The 9 at 9 Here are the nine stories you need to know as you kick off your day.

EVERY MORNING, TheJournal.ie brings you the nine stories you need to know as you kick off your day.

1. #GAZA: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called for an end to the conflict in Gaza which has seen at least 85 people killed as the violence enters its sixth day. The Israel Defence Forces (IDF) says 1,350 sites in the Gaza strip have been targeted as part of Operation Pillar of Defence which began last Wednesday.

2. #SAVITA: The HSE has said it may publish the terms of reference of its inquiry into the death of Savita Halappanavar today, having confirmed that an international expert in obstetrics and gynecology will join the six-person inquiry team. Savita’s husband Praveen will be consulted as part of the inquiry. Separately, the Irish Times reports that Archbishop of Dublin Diarmuid Martin has expressed his unhappiness with the reaction to the death of Savita and said that Ireland remains a safe country in which to be pregnant.

3. #PROTESTS: Third-level students are to escalate their demonstrations against further cuts to student grants and increases in university fees this week. The Union of Students in Ireland says thousands are expected to attend protest marches in Dublin, Dundalk and Sligo over the next five days as part of its pre-Budget campaign.

4. #GARDAÍ: One third of all Garda stations across the country are staffed by just one Garda, according to figures obtained by the Irish Examiner. A total of 205 stations out of almost 660 stations, mainly located in small rural villages, have one serving Garda, while a further 88 stations have just two.

5. #REBRANDING: National Irish Bank is officially no more – Danske Bank has completed its rebrand of the bank as of today. All 27 branches around the country have been closed and around 100 jobs have been lost as part of a cost-cutting measure by Danske Bank which will see customers using online and telephone services instead.

6. #PAS DE DEUX: The battle to succeed former president Nicolas Sarkozy as the leader of France’s main opposition party has become mired in confusion this morning after both candidates claimed victory amid allegations of ballot rigging. The count is set to resume at 9 o’clock this morning Irish time.

7. #BURMA: Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton met with Aung San Suu Kyi in Burma this morning as Obama became the first serving US president to visit the country.

8. #WHAT THE FLIUCH? Break out the anoraks: Harsh wintry weather which has hit parts of the country over the past 24 hours is set to persist for the rest of the week, with gale force winds, heavy rain, and a risk of minor localised flooding.

9. #RATBO: Enda Kenny: Taoiseach, teacher… rat-killer? A new biography entitled The Unlikely Taoiseach  reveals that the Taoiseach had a brief calling as a sharpshooting rat-killer when the poor conditions of the school building he was teaching in necessitated a rodent cull. Who knew?

  • Over on DailyEdge.ie: Journalists get naked on board Rihanna’s plane, Justin Bieber throws a tantrum in funny trousers, and Ryan Gosling gets a massage from Michael Fassbender… it’s The Dredge.

Your beloved president Maurice, absolutely outrageous that you pretend to care now, don’t remember you calling on the UN to do something about Trump and the US recognising Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. I cannot believe you are sat there and pretend to care about the Palestinians when for 4 years we all had to put up with you supporting Trump and Israel being besties. The audacity of you of all people.

BUT so are Israel for shooting through the human shield hoping to hit a target. Equally despicable, maybe even more so imo. @Squarepeg01: The use of human shields is a well documented Occupation force tactic, it is called ‘the neighbour policy’, it involves civilians being forced at gunpoint to walk in front of Occupation forces and has been reported by Breaking the Silence, it was widely used during the Jenin massacre. Israeli deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure is also well documented, it is known as the Dahiya Doctrine, you can read about it on TRT World, Israel’s’ Dahiya Doctrine’, a plan for mass civilian deaths in Gaza.

@Squarepeg01: Well that’s not true. Gaza is one of the most densely populated places on earth due to israeli occupation and land grabbing for settlers. Therefore the reason that there are so many civilians there is purely down to israel and its occupation. On top of that Israel know all this and know how densely populated it is but still bombard it without a care in the world. And one pilot calling off an airstrike out of all the airstrike that have happened is hardly an argument.

@Squarepeg01: Nethanyahu has openly stated he will never allow a Palestinian state to be established. Israeli governments have transferred hundreds of thousands of colonists onto Occupied land, a war crime under the Geneva Conventions, since the Oslo accords were signed. John Kerry said after his attempts at mediation for the Obama administration that the biggest obstacle to a peace process was the Israeli government. If anyone wants to see the concessions the Palestinians were willing to make for an agreement, look up the Palestine Papers. The Arab League peace plan has been in place since 2000, Israel has ignored it.

Yes, because they are acting in self defence. You don’t have to think the settlements are a good idea to hold this opinion. The Palestinian resort to violence is out of intolerance of living with their Jewish neighbours. They could have had a state several times over if their leaders had been serious about obtaining one, even with Israeli obstruction.

Palestinians suffer from Israeli violence on a daily basis, both from the Occupation forces and Price Tag terrorists. The PA is both corrupt and powerless, even their ministers have to ask permission to travel from the Occupation forces. There will be no chance of a settlement until there is significant pressure put on the Israeli government from the rest of the world, much like how South African apartheid was ended by grassroots pressure, the same is already happening world wide, Israel needs to act now from a position of strength, end the Occupation, end the violence.

Hamas moved in and destroyed all vestiges of the former settlers that could have been used to improve the lives of Gazans. They went on to win the election the following year (and haven’t held another one since) and proceeded to gear their economy not toward encouraging startups and business opportunities, but to the war effort against Israel. If you elect a group whose stated aim is to wage war against your militarily stronger neighbour, nobody should be surprised by the results.

