Relatives of people thought to have been killed by the Basque armed separatist group ETA, protest against the release from jail of ETA member, Josu Uribetxeberria in September AP Photo/Alvaro Barrientos

ETA says it’s ready to disband if certain conditions are met

The armed Basque separatist group has issued a statement saying it wants to bring home some of its prisoners.

SPAIN’S ARMED BASQUE separatist group ETA has said it’s ready to discuss disbanding and to negotiate with France and Spain if certain conditions are met, in a statement published on a Basque news site.

The group, which last year said it had abandoned violence after a four-decade campaign for an independent homeland that claimed more than 800 lives, said one outstanding issue was the transfer of Basque prisoners to jails closer to home.

ETA wanted to discuss “formulas and timetables” to bring home prisoners and Basque political exiles; disarmament and the break-up of its armed structures; and the demobilisation of ETA members.

The statement ran on Naiz.info, the website of the Basque newspaper Gara.

Until yesterday’s statement, the group had refused to announce its dissolution and disarmament, as demanded by Spain and France.

But weakened by a series of arrests in France and Spain in recent years, ETA said Saturday it was ready to “listen to and analyse” proposals from Madrid and Paris.

The two governments would have a “precise knowledge” of its positions, it added.

Gara said it would publish the full statement in its Sunday edition.

ETA has been placed on a list of terrorist organisations by the United States and the European Union and has been blamed for the deaths of 829 people. Its last attack on Spanish soil was in August 2009.

It has persistently called for around 700 Basque prisoners incarcerated in jails across Spain to be transferred back to prisons in the Basque region so they can be closer to their families.

They are a miserable and unsophisticated load of gombeens out to line their own pockets and treating us like the proverbial ass that will carry them and their loads further up the country roads. WHY THE ****CK ARE WE BEING ORDERED TO PAY 5EUR/M3 FOR WATER? THIS IS AN EXTORTIONATE RATE. MUCH HIGHER THAN MANY EU COUNTRIES. DOUBLE THE RATE FOR COMPANIES! PEOPLE NEED TO WAKE UP AND JOIN THE PROTEST IN DUBLIN 01 NOV OR PAY 700EUR FOR H2O AND DONT COMPLAIN. DO THE MATH XM3/DAY * 365 DAYS/YR. COUNT ON 0.15M3 PER DAY PER PERSON. IF U WATER UR GARDEN OR WASH UR CAR ADD MORE. DO THE MATH! AND OH YEAH DONT DEDUCT THE ALLOWANCE AS THIS CAN DISAPPEAR IN A FLASH AND STILL THE RATE OF 5EUR STAYS. THE ALLOWANCES ARE TO GET UR PPS NO. AND DETAILS ONLY. THE 280 EUR CAP IS GONE IN 9 MONTHS.

A cool head, massive protest by the people, and systematic refusal to pay…that’s how we win this… This time they will have to realise that the proper, good, decent members of society are not going to tow the line…play pansy and just handover a cent for a utility we have already paid for. A cool head is needed….there is no doubt there will be some elements on Nov 1st there to incite trouble/riot/arguments…fodder for RTE and their paymasters….Keep it cool and calm…we will win

@ Damien, the charge is 4.88 or 2.44 if you have your own septic tank for example. Your €700 per year quote above, for water is purely a number you picked out of the air to dramatise the situation. The ‘math’ as you call it, shows that 0.15m3 is 150litres and there’s no way the 4 people in my house are using 600 litres of water a day, we flush, we shower, we clean clothes, wash dishes, we cook. If you are using 600 litres per day then you are one of the many wasteful people who use resources like there’s no tomorrow, then maybe they should set an incremental charge to target you and your kind.

John, even economically I get to 0.42m3/day for 4 people and that’s without washing the car or using the wash machine or watering any plants or gardens. Just work it out. Shower, drinking water, tea, toilet. Washing the dishes….Thats 712eur excl allowances. Those allowances are worth for a family of 4 about 350eur but guess is these will be reduced over time or eliminated either by this or future administrations. Either way its a lot of money. If and when iw is sold the rate could be increased or allowances done away with. People are well able to work this out. It is double taxation and no I dont the liars in dublin should have given 600 mil car tax and 450 mil property tax to set up this new quango. Remember what we were told the property tax would be used for…that’s right local services. So they lied about that too.

    Howdy Folks,

Some important information regarding post codes has just come to light.

We are getting postcodes called EIRCODEs next year but they are a screw up. They will be no use for emergency services in the case of a road traffic accident or any other accident or incident that does not take place in a dwelling.

So they are only good for a dwelling, meaning that they are only good for a water tax, property tax and for TV licence. They cannot be used for reporting a bad pothole, they cannot be used to report livestock on a road, they cannot be used to guide an ambulance to an RTA, they cannot be used to report a house fire in a rural area unless the person reporting the fire knows the postcode because they will be secret and need an expensive database to work that will require regular costly updates to your GPS or in car satnave to be accurate.

A BRITISH company won the tender to give us EIRCODEs that company is called Capita PLC and they specialise in collecting the council tax in places like Birmingham…oh they also bough NAMA loans and are very much embedded in other shxtholes like Afghanistan and Iraq.

So who was the chairman of the government’s Postcode Working Group that recommended a crap 1960s era code….who is responsible for the screw up that is EIRCODEs???

