Trump suggested that countries rush to reach a deal after being threatened with high tariff rates. Alamy

Trump says EU-US tariff deal 'possible', but he's 'indifferent to it'

US President Donald Trump said the new trade deal will be ‘a lot different’ to current agreements.

A DEAL BETWEEN the US and EU to prevent the implementation of tariffs on European goods exported to America is “possible”, President Donald Trump has said.

Negotiators are under renewed pressure to strike a deal after Trump last week threatened a 30% tariff would be in place for the EU if a new trade agreement was not reached by 1 August.

The European Commission this week renewed its mandate to continue negotiations to strike a deal, which Trump has now suggested may be reacher soon.

Speaking to broadcaster Real America’s Voice, the US President said: “We could possibly make a deal with the EU [...] The EU, the European Union, has been brutal. But now they’re being very nice, and they want to make a deal.

“It will be a lot different from the deal that we have had for years. I was going to do them last time, but then we had Covid come up, and it wasn’t a good time to tell Spain and France, ‘Guess what, you’re going to be paying a lot of money’.”

Speaking earlier in the interview, Trump suggested that foreign administrations rush to reach a deal after receiving a letter from the White House which threatens high tariff rates.

It was widely rumoured last week that the EU was close to striking a deal, with European Trade Commissioner and lead negotiator Maroš Šefčovič agreeing on Monday that he felt let down after Trump threatened to impose a 30% tariff.

“We are showing an enormous patience and enormous creativity to find solutions, but if it reaches 30+%, quite simply, the trading as we know it will not continue, with a huge negative effect on both sides of the Atlantic,” Šefčovič told reporters this week.

Trump said last night: “We could make a deal, possibly, with Europe. I’m very indifferent to it because I sent out a letter, I think we had 30%. That means 30% of everything they do they give to us, it’s not a bad business.”

Tánaiste and Trade minister Simon Harris told cabinet on Tuesday that the new 30% tariff rate on goods from the EU could accelerate potential job losses in Ireland.

Employment minister Peter Burke said the new, higher rate made it very difficult to assess the potential impact.

    More TACO bluster again.

Without ASML, or with a 30% tariff added, U.S. chip ambitions would suffer and maybe collapse. Boeing, one of the largest blue-collar employers in the U.S., relies heavily on Safran and other European companies as key joint venture partners. Siemens, ABB, and Schneider are critical suppliers for U.S. energy infrastructure.

Europe is not a foreign competitor—it is an essential partner to the U.S. As usual, Trump is too primitive to understand that the world is much bigger than the United States and they will suffer just as much from their own tariffs.

@Stanley Marsh: The so-called files of the late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein that everyone is suddenly talking about — again — don’t contain any dirt on President Trump. If they did, the unethical and unscrupulous President Biden would have released them.
    I would repeat that.
All the hand-wringing and bloviating from the Democrats demanding the release of the “files” is just that, a sudden growth of conscience by an immoral bunch of prevaricators playing politics.
Epstein (who gets no “Mr.” honorific because he was a skeevy perv) killed himself on Aug. 10, 2019. Or, more plausibly, didn’t. A guy who once shared his cell at the hellhole known as the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City said Monday that there’s “just no way” the convicted pedophile committed suicide.

@thomas molloy: Why would Biden release them. Lots of democrats past and present have been photographed with Epstein. So releasing them will clearly damage both the republicans and democrats. So no biden wouldn’t have released them and it would be self sabotaging. You can bet your mortgage that if Trump wasn’t in the files he would most definitely have released them.

@thomas molloy: Why is he hiding the files? If he is innocent he would release thr files. You are quite clearly a fully paid up member of his cult….but even at that, why would you not want files released? Whether Trump is listed or not, that would bring to justice a shocking number of paedophiles? Release the files and bring those in the files, regardless of theor political affiliation to justice. By not releasing them, as you thinknis OK, paedophiles are being protected. Do you think paedos should be protected?

If Biden was protecting people then he should be brought to justice too.

Their food or cleaning products companies mostly have factories in EU.
Almonds is one that they’ve a huge market share of, since California produces about 70% of global supply.
Hard to think of produce or meat they supply, that I’d buy.

If were to take into account digital services, accountancy firms, law firms, auditors, etc etc… then the deficit claims don’t hold up in any way. Not that even their claims about physical goods are particularly valid either. The penguins have very articulately disproven them.

That’s going to change. “Several US companies are actively involved in the electric vehicle (EV) market. These include well-established manufacturers like Tesla, Ford, and General Motors, as well as newer companies like Rivian and Lucid Motors. Other companies like Canoo and Fisker are also developing and producing electric vehicles.”

Are you by chance counting Vat and VRT in your incorrect claim as they are one not tariffs and two they are charged on all vehicles.
US vehicles are two big, two petrol hungry and a lot of them do not pass the safety standards in Ireland. The Tesla’s we get are made in Germany and China and the Chinese make cheaper better cars than the US and they pay a massive tariff of 17% to 35% and 10% import duty on top. Yet everybody is buying them! As they are better and cheaper than the US junk!