And when you freeze that process, you prevent the establishment of a Palestinian state, and you prevent a discussion on the refugees, the borders and Jerusalem. Effectively, this whole package called the Palestinian state, with all that entails, has been removed indefinitely from our agenda. @Gavan Duffy: selective quoting on your part, I think. This from the same article you referenced: “…and the rest will not be dealt with until the Palestinians turn into Finns.” This has always been the Israeli position – the Palestinians do not want peace. The Israelis won’t accept a deal without iron clad security built in.

Because the IDF gives warnings to civilians near a target they are intending to strike. Hamas, on the other hand, would like to kill every last Jew in Israel. @Brian Kelly: absolute rubbish. People have been killed by Hamas’s rockets, including a migrant worker from India and Gazans themselves when their rockets fall short. The reason there haven’t been more Israeli deaths is because the Iron Dome intercepts the rockets and the Air Force intercepts the slower bomb-laden Hamas drones. Gaza, as it turns out, also has an Iron Dome missile defence system: it’s called ‘Don’t fire rockets at Israel.’

@Kilkenny Friends of Israel: Dropping bombs on Gaza is akin to shooting fish in a barrel. The have no planes, no tanks, no bombs, no precision weapons of any kind. Where as Israel have the latest and greatest inc satellites and drones. Its like cavemen fighting the roman army. The thing is the Palestinians fled their homes to Gaza and are now stuck there in a permanent refugee camp. Where are they gonna go. Their families have lived in Palestine for 100s of years. The are both Christian and Muslim. Just over the border you have Israelis from America and elsewhere who are not from Israel and who’s family have no connection with Israel celebrating the killing of little children who have done nothing. Can you imagine the fear of bombs raining down on you and there is nothing you can do or no where you can go. Israel controls everything all the borders and the sea. Its not even safe on the beach where Israel blew up a few kids a few years ago. When the Gazans were protesting at the wall last year, Israeli snipers were shooting them in the knees maiming people. Just yesterday they bombed all the roads leading to a hospital meaning ambulances can no longer go there. They also blew up part of a Christian monastery that was providing aid to people.

Imagine if the roles were reversed. Imaging Jewish people in their homes and massive precision bombs raining down. The terror and fear they would face. Before you start about the homemade garage rockets that are being fired. They don’t have 1/1000 of the fire power of a Israeli one. The chances of someone being killed from one is tiny, barely 1%. In Israel dogs are held at a higher value than Muslims. Like the North of Ireland in 1969, a Jewish state for a Jewish people instead of equal opportunity for all.

I don’t particularly like the theocratic right in Israel, but I still accept the need for a Jewish state that exists primarily as a haven for Jewish people, because without the protection of such a state in the ME, Jews cannot live there with any degree of safety.

@Squarepeg01: you really think that having a Jewish only state in the birth place of 3 major world religions is a good idea. Not only that but forcefully evicting the native populations of Christians and muslims. Where are they gonna go, into the sea? Not only that but Jewish people all over the world are invited to live in Israel granted automatic citizenship even though muslims who family lives there for generations are denied citizenship. They are 2nd class citizens based on religion. Secular states work but as in Northern Ireland prioritising one religion over another caused conflict. Happened in Northern Ireland. There will never be peace in the middle east as long as Israel goes down the road it’s on. Equality of opportunity for all or conflict. Do they really think that bombing and killing the Palestinians is going to make them stop trying to defend themselves and fight for a better life and existence. Look at the US war in Vietnam. The Vietnamese won because where else were they gonna go. Doesn’t matter how many bombs are dropped they will continue to fight and never stop. Is the Israelis expansion in the west bank helping thing?? Nope. Is the stealing of resources from the west bank helping things? No. Are the Israeli soldiers in the west bank helping things. No. What you are talking about means nothing there are bigger issues.

This should not be happening and Ireland should be one of the countries shouting against the treatment of the Palestinian people. We know what it’s like to be pushed off our own lands and murdered for them. This is completely unacceptable.
Yes, to the world, Hamas may be viewed as terrorists. To a world who do not know what it’s like to be violently and unfairly occupied by another state. They only formed as a way to help defend their people and their land.
There’s never justification for civilian lives lost- on both sides. However, the Palestinian people can’t give up any more of their land or they’ll have no space to move. They are desperate and need to try to hold on to what they have left. The worlds leaders should be supporting the Palestinian civilians.

Looks like the Irish are on the wrong side of the argument inside the EU on this 1, most countries in the world think Israel have the right to defend themselves from Hamas, majority of people see them as terrorists not freedom fighters, who dont care about their own people thats why they fire rockets from residential areas and live amongst the civilians who they use as a shield. Reminds me of another group of people the Irish support.

EU divisions over Israel-Palestine leave Brussels powerless as conflict worsens

The bloc has long failed to find a common position on the intractable conflict in Middle East.

Among the 27 member countries, Belgium, Ireland, Sweden and Luxembourg are among those most critical of Israel. Countries in Eastern Europe, especially Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, are among those in strongest support of Israel, though in recent days the flag of Israel has flown prominently over the HQ of Germany’s biggest governing party and official buildings in Austria and the Czech Republic in a show of support. Greece and Cyprus have also grown closer to Israel in recent years, partly because of tensions with Turkey.

France typically seeks to stake out more neutral ground, but President Emmanuel Macron’s office has issued statements in recent days that tilted decidedly toward Israel. The Elysée’s statements “firmly condemned rocket launching claimed by Hamas and other terrorist groups targeting the Israeli territory,” but were vaguer when referencing Israeli bombing.
