I haven’t seen this linked to any major network news/website(thus far)..so it must have come directly from the source(reddit). the journals journalists have argued week on week to comments here that they haven’t blatently poached a reddit front page article, put it under their own title and posted on thejournal.ie …surely the editor is on holiday or else your writers are lying?

Genuinely, I don’t see what the problem is here. If the source is reliable and factual, and the story is of interest, who cares where it comes from?