None other than Mr. “IRISH WATER” himself, Mr. Incinerator himself, Mr.John Tierney…nuff said.

    Regards,

Sorry Tony you are a little bit wrong there, Loc8 codes were offered to the state for free but Pat the Wabit never even returned the inventors call. So instead of FREE they had a €25,000,000 tender won by a British PLC who gave €10,000,000 to An Post the runner up.

What a great little country we are, illegal to give €10,000,000 in state aid to An Post, so we give €25,000,000 to a British company and they give An Post €10,000,000…not bad for the loser.

Now you see if the state had accepted Loc8 codes for free how would Ireland inc. have blown €25,000,000 and funded An Post illegally ????

If they can’t bother to stick to that, then nothing they ever say in future, at any future election, should be taken seriously.
Any time a Labour TD or councilor joins a debate in the next election the other people on the panel should remind the audience what a Labour promise is worth by reminding them of college fees and water charges.

This is coming from The former minister who helped establish Irish.. and now hes saying “I think we should reset Irish Water now,”… They just don’t get it, do they? It’s getting rid of Irish Water as a whole, not just the Board and CEO, that’s what the people want. Even if Mr Tierney goes, no doubt he will get a nice pay off on-top of yet another pension.

Tony, because the Oireachtas and the Government of the day sets it’s own rules for pay, pensions and perks without consulting anyone else. They vote their increases in a single day. Remember Bertie and his benchmarking? That was the single stroke that drove their pay and that of certain civil servants into the stratosphere.

Water is essetial for life and should be provided by a government to its people, not packaged and turned into a commodity to be produced by a private company at a profit while forcing people to purchase same which they already pay for through heavy taxes. To persist in telling the people we have to rethink not only is insulting and dismissive, but also another clear indication how detached certain polotical circles are from the people. Steven,’border line victorian infrastructure is a myth as all you have to do is check out when most of the mains water infrastructure in Ireland was built. You will notice something very interesting the vast majority of the water infrastructure in the Republic of Ireland was built in the 20th century. In fact mostly after 1920 With the part exceptions of what we now call city centre’s. The problem we have now is that very little maintenance was preformed in the last 30 years by successive government who’s members were to busy lining their own pockets and their cronies pockets. Many of these TD’s are still in the dail on both side.
This has resulted in the situation where 45% of treated water is lost in leaks before it ever gets to people’s homes.

We pay in taxes already for our water. Do you think we should pay a second time.

They could’ve virtually wiped out all the problem areas with the amount of millions they’ve squandered in the setting up of this debacle.

Don’t buy into the conservation argument as I’ve said before we in Ireland have access to 5 times more fresh water than your average European, properly managed we could sell it to the Arabs.

This was always about generating more revenue in the form of a stealth tax, ignore the tree huggers water is not and never was a precious resource in this country.

Notwithstanding the implementation shambles, this is a charge that makes sense and is in principle fair.

Fair? Really? There is absolutely nothing about this fair, greedy cowards doing exactly what they’re told by faceless European bullies that’s what’s happening here and the irish people will not tolerate it, Fine Gael, the water company and the Labour Party are finished, all of the above are an embarrassment to themselves and the country

    Use more water, pay more,
    Use less water, pay less.
    Seems fair to me.

Use vast quantities of water wastefully, pay same amount of tax
Use water sparingly, pay same amount of tax.
    Seems unfair to me.

Gagsy in reality that would be great but firstly it’s already paid for through general taxation and secondly we have already been told that if this water company fiasco is allowed continue we will be charged more if we don’t use enough,
Now if water treatment and distribution had been left in the hands of the councils, the money stolen by Fine Gael from the local property tax to set up irish water ( it’s gonna cost even more to wind up, but for once that will be money well spent) could have been spent improving the infrastructure.

I’ve decided to stop responding to any posts including the “we already pay for it” nonsense argument.
I can’t take it anymore and I can’t help assuming that anyone who continues to make that argument is incapable of grasping any logical rebuttal anyway.
But thanks for the gibberish anyway!

Off you go gagsy, I’ll put back all the toys you’ve thrown from your pram,
I sincerely hope you get paid for the tripe you post here and it’s not your actual belief.
Btw am I wrong? Is water not paid for from taxation?

Gagsy, we will see which argument wins out after the next General election, I wouldn’t be putting money on Labour or Fine Gael winning, Endas democratic revolution is about to be delivered, just not in the way he envisaged!

Gagsy. The implementation shambles is real and will result in massive inefficiencies and cost. Just like UHI would.

Your beliefs on water fair enough. The reality will be different.

his has to be the result of state medias self-Censorship along with one-sided, inaccurate, half-assed misleading reporting on the ‪#‎waterCharges‬. People in officialdom are actually not getting the message at all, whatsoever. The Irish people don’t give a stuff who’s in charge at IrishWater Plc, they want the entire bogus operation stopped and the faux ‘Utility company’ disbanded in favor of a TRANSPARENT, accountable, govt controlled one. What they DONT want is double charges for water. And the Privatisation of our water supply or utility company.

Yeah its Irish Water we want gone.

Today while paying rent, my landlord asked if I’d registered. I told them no and that I’m not going to. I was warned to rethink my decision and to register ASAP. My landlord made it clear they would not be paying for my water and that my lease would not be renewed unless I register… I am living here over 2 years, that can’t be legal can it?
