2. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer are set to make it official this morning and sign a new ‘friendship agreement’ between their two countries.

A new treaty will refer to the turbulent security situation and is expected to say that the countries “shall assist on another” in case of an “armed attack”.

Trump ‘indifferent’ over EU deal

3. US President Donald Trump has said he is “indifferent” to a future deal with the EU to mitigate the implementation of tariffs.

Speaking to the conservative news stations last night, the Republican president said, despite that, a deal is “possible”.

Linda Evans Christian murder probe

4. Gardaí have renewed an appeal for information on the investigation into the murder of Linda Evans Christian in 2017.

Today marks the 8th anniversary of the discovery of Linda’s body. Despite an extensive Garda investigation and a number of enquiries, including the arrest of a man in 2018, no one has been brought to justice for Linda’s murder.

Keeping Gazans offline

5. Tech journalist Elaine Burke has reported on the lack of communications available to the population of Gaza in an interview with Palestinian NGO Miftah.

Tomorrowland fire

7. Tomorrowland festival’s main stage went up in flames in Belgium, just one day before the music event was due to kick-off.

The event is expecting a crowd of 100,000 people in the first of the two weekends today. Tomorrowland said the main stage has been “severely damaged”, but the event is set to press ahead.

EU Budget nets mixed reaction

8. The European Commission proposed a €2tn budget, focused on tackling overseas competition and Russian aggression at Europe’s borders, yesterday – with Commission President Ursula von der Leyen claiming it “will be the most ambitious ever proposed”.

But Brussels came under heavy criticism by EU politicians, who accused it of not leaving sufficient funds for priorities including climate adaptation and the agriculture subsidies that currently make up the biggest share of the EU’s budget.

Overnight flights

9. A decision on whether overnight take-offs at Dublin Airport will be limited to fewer than 36 flights per night will be announced today, it is understood.

An Coimisúin Pleánala in September issued a draft ruling which sought to limit the total number of late-night flights to 13,000 per year. Transport minister and Fianna Fáil TD Darragh O’Brien is understood to have briefed his parliamentary party on the issue.
